Malware detected by AVG

Unread postby estheblessed » December 23rd, 2010, 6:08 am

Hi,

I booted up my machine this morning and AVG detected some malware. I moved 2 files to the vault and rebooted, the same files were detected again, so I removed them to the vault. The 2 files are the following:

TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen2

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ME\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\CONTENT.IE5\FT1RBY7Y\INFO[1].EXE

Here is my HijackThis log:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

NOTE to Vista and windows 7 users:
For any tool I ask you to run you will need to "right click on it and choose
"Run as Administrator"

______________________________
Open HJT

this time click on
Misc tools section

then:
Open uninstall Manager
click on save list.
Post that for me.

______________________________
HiJackThis
Run hijackthis
(Windows 7 or Vista users please right click and choose "run as administrator.)
and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kwijapawogep] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\exaseriyovuzi.dll",Startup

Close that.

______________________________________________
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidently close it you may find it here.
Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

RSIT
  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.
If theres is more than one file to scan, insert them 1 at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\exaseriyovuzi.dll

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

You may recieve a message stating "
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes.
Just let me know if that is what you saw.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/

Re: Malware detected by AVG

Unread postby estheblessed » December 24th, 2010, 12:34 pm

Hi - I followed all of the steps although when it came to the Jotti website submission ... the file no longer exists. I think I may have removed it with AVG when it popped up.

Please advise on how to continue and thanks a million for your help thus far.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Quoted from this link in our rules area. MRU policy for P2P Programs.
Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
* If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.

Vuze

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Re: Malware detected by AVG

Unread postby estheblessed » December 24th, 2010, 8:09 pm

Seems to be running fine now, so is this a result of some malware gained through Vuze do you think? Are there any further steps I should take?

Thanks for your help!

Great!

It's very possible but I can't say for sure. Many of the infected machines we see have this type of software on them.

estheblessed wrote:Are there any further steps I should take?
Yes. Follow my steps below in my all clean speech which you now seem to be.

Nice work. Your system seems to be clean again.

___________________________________
Create a clean System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
  • Click start/all programs /accessories/system tools/system restore
  • Place a check mark by turn off system restore
  • Windows will give you a warning click yes
  • Click APPLY
  • REBOOT the computer
  • Once rebooted go right back to the same place and place a check mark by system restore
  • Click APPLY and OK

________________________________________
Windows Updates
Be certain automatic updates are turned on
XP.
Vista
Windows 7

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical/important updates.
I know rebooting sometimes can be at an inconvenient time. Postpone it till later. This will still take less time than we needed to fix your machine. ;-)

Firewalls
A few words on Microsoft firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other malware.
If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended).
3. Click OK.
I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:
Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Online Armor Firewall
Sunbelt Personal Firewall Free

________________________________
MVPS Hosts file
A host file is a list of known sites known for less than desireable behavior.
Installing this will add a list of those sites and stop your machine from visiting them thereby protecting you.

___________________________________
SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Browser settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

_______________________________________
Always watch closely to any software your installing.
If they want to install something more than their program stop right there and investigate what it is they want to place on your computer.
If they give you the option not to install it choose that until you investigate it completely.
The more you install that you don't want or need the more you'll wish you didn't.

So how did you get infected in the first place ?

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
