Having troubles with redirects

Unread postby grahams333 » October 17th, 2010, 10:34 pm

Hello,

Thank you for your help! I'm glad to have found such a great site/forum. For the past few weeks I've been having trouble with redirects and general slowness. My computer friend ran some anti-virus software but it hasn't resolved the problem. I'm concerned that my online sessions and passwords are potentially being compromised.
Thanks again! I'm not too tech savvy, but hoping I've followed the directions right! =)
Oh, the report says I use IE, but I pretty much always use Firefox.
~Dani

Hi grahams333,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Restore Item(s) From HiJackThis Backup
Start HiJackThis. Choose View the List of Backups
When the list comes up, put a check on ALL of the line(s):
Click on the Restore button, and answer "Yes".
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 8.1.3
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
<== this one will get your computer infected
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (double-click in XP)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.

grahams333,
We won't be able to get anything fixed properly until you can remove Spybot Search & Destroy and its Teatimer settings.
(If you wish, you can always download it later, when your machine is clean).

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.

If more than one version of Spybot is listed, please remove each of them, one at a time.
You may need to reboot after each one, in that case, to be successful.
At any time, if the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.

  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
If, for some reason, you can't locate the text file to paste into your reply, just tell me, but DO NOT run the program a second time.

Re: Having troubles with redirects

Unread postby grahams333 » October 22nd, 2010, 11:55 am

Hello Askey127

I'm happy to remove it if it will help, however I do not see the Spybot Search anywhere when I attempt to Remove from Control panel. Last night when I was through with the previous post, I saw one on my desktop and put it in the recycling bin then deleted it from there. Also, last night I didn't reboot after each "removal" from the control panel. Would that have made a difference?
Thanks again for your help!

grahams333,
OK.
The reboots only matter when you have a program like Spybot's Teatimer, that may try to "put back" system changes you make.
Let's do it this way:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

grahams333,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable your antivirus software after downloading but BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • DISABLE AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon in the task bar.
    • Click on Tools.
    • Select Advanced.
    • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    • In the main pane, DESELECT the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it. (You would).
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts.
When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • It will run through about 50 procedures, then take a while to assemble its output log.
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your AVG Antivirus software
A copy of the log will be located here if you need it-> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

The Recovery Console produces a brief (2 second) black screen at bootup which allows an additional technical resource for repair in case of a major failure. In regular operation, you can ignore it.

grahams333,
You have had a rootkit infection.
Some data on your PC may have been stolen.
Take precautions about any financial (credit cards, banking, etc.), or other critical data that may have passed through the machine.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.4 are vulnerable.
Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr940_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it shows any malware items, Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
.

Let me know how it's running.

Thank you Askey 127. You've been so helpful!

I was able to download and install the latest versions of Java & Adobe Reader. However when attempting to get updates for MalawareBytes the following message was given: Errorcode: 732(0,0)

Some other questions...

As far as compromised information on my computer, are documents like spreadsheets also at risk? Or just passwords typed online when logging into online banking etc? What can I do specifically to prevent that information from being stolen or mis-used?

Once we are through should I remove all of the files downloaded onto my desktop or shall I leave them? TDSKiller, TFC, CombiFix (ZZZ), Hijack This, Adobe installer.
I also have a program called PDF Creator. Is that potentially causing any of the virus exposure, or is there any way to tell where I may have picked the virus up from? (So I can prevent it in the future!)

When I right click on any of the icons on my desktop, it gives me the option of Scanning using Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG Free, or Malaware Bytes. Does having the Spybot part there mean I'm still exposed?

For the time being the re-directs seem to be resolved! YAY!!! But the rest of the computer is VERY slow.

Thank you, your help has been truly appreciated! I could have never gotten this far on my own.

Hello Askey 127.
One other thing I thought to mention, I use Hotmail for E-mail and have in the past month or so received a bunch of e-mails from friends with random links in them. I've never clicked on the links, however I've opened the e-mail before I knew it was corrupt! Lately when I'm reading my e-mails I notice that the tab at the top of my browser is almost blinking or re-loading multiple times quickly as if it's transferring some sort of info...is it possible that I'm infecting others with the virus or that my e-mail has been compromised too? Hope not!
Thanks!

grahams333,
You need to understand that when you have a rootkit infection, the perpetrator can install anything they want, and hide it from view.
If the machine is "cleaned" afterward, it is not possible to be completely sure that something wasn't left behind.
So ANY kind of theft is possible. Usually documents are not subject to theft, but only because of lack of interest on the part of the thieves, not because of lack of capability.
Usually the theives are after money, one way or another, So you should assume that any financial transactions conducted on the machine may have been intercepted.

PDF creator is not likely a danger.
What is dangerous is using File sharing programs like utorrent, not having Windows Updates turned on, having obsolete Java or Adobe reader installed ,and clicking on messages that you need something while online.

The only way to be absolutely sure you have no vestige of a rootkit or backdoor trojan is to reformat the machine and re-install Windows from scratch.

You can help by checking e-mails (your AVG should be checking), and being very careful what you click on while online.
Don't click on links in e-mails no matter who sends it.
Once your e-mail info is stolen, if it was, the only way to fix that is to change e-mail account names and passwords.
I would do that, and also get your accounts/passwords changed for any credit card or banking info that passed thru the machine.

We will do some extra checking to be sure any leftovers we can see are removed.
This scan can take a long time (hours), but it is very thorough. Please start it when you can let it finish.
It doesn't remove anything. The report, however, is very valuable.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

I've tried three times now to run the scan and the internet connection keeps failing. Please be patient and I'll upload the results of the scan as soon as I can.

Thank you

grahams333,
If you can't get the Kaspersky webscan to run, try this one:
-----------------------------------------------
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

  • Please go Here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
