Hi, please help, im not sure what to do. My computer has started to do lots of bad things recently. It stays on for a about 3 minutes and then sometimes shuts itself down with the blue error screen. Sometimes it doesnt allow you to open any files or programs, the blue circle starts spinning and then just disappears and nothing happens. When i go online, a malicious software screen comes up and tries to get me to click a Fix Me button to sort it out, which i havent done because i think its a con. Internet Explorer constantly shuts itself down which in turn makes the computer shut itself down. Its beginning to become a mess and i have tried to download malware programs to remove any but they dont find anything and then in turn begin to cause problems themselves. Thanks so much for any assistance you can give me.

The logs I request can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  5. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

The steps presented in these posts are for this person and machine ONLY. Do not apply these steps to your own system, without the guidance of a trained malware removal helper. Doing so, may possibly damage your system, preventing it from starting.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Malware removal:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care, not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

For your safety and protection, I would advise backing up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to a CD or DVD drive as some infections may render your computer unbootable during or before the disinfection process. The safest practice is not to backup any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected.

If you can not download the programs I ask you to, please download to another computer and copy to CD, DVD Flash Drive, etc. to use on this computer.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
If you already have this program installed, please proceed to the Run: portion of these instructions.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click erunt-setup-exe, select "Run As Administrator" to run the install process. Install by following prompts.
  3. Use the default install settings...
  4. Make sure the first two check boxes -> (Create ERUNT and NTREGOPT desktop icons) are checked.
Say "NO" if prompted or asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this later.
  5. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click the desktop icon, select "Run As Administrator" or start it at the end of the setup process.
  6. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is fine.
  7. Click on OK ... then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
Vista/W7 users: right-click on ERUNT in the menu, then select "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompts, please allow it.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
P2P Advisory!
IMPORTANT There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs installed on your computer.
Connect
LimeWire 4.18.8

As long as you have the P2P program(s) installed, per Forum Policy, I can offer you no further assitance.
If you choose NOT to remove the program(s)...indicate that in your next reply and this topic will be closed.
Otherwise, please perform the following steps:
Remove P2P Program(s)
  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Programs and Features.
  2. Locate the following program:
    Connect
    LimeWire 4.18.8
  3. Click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each program listed.
  4. When the program(s) have been uninstalled... Close Control Panel.
By using any form of P2P networking to download files you can anticipate infestations of malware to occur. The P2P program
itself, may be safe but the files may not... use P2P at your own risk! Keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.
References... siting risk factors, using P2P programs: Malware: Help prevent the Infection and How to Prevent the Online Invasion of Spyware and Adware

If you have removed the P2P programs, please continue with the following steps.

Step 3.
Rkill
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software, trying to "protect" itself from being terminated or removed. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen, then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself, so that Rkill can perform its routine.
Please download Rkill... by Grinler. Save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download links: Two, Three or Four
  1. Double click on the Rkill Desktop icon.
  2. A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
    1. If this does not happen... delete the file, then download and use the next link provided.
    2. If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
Do not reboot your machine until asked to do so. If no version of Rkill would run, please let me know.
When finished, Notepad will open with a log file, automatically saved at C:\rkill.log.
  3. Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log file, in your next reply.
Please leave Rkill on the Desktop unless instructed otherwise.

Step 4.
CKScanner
Please download CKScanner ... Save it to your desktop.
Make sure that CKScanner.exe is on the your desktop before running the application!
  1. Double-click on the CKScanner.exe icon... then click the Search For Files button.
Vista-W7 users, you must right click the (CKScanner.exe) icon and choose "Run As Administrator", then click the "Search For Files" button.
  2. When the scan is finished (the cursor hourglass disappears) click the Save List To File button.
A text file will be created on your desktop named "ckfiles.txt"
  3. Click OK at the file saved message box. Double-click on the ckfiles.txt icon on your desktop.
  4. Please copy/paste the contents of ckfiles.txt in your next reply.

Step 5.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
You need to be connected to the Internet, so RSIT can download HijackThis, if needed.
  1. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
These log files can be found in the C:\RSIT folder
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 6.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RKill - rkill.log file contents.
  3. CKScanner - ckfiles.txt fle contents.
  4. RSIT - log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  5. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Unread postby Wingman » October 28th, 2010, 6:31 pm

Hello garygazz

I know it's frustrating, I'm trying to get some things cleaned up and enough information so that I can determine the best method of removing any malware from your machine, please hang in there. :)
While I am looking over your logs, please perform the following steps.

The steps presented in these posts are for this person and machine ONLY. Do not apply these steps to your own system, without the guidance of a trained malware removal helper. Doing so, may possibly damage your system, preventing it from starting.

Please do not make any changes to your system: do not add or remove any software, run any scans or "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. If you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Please run this again, as changes may have occurred between the last run and now. Better to be safe than to be sorry.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT... double-click ERUNT from the menu.
VISTA - W7 users: right-click on ERUNT from the menu, select "Run As Administrator", to run the process.

It appears that you have some cracked software and are actively using it. I must insist that this software be removed.
May I draw your attention to the topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST, which you should have read before posting for help.
The section here explains why we do not offer help for such computers. Thank you for your understanding.
If you choose not to uninstall this software and remove the files, let me know and I will close this thread.

Step 2.
Uninstall Programs
I need you to uninstall some program(s).
  1. Click on Start...then... Click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Copy and paste the value below, into the open text entry box:
    control appwiz.cpl
Depending on your current view setting ...
    • Double click on Programs and Features.
    • Under Programs, click on Uninstall a program.
  3. Locate the following program(s):
    Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
    Adobe Flash CS4 Professional
  4. Select the program and click on Uninstall to uninstall it.
  5. Repeat steps 3 - 4 for each program in the list. When finished... Close the Control Panel window.

Step 3.
Delete Multiple Files and Folders
We need to delete some files and folders.
It will be easier and less error prone, if we create a batch file to do this... please follow these steps:
  1. Copy all text in the quote box (below)...to Notepad.
    @echo off
REM: Delete specific files within a Directory
    "c:\users\hamilton\downloads\adobe flash cs4 professional keygen.exe"
    "c:\users\hamilton\downloads\adobe dreamweaver cs4\adobe cs4 activation patch\adobe cs4 keygen.exe"
    del %0
  2. Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as delfile.bat... save type as "All Files"
    Image
delfile.bat <<------------- you should see this on your desktop.
  3. Right click on the delfile.bat file, select "Run As Administrator" to execute it.
A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.
  4. The files and folders, if found...will have been deleted and the "delfile.bat" file will also be deleted.

Step 4.
MGA Diagnostics
I need you to run a tool... that will aid in determining what additional steps we'll need to perform.
  1. Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  2. Right click on MGADiag.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  3. Click "Run" again...then Click "Continue".
  4. The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  5. Once done, click on Copy.
  6. Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file and post it in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MGA Diagnostic scan results.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi,

I tried to delete the Adobe programs but when they got to finish, it said that there were problems and then see below, but there was nothing there and they remained in the Control Panel.

I then used the program that you told me to, the delfile.bat one and i ran it but the programs popped up so i clicked on the cross and they disappeared. Im not sure if that is supposed to happen?

Here is the MGA results:

Hello garygazz,

There was an error in my script for removing the crack files  ... so it will need to be rerun, then we need to run some scans.

Run:

VISTA - W7 users: right-click on ERUNT from the menu, select "Run As Administrator", to run the process.

Step 2.
Delete Multiple Files and Folders
We need to delete some files and folders.
It will be easier and less error prone, if we create a batch file to do this... please follow these steps:
  1. Copy all text in the quote box (below)...to Notepad.
    @echo off

    del /f /s /q "c:\users\hamilton\downloads\adobe dreamweaver cs4\adobe cs4 activation patch\adobe cs4 keygen.exe"
    del %0

Step 3.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
VISTA users: Right-click on mbam-setup.exe, select "Run As Administrator" to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <<---Important!
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  4. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  3. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 4.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Vista - W7 users: You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted... then double click on it to install.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED

      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan results

Hello garygazz,

I'm sorry but I have some bad news. :(

Very Malicious Infection
Your computer has multiple infections, including an infection known as: W32/Ramnit.A.
There are 3 main components:
Backdoor Trojan: software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge.
Rootkit: software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. They use advanced techniques as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker.
File Infector: The viral piece of the infection that infects windows system files such as executables and dll files. Very similar to other infections of this type such as Virut and Sality.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  1. Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  2. Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. It will be a hassle but you should probably change all your account numbers.
  3. From a clean computer, change all your passwords: (Internet login, your email address(es), financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon... any online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer, an attacker can still get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  4. Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Due to its Backdoor - rootkit - file infector functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action would be to reformat and re-install the operating system (OS). This decision will have to be made by you...

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
How and Where to backup your files
Restoring your backups

This infection could very well be the result of using a P2P download or by some of the cracked software found... this is why it is not recommended to use the P2P and we never condone the use of illegal software.

It goes against my principal and training to "abandon" anyone looking for help but in light of this kind of infection, you would be best served by taking the advice given above. Even though the computer may seem to be acting fine, there is no way of knowing how many files have been infected and if the computer could still be compromised.

You should backup any personal files, pictures, music, etc using a CD or DVD, do not use a flash drive as this could become infected as well.

You will undoubtedly see some other helpers in forums cleaning these file infector infections but while some computers seem to be cleaned, they are still very problematic afterwards. With the potential of stolen data and other personal information, it is just not worth the risk to continue using the computer in this condition.

I'm sorry I couldn't bring better news.

Please respond that you have seen this post, after which I will close it.
