Firefox crashing, AVG not working, computer dying, help!

Unread postby kmb5212 » October 21st, 2010, 1:21 am

Help! My computer has been running slower lately, and my mozilla firefox freezes, turns white, and prevents mouse movement frequently. It crashes multiple times a day. Also, when I tried to update to a new version of AVG, it will download, tell me to restart, then before completely restarting it tells me I shut down the computer wrong, prompting a page telling me to diagnose the problem (or something to that effect). There's definitely something wrong. Here is my logfile from HijackThis:

Hi kmb5212,
I don't know whether the machine can be fixed using online methods.
Depends on what is causing the problem.
Let's do a few things to start.
Do you connect your Laptop to a Docking Station, or just use it alone?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\5.6.5612.1312\swg.dll
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab
O23 - Service: GameConsoleService - WildTangent, Inc. - C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Dell Games\Dell Game Console\GameConsoleService.exe
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
O23 - Service: McAfee Security Scan Component Host Service (McComponentHostService) - McAfee, Inc. - C:\Program Files\McAfee Security Scan\2.0.181\McCHSvc.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------
Check hard Drive for Errors
Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following line into Notepad:
(Notepad is in Start, Programs, Accessories)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

Now Save the NotePad file like this:
  • Click on File from the top menu bar.
  • Select Save As, use Filename: testhd.bat. and Save As Type: All Files.
  • Choose Desktop as the location
  • Click Save.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Please post the contents of the checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
If the file is very long, just copy and paste the LAST 20 or 30 lines into your reply.

So we are looking for the answer to the docking, the Instyalled programs list, and the contents from the Hard Drive test.
Use separate replies for each item if it's more convenient.
Please don't try to fix anything yourself while we are working.

kmb5212,
That hard drive result is OK. The "bitmap" note in the report is a known false error.

Please try to do the following tasks, in the order shown:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
Click on the Tools menu, click General Settings, Scroll down to Real-Time Protection Options section and Deactivate the Real-Time Protection system.

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: Dell Dock First Run.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Startup: Dell Dock.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MFARestart] "C:\ProgramData\MFAData\pack\avgrunasx.exe" /usereg

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------
Download Antivir Free
This program is free for personal, non-business use.
Download AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Save the Installer to your desktop, but don't run it yet.
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Ad-Aware
avast! Free Antivirus
AVG 2011
Dell Dock
Google Update Helper
Google Updater
McAfee Security Scan Plus
PopCap Browser Plugin
WildTangent Games

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
Don't do any surfing until you have installed Antivir below.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------
Install, Update, and Scan with Antivir
Right button Click the Avira Antivir Installer on your desktop and choose "Run as administrator".
Install the program, Have it update itself, and run a full scan.
Have it fix anything it finds.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

kmb5212,
-----------------------------------------------
Run Defence Inspector
Download the tool from this link: http://downloads.securitycadets.com/Def ... pector.exe
Once downloaded, double-click DefenceInspector to run it ( on Vista or Windows 7, please click Continue/Allow at the UAC prompt).
When presented with the option to begin the scan, please press any key to continue.
When DefenceInspector has finished scanning (this should not take longer than a minute or so), a log will appear.
Please post the entire contents of this log in your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.

Use separate replies if you prefer.
Are you still getting the same crashes and misbehavior?

Here are both of the items. The problems seemed to have stopped. Thanks!

kmb5212,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entry if it's present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MFARestart] "C:\ProgramData\MFAData\pack\avgrunasx.exe" /usereg

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download IE8 and install it (you can use Firefox for the download):

---------------------------------------------------------
You can decide to purchase the paid version of Antivir if you wish.
It removes the once a day nag screen, and provides better e-mail coverage.

If you EVER decide to change Antivirus providers, be SURE to remove the older Antivirus, so you are left with only ONE.
Having multiple antivirus applications installed can produce all kinds of problems, and often result in unstable systems.
Your original symptoms may have been caused by just that issue.
