Browser issues

Unread postby chicago » October 16th, 2010, 9:17 am

Had some issues for the last month or so after my computer got infected with a trojan. ran malwarebytes in an effort to deal with it but I don't think it worked, and performance has got steadily worse since and now every browser I have is massively buggy where it was fine before.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
My name is Airscape and I'll be helping you with your malware issues.
The logs can take a while to research. Please be patient with me.

Take note of the following before we begin.
  • Post to this thread only and please stick to it until I say your pc is clean.
  • The instructions I give are for This computer only and should not be used on any other pc.
  • Do NOT run any tools/scans unless I instruct you to.
  • Try not to install/uninstall any programs while we work. This will add extra time researching your logs.
  • If you have found assistance elsewhere and no longer require our help, please say so, and this topic will be closed.
  • If you have any problems, please stop and ask before proceeding with any fixes.
  • ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST

Note: As I'm still in training here at MRU everything I post must be checked by a teacher first. So there may be a slight delay in between posts.

Important:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any important files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Note: As you are using Vista you must Right-Click on all tools/programs I ask for and select Run as Administrator (and/or applying a password, if asked)

Hello,
Is this pc used in a University related network?

Punkbuster Warning
I see you have Punkbuster installed. This is spyware.
Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals.
By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware.
Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break.
This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do?

Hi. Sorry for the late reply, I've not had much time to get to the computer with work so haven't been able to reply till now.

I'd like to uninstall punkbuster if possible please.
The computer's still not running too well. Internet browsers keep crashing and eventually begin working again without any obvious reason.
Thanks again for your help with this. It's much appreciated.

Hello,
Ok no problem, but please remember to let me know if unable to reply (even just a few words), or the topic will close after 72 hours.

Is this pc used in a University related network?

You forgot to answer this question. Please let me know in your next reply.

Thanks.

Ok, I should be able to check up on this more often from now on I hope.
I use a university vpn on this pc, but it isn't the default connection. I have to manually connect to it when I want to, and my browsers are set to automatically detect proxy settings.

Hello,

Unfortunately, we will not help remove malware from a computer, used in/on an educational network.
Many of these type systems may have specific modifications made..which could be removed or damaged by the tools we use. These altered systems may also hinder our tools, possibly reducing their effectiveness in removing the malware.
An extract taken from the Malware Removal's rules posted at the top of the Malware Removal forum:
Malware Removal Administration wrote:Computers used in an educational environment often have policies and other modifications made to them. It is impossible for us to differentiate these from ones that have been made by an infection, so in removing what we think is an infection, we may compromise the set up of your computer.

If you have problems with your computer, contact the IT department of the establishment concerned, who are equipped to deal with the peculiarities and requirements of their network.

Any topic where we believe the computer is one that is connected to an educational network, whether frequently, infrequently, or only occasionally, will be closed.

I'm sorry, that I am not able to offer you more assistance. Thank you, for your understanding in this matter.

I will now ask for this topic to be closed.

I see you are posting for help for a computer connected to an "Educational" Network.

May I draw your attention to THIS topic, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section ....

.... explains why we do not offer help for such computers.

This topic is now closed
