  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security program(s) may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a MRU Teacher. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.

Hi

Please follow the instructions below.

Uninstall misc programs

  • Click on Start > Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Wait for the list of programs in the Add/Remove control panel to appear, then uninstall the two programs listed below:

    Coupon Printer for Windows
    Internet Explorer Default Page

TFC (Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click Yes to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. You may not be prompted to reboot.

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save it to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three, Four or Five

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • A notepad window will open, please post the contents in your next reply
  • This log can also be found at C:\rkill.log
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore/allow the download/execution to continue.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

When finished, please post the following logs using one reply per post:
  • The rkill log
  • the MBAM log.
  • the RSIT logs.
  • Describe any problems while following the instructions (if any).

Continue to reply to this thread until I tell you that the logs are clean! Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer!

I was unable to locate Internet Explorer Default Page in my programs and I am unable to run Malwarebytes..it took me several attempts just to get to the download page, I downloaded it 3 times and none of them launched it or a scan. I can NOT open the Icon on my desktop. I had the similiar trouble with Spybot, only it would say I wasn't online when I tried to run it. Below are the logs from Rkill and RSIT from both log boxes. Thank you for your help. Hopefully we can rid of this thing!

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Hi

Uninstall IE Default Page

  • Click Start - Run
  • Copy and paste the following line into the runbox, then click OK to uninstall IE Default Page
    MsiExec.exe /I{35BDEFF1-A610-4956-A00D-15453C116395}

Rename folder and uninstall programs

  • Right click the Start button and click Explore.
  • Navigate to C:\Program files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware and double click the unregaaw.exe file to remove the signs of Ad-Aware from your computer.

  • Navigate to C:\Program files
  • Highlight the following line and press Ctrl+C on the keyboard to copy it to the clipboard:
    Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Back in Windows Explorer, right click the bambam-folder and choose rename, then press Ctrl-V on the keyboard to rename the folder to Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Open the folder and double-click unins000.exe to uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy as it may interfere with the fix.
  • Reboot the computer.

Rename and run Malwarebytes

  • Navigate to c:\Program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Re-run rkill (should still be on the desktop) and wait for it to finish.
  • Back in Windows Explorer, right-click on mbam.exe and click Rename.
  • Type into the name box: vict0r.exe to rename the file and double-click to start the program, please note and post back any error messages.
  • Click the Update tab and then click the Check for Updates button to perform the update.
  • When the update is finished, click the Scanner tab, select Perform Quick Scan and then click the Scan button. Please perform the scan even if the update fails.

Disable Avast

  • Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

GMER

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow .sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All << (don't miss this one)
See image below, Click the image to enlarge it
    Image

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

If GMER crashes, then restart your computer and try again, this time also uncheck Devices. You can also try the scan in safe mode if necessary. You might want to save these instructions with notepad or print them because there's no internet in safe mode:

  • Restart your computer
  • During startup, but before the Windows logo appears, tap the F5/F8 key continually or hold down the Shift key;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • When asked to proceed to safe mode, click Yes.
  • Make sure Avast is disabled, then follow the GMER instructions.
  • When finished reboot the computer.

When finished, make sure Avast is enabled and post the following:
  • Did you find the unregaaw.exe file in the Ad-Aware folder?
  • the MBAM log
  • the GMER log.
  • Describe any problems while following the instructions (if any).

Note that if you do not reply within 3 days of any of my posts will result in your topic being closed. Please notify me in advance if you will be unable to post for more than 24 hours.

Hi

I'm sorry for the delay.

Please follow the instructions below:

McAfee Removal Tool

  • Download the removal tool: MCPR.exe ... © Copyright 2003-2008 McAfee, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.

AVG Removal Tool

  • Click here to download the AVG removal tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click avgremover.exe to run the tool.
  • Allow the computer to reboot to finish removal.

Rescan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Re-run rkill and wait for it to finish.
  • Right click the Start button and click Explore.
  • Navigate to c:\Program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double-click vict0r.exe to start the program and try to update.
  • Click the Update tab and then click the Check for Updates button to perform the update.

  • Close MBAM if the update fails, then download the latest Malwarebytes offline database. You must rename it before the download.
Right-click the following link and choose Save as..., save the file on the desktop as mmm.exe:
    mbam-rules.exe
Double-click the file to install the rules.

  • When the update is finished, start MBAM, click the Scanner tab, select Perform full Scan and then click the Scan button.
  • If the online update failed before the scan, please try to update again from the Update tab. Perform another full scan if the update is successful and post this log too.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  3. Please post the contents of "log.txt" in your next reply.

When finished, please post:
  • Do you use this computer for anything work related?
  • How is the computer connected to internet, dialup?
  • the MBAM log(s)
  • the RSIT log
  • Describe any problems while following the instructions (if any).

The only work that I do is that I log in remotely to work on this computer but do not do any work on it otherwise. My computer is connected to the internet using cable. I feel like we are getting closer but I still get redirected to ad pages when I use this computer. Thanks for all of your help.

Hi

Please refer to this topic where it is carefully described what computers we will help with and what we believe is the best procedure for you:
viewtopic.php?p=491380#p491380

We will help with ....
  • Stand alone computers used solely for Home use
  • Computers in Home Networks used solely for Home use
It is the opinion of the Administrators and Staff of this forum that the only safe procedure for dealing with a major infection (one that is not removed by your on-board Anti-Virus) on a computer used for business is to reformat your hard drive and re-install your operating system.

An administrator will review this topic and likely make the decision to close it.

I'm sorry that I can't help you further.

I see you are posting for help for a computer that connects to a business network.

May I draw your attention to THIS topic, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section Posting for help for business machines explains why we do not offer help for such computers.
