My old Thinkpad R52 is on the fritz again and this time I can't fix it myself. I would greatly appreciate any help you all can provide. Some malware which pretends to be antivirus software monopolizes my processor capacity and prevents any other .exe files from running. I had to boot into safe mode with networking in order to run HijackThis as the malware prevented it from running in a normal windows boot. The malware continuously opens its own "system scan" windows reporting myriad "security threats" and offering to fix them if I "activate your antivirus software now" versus "continue unprotected". I'm running symantec on the machine and despite a full scan of the entire computer, it detects no threats (symantec came with the computer.. and it is thoroughly useless). I have pasted the HijackThis log below with the uninstall log beneath that. Thanks again for your help.

ps. HijackThis says that it cannot access the hosts file to remove entries. I am assuming this is because I'm running it in safe mode. I know that I'll have to remove the entries in the hosts file manually and I know how to do that.

Re: Please Help Me get this crap of my computer!

Unread postby Cypher » October 7th, 2010, 2:53 pm

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

HijackThis says that it cannot access the hosts file to remove entries. I am assuming this is because I'm running it in safe mode. I know that I'll have to remove the entries in the hosts file manually and I know how to do that.

Do not make any changes to you're system unless i tell you to do so.
If you run fixes unsupervised you could render you're PC unbootable.

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    µTorrent

  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next.

Please boot into Safe Mode with Networking if you are still unable to boot to normal mode.

Next.

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • When finished, Notepad will open with a log called, "rkill.log".
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log in your next reply.
  • The file is automatically saved... located at C:\rkill.log.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Next.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform Quick Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
