Unread postby love_aoi » February 22nd, 2006, 3:12 pm

I suspect I have an infection? under the c:windows/temp folder the files win*.tmp are created every two minutes. a win*.tmp.exe file is created now and then which so far has tried to establish connection out from my computer (but stopped by the firewall) and also to install CoolWebSearch (blocked by microsoft anti spyware). can someone please help to see what am I infected with?

hi :) thanks for the advice..I have managed to remove "winccf32.dll" under the advice of someone and it appeared to have resolved the problem of the repetitive creation of win*.tmp files. I redid the steps are required before running hijackThis as required (adaware, spybot, trojanhunter, bitdefender) and below is my hijackThis log. Will you treat this as a fresh log and may I know how clean am I now? My port 80 still remains open (I cant isolate the program that is opening it using fport) as reported by symantec online security scan and my IE seems to be still running rather slowly... :) will sincerely appreciate your advice. thank you

Hello love_aoi,

I did not see anything obvious from your hijackthis log. Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Ewido Trojan Scanner
Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  6. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  7. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Blacklight

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number

Please post the report from ewido and the contents of Blacklight beta log.

hi, the scan results are as follows. nothing seems to be detected. but now at there seems to be 4 unknown items added to my start up. I tried to see what they are via msconfig but the characters are not recognizable. Everytime I boot up my computer messages like the following will appear:
"Windows cannot find ???. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click search" and "could not load ??? specified in the registry. Make sure the files exist on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry. I redid a hijckThis scan and the log is attached below. What can I do now?

Hello Love_aoi,

Let's see if this helps. Glad ewido and Blacklight beta are clean.

Scan with HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=???
?, ? ??????????????????????
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=???
?, ? ??????????????????????

After you check these items, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log.

hi :) thanks alot for the help. i think the problem is gone now. I am also able to delete come housecallthreat (or similar) files and now I am able to run trendmicro's housecall65 online which I previously couldnt. I guess if there are other problems hiding (like the case for housecall) it'll be extremely difficult to detect/find? cos after all the scans I have tried with various tools, none of them could tell me what had caused me not to be able to run housecall.....I think any remaining "payload" I can only wait until i experience the problem then I'll find out? :) does my hijackthis log look alright now? thanks alot for your help.

Your hijackthis log appears to be clean and with ewido and blacklight beta clean too, I think you are in good shape! Good work! :)

Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Cleanmgr
To clean temporary files:
  1. Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
  2. Scan your system for files to remove.
  3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  4. Click OK to remove those files.
  5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

STEP 2.( Windows XP only)
======
Prefetch Folder
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete All files in this folder but not the Prefetch folder

STEP 3.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    Turn off System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Check Turn off System Restore.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 4.
======
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  2. Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
    Test Firewall

  3. Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  4. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  5. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  8. More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
    and here: http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Prev ... -infection

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

um...can I just add a little? is it a problem that the hackerwatch test for my firewall tells me that my port 80 is open?

80 (HTTP)

If this computer is not supposed to be acting as a web server you should not have this port open.

The only programs that are recorded in my zonealarm firewall that requested for server rights are "bitcomet" and a "generic host process for win32 services"...although I denied the latter from establishing communication out from my computer before..

I would guess it might be bitcomet. Can you block it and run the probe again and see it that is the problem?

hmm...doesnt seem to be that way....I tried blocking both the generic host process and bitcomet but port80 still remains open as reported by hackerwatch....

but is it an important security issue in your opinion? I am not aware of any other servers running though...

I am so sorry! I did not receive notification. Are you still having the problem with port 80?
