IF i have a copy, it wont have SP3.

It is more probable that I have a system recovery CD.

Just spoken to Mum, She has a bootable copy of XP - but not SP3.

Hi oscar,

It is more probable that I have a system recovery CD.

Is that a CD that allows you to boot to the Recovery Console or to reinstall Windows to the state it was when the computer was new?

Hi oscar,

Back on broadband again so my replies should be more regular now.

To restore the system to original is one option and would ensure that the system is clean, however I am talking with other experts to establish a method of replacing that infected file that Avast removed.

I will respond as soon as possible.

Hi oscar,

it will boot to the recovery console

Please use the CD to boot to the Recovery Console.

At the console prompt type

disable videX32 and press Enter

The system should display the startup type that has been changed and should be

SERVICE_BOOT_START or SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

Please make a note of what is displayed and let me know.

Now type Exit to reboot the computer and try to boot into safe mode and let me know the result.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
