Hello and welcome to MWR.

Please read the following information carefully.

IMPORTANT: Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.

To make cleaning this machine easier:

  • Continue to respond to this thread until I I tell you that the logs are clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security program(s) may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a MRU Teacher. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Re: my malware help

Unread postby vict0r » September 18th, 2010, 8:40 pm

Hi.

Note that if you do not reply within 3 days of any of my posts will result in your topic being closed. If possible please notify me in advance if you will be unable to post for more than 24 hours.

Please post a description of the problem. The description does not need to be technically detailed, but if your computer has given you any Error Codes or flashed up any messages, then the exact wording of them can be very useful. Please post the description in a separate post before you continue with the instructions below:

Security Application Check

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe by screen317 to your Desktop from one of the links below.
Link 1 | Link 2

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe to start the program
  • If new window opens asking if you want to run the program, click Run

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Hi

I have some bad news.

Your computer was infected by a keylogger, Win32/Spyeye. As the name conveys, a keylogger is a program which composes a log of keys you type, and then sends it to its owner. This particular keylogger is designed to capture keystrokes and steals login credentials through a method known as "form grabbing". Any Username and password entered on any webpage while infected is likely to be compromised.

The keylogger was accompanied by Rootkit.TDSS, also known as Win32/Alureon. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. Due to its rootkit functionality, it's impossible to tell what may have been done when the system was compromised.

The following steps should be taken:
  • If you have ever handled anything related to money (online banking, online shopping, etc), call your bank company and say that you might be a victim of identity theft due to a computer virus which logs keystrokes.
  • Next, change ALL your passwords from a different computer! Do not use them on this computer again, until we have verified that there are no remaining infections present.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). Although an attempt can be made to clean this machine, we can not be certain that it afterwards will be truly clean, secure, and trustworthy.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

Read this for further information:
What are rootkits from Wikipedia
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should I do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Should you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi.

How much? Note that any financial related handled while the computer has been infected must be considered compromised information and the appropriate actions must be taken.

To answer your question I ideally need the make and model of your computer, but judging from the logs you have posted it seems to me that you have a Sony VAIO computer. Chances are good that the computer has a recovery partition with software to make the job easy for you. The only issue is how you are going to back up the files you don't want to lose.

The job with the backup/reinstall is what you have to consider against continue cleaning the computer and that we can't be sure it's safe afterwards. The decision is up to you.

It's more than 2 days since my last post to you. Do you still need any help with this problem?

Note that this topic will be closed very soon after 3 days have passed since my previous reply to this topic.
