We have run and run AVG the past couple of days and it has found anywhere from 4 to 6 Trojan infections but has only been able to get rid of half of them. The half that it cannot get rid of of AVG has said they are inaccessible. Here is my HJT log. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me. Also I FIrefox automatically opens a new tab that I have not requested even though the setting tell it not to and when opening web pages from search sites the pates are redirected to something else. I have to copy and paste the web address in order to get the right site to open. And other users are blocked from the internet and get this warning: FF is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections. The settings are not any different than the settings that I use on my account. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Punkbuster warning

I see you have Punkbuster installed.( read the section on Published features) This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that It is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do.

Next.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Next.

Upload File/Files for testing

Please go to jotti.org or Virustotal

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Program Files\SpotterNetwork\spotternetwork.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • You're PunkBuster decission.
  • Uninstall list.
  • jotti or virustotal results.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

I want to uninstall punkbuster. I am unfamiliar with this program and am not sure who in my family installed it. I would also like to take steps to make sure it does not get installed again. Would you be able to give me a list of games or types of games that use this program? The problems I am experiencing with my computer prevented me from posting to this forum from my own computer. I do not know when I will again be able post you an answer on this forum. Is there some other way to keep in touch with you if I continue to have problems posting? I really want to get this problem resolved. If there is no other way to get a hold of you, it may be several days before I have access to another computer so that I can post again. I WILL let you know when this problem is resolved. Thank you for your help.

Hi.
FF is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

Did you set this proxy yourself?
If not try the following to see if it allows you to post to this forum.
In the FF browser go to Tools > options > advanced > then select network.
Next go to setting and select no proxy > ok.

Internet Explorer

  • Please start Internet Explorer, and when the program is open, click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options.
  • Now click on the Connections tab.
  • Now click on the Lan Settings button.
  • Under the Proxy Server section, please uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN. Then press the OK button to close this screen.
  • Then press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen.

May I ask why you are looking at a program we use for communicating with the National Weather Service which we use in our volunteer service of storm spotting?

Thank you for you help.

PS. Sorry I forgot to tell you that making the changes on the proxy setting worked. I was able to post on you site from my own computer, and we were able to get on the internet through the other user. Thank you. But why was I able to get on but the other user not able to with the same settings?

Thank you

We have two users set up on our computer, one that is set up as an administrator and one that is set up as a limited user. A few months ago the limited user was not able to get on the internet and instead got the message: "FF is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections." The internet settings were the same on both users. After I changed the setting on both to no proxy. Both users are now able to get internet access again. Why was the admin user able to use the internet and the limited user was denied access when both had the same internet settings?

When doing the HJT list fixes, this is what I found:
There was no line "R3 - URLSearchHook: Inbox Toolbar - {D3D233D5-9F6D-436C-B6C7-E63F77503B30} - C:\PROGRA~1\INBOXT~1\Inbox.dll", but there is a line that says "R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {D3D233D5-9F6D-436C-B6C7-E63F77503B30} - (no file)". Should I get rid of that one instead?

The following lines were also not available:
O2 - BHO: Inbox Toolbar - {D3D233D5-9F6D-436C-B6C7-E63F77503B30} - C:\PROGRA~1\INBOXT~1\Inbox.dll
O3 - Toolbar: &Inbox Toolbar - {D7E97865-918F-41E4-9CD0-25AB1C574CE8} - C:\PROGRA~1\INBOXT~1\Inbox.dll
O18 - Protocol: inbox - {37540F19-DD4C-478B-B2DF-C19281BCAF27} - C:\PROGRA~1\INBOXT~1\Inbox.dll

When I ran AVG last night it did find and fix the trojan that it had been finding earlier but not being able to fix. This morning is when I ran all of the fixes that you suggested. I have not seen a pop up tab in awhile but linked are still being redirected. Also some links on Facebook seem to be broken. Not sure if this is due to the fixes I made or if it is a Facebook/Playfish problem.

Spoke too soon about not getting any more pop-up tabs. I just went to a different web site and a Registry warning opened up a new tab as well as making my browser page smaller.

  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • * This can take a while. Please be patient *.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of this log in you're next reply.
  • This log can be lengthy you may have to post it in separate replies.
  • Note: You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
