Redirected Searches- Infomash and Others

Unread postby Denske » September 10th, 2010, 11:18 am

Like others who have posted similar issues at this and other malware support sites, I have had google search hits redirected to random trap sites, one repeat offender being "Infomash." But there are others, and once a window popped up trying to start a bogus "antivirus" program. I ran Malwarebytes and it found two entries in the registry of "hijack.windowsUpdates." And of course, Malwarebytes didn't remove them, even though it reported that it did. This seems identical to many other posters' problems, but I took seriously various forum warnings that I could not follow the guidance given for someone else's computer. So here I am.

As far as I know, I have no P2P sharing programs and no cracked programs. But then you will see that from the logs.

Hello and Welcome to Malware Removal! :)
My name is Gizzy and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you have with your computer.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this computer.
  • If you don't know or understand something stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please DO NOT run any tools or scans unless I ask you to.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use, Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The process is not instant, Please continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Note: As I am still in training, All of my posts must first be checked by an Expert/Teacher, So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

I will post further instructions shortly.

Hello Denske, :)

You aren't running Anti-virus Software:
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors:

After installing an Anti-virus remember to update it to be protected from the newest malware.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Download and Run RSIT:
  1. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  4. Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  5. Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log:
Please copy and paste the log where MBAM found something in your next reply, It can be found here:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please reply with:
  • Rsit logs (log.txt & info.txt)
  • MBAM log

Hi Gizzy,

Point taken about the antivirus software. You didn't say whether I should install during this cleaning phase or wait until we are finished. I will hold off until your next reply.

Hi Denske, :)

Yes, Install an Anti-virus now, Then do the following.

Gmer Rootkit Scanner
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here & save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  2. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  3. In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  4. Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  5. Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  6. Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Run RSIT:
You should still have this program on your desktop.

  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  2. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  3. Once it has finished, only one log will open, log.txt (<<will be maximized)
  4. Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Please reply with:
  • Gmer
  • RSIT log (log.txt)
  • An update on how your computer is running now, Any old problems still remaining and/or new problems.

Gizzy,

Here are the additional files you requested. Right now the computer seems to be working well. After I ran Gmer and RSIT, I did have some sluggish moments trying to open web pages, and when I was getting ready to make this post the first time, I tried to open notepad from the start menus and everything locked up completely. I had to power down by holding down the power button. When I booted back up, things seemed ok.

I have a question not directly related to this fix that I would like to ask by pm if that is ok.

Denske

Hi Denske,

Denske wrote:I have a question not directly related to this fix that I would like to ask by pm if that is ok.
Sure, That's ok, Feel free to send the pm. :)

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Please reply with:
  • Combofix log
  • New HijackThis log

Unread postby Gizzy » September 13th, 2010, 7:47 pm

Hi Denske, :)

After doing the following, How is your computer running? Any problems? Anymore redirects?

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it.
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Please reply with:
  • Gooredfix.txt
  • New HijackThis log
  • Update on how your computer is running.

Unread postby Denske » September 13th, 2010, 10:57 pm

Gizzy,

I took a little time to reply so I could sample enough searches. The problem was never all, or even most of the time, "only" about 10% of the searches. And always if I went back to the hit page and clicked a second time on the link, I would get what I was looking for.

But now it has been quite a while since I had a redirected search. I can't remember whether I had any since you started helping me. The other symptom was just the bad results on the Mbam scan: the malicious registry entries that it would't get rid of. I haven't tried any more Malwarebytes scans.

Here is the most recently requested log.

Hi Denske, :)

Denske wrote:The other symptom was just the bad results on the Mbam scan: the malicious registry entries that it would't get rid of. I haven't tried any more Malwarebytes scans.
That should be fixed, Those entries shouldn't show up in the results.
To be sure update/run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and post the log it produces.

Update Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date,
Older versions have vulnerabilities that can be used to infect your system, It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.3.4
You can download it from: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Install it, then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions that may remain.

Update Java
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 21.

  1. Go Here
  2. Click the Free Java Download button.
  3. Click the Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline link to download it, Save this to a convenient location.
  4. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
  5. Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment JRE or JSE)
  6. Reboot your computer
  7. Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  8. Install the new version by double-clicking the downloaded file jre-6u21-windows-i586-s.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
  9. Reboot your computer

TFC (Temp File Cleaner)
  1. Please download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.
  2. Save any unsaved work, TFC will close all open application windows.
  3. Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  4. Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  5. If prompted, click Yes to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on the Accept button
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  4. Make sure the following boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  9. Please post this log in your next reply

Hi Gizzy,

How important is it that I post the Kaspersky log? :} I did run it, and it came out clean. But then I messed up the save of the log and accidentally started the whole process again. It had taken an hour to download definitions and 2 hours to scan. I can do it again if you really need it.

Otherwise, here are the Malwarebytes and the HijackThis logs.

Hi Denske, :)

Denske wrote:How important is it that I post the Kaspersky log? :} I did run it, and it came out clean. But then I messed up the save of the log and accidentally started the whole process again. It had taken an hour to download definitions and 2 hours to scan. I can do it again if you really need it.
So long as it came out clean then don't worry about it.

Congratulations your machine appears to be clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.

Remove Tools:
Let's remove the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, They are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

You can delete RSIT, The Gmer file, And GooredFix from your desktop.
Also delete their folders GooredFix Backups from your desktop, And C:\rsit

Uninstall ComboFix:
  1. Click on Start > Run
  2. Type ComboFix /Uninstall into the box and click OK
  3. Note the space between the x and /Uninstall it needs to be there.

TFC is a great tool for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Update Internet Explorer:
You are currently using Internet Explorer 6, The newest version is Internet Explorer 8.
Newer versions are much more secure, I highly recommend you update Internet Explorer.
You can download Internet Explorer 8 from Here

Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated:
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.

Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Keep your programs up to date:
Vulnerabilities are sometimes found in programs that can be used to infect your computer,
So it's a good idea to always use the most up to date version of programs,
Below are 2 sites that can be used to check if any of your installed programs are in need of updates.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Keep your system updated:
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

  1. I advise you visit: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
  2. Install the Active X
  3. Once installed it will advise you set Auto-Updates if not set and you then will be able to manually check for updates also via:
  4. Start > All Programs > Microsoft Updates

Below are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spyware Blaster
Download it from Here
Find a tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster Here

WinPatrol
Download it from Here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works Here

Update all these programs regularly
Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly, Without regular updates you will NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it, and if you have no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean! :thumbright:

HI, Gizzy,

Everything is good.... I think! Sorry it took a little longer to get back this time. You gave me a lot of things to do, and I haven't actually finished yet. The one odd thing was that when I ran /start/run and typed "ComboFix \Uninstall" ComboFix ran another scan. And it didn't uninstall itself or delete any associated files. Otherwise, everything looked ok. I didn't try a second time.
