Most Programs causing freezes

Unread postby Dieselroar » September 2nd, 2010, 3:39 am

Okay, so, I'm a pretty knowledgeable computer user. I build my own systems and generally troubleshoot them myself. having said that, this isn't my first time needing some help from hijackthis and you fine people either.

Issues!

1.) Over the past few days, my computer has suddenly begun freezing on the most random of programs. Namely Itunes, but also Skype, chrome, VLC player, etc. My computer is a year old and liquid cooled; I doubt it's a hardware issue. I have scanned my computer with malwarebytes, but it detects nothing.

2.) when I try and open the aforementioned programs, occasionally they will fail to open, and not show up in task manager, but WILL show up in processes, in which I can kill it and restart the program and it will sometimes work.

3.) Shockwave crashes literally every time I have tried to use it online in the past 3 days.

On another note; my laptop has ALSO been freezing on itunes and more specifically Skype, but I have no idea how the problem could have spread through both computers. Iphone syncing? seems very unlikely as I have only music and photos, and none of it is recently added.

Dieselroar,
As a pretty knowledgeable computer user, you should also know that using P2P programs like Limewire and Bittorrent will get your computer infected.
The probability is something like 100%.
There are no safe P2P music sites, and there are "bazillions" of tunes with planted infections.
We will require that you remove Lime wire and Bittorrent as a condition of receiving our help.
http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=491394#p491394
After your machine is cleaned up, if you should return later with more infections from P2P usage, we may refuse to help

If you wish to continue using P2P programs, I would suggest using Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image or other imaging programs so you can routinely return your drive to a clean state.
Meanwhile, of course, the planted trojans will be able to intercept every account number, username, and password used on the machine.

Down to business.....
You need to look at your Router setup first.
Go into the Router settings as if you were just setting it up for the first time.
This time, look to see if any strange addresses have been added.
Once you are satisfied that all the addresses and gateway are correct, change the password for the Router Administrator Account if it is still the default value.
The default values are published here : http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

You will need to unplug or turn off the (wireless?) router connection to the laptop while we work on this machine so they don't cross-infect.
Afterward, the laptop will have to be cleaned by downloading tools onto a flash, and not reconnecting it to the router until it is clean.
If they are connected on the same router while one is infected, the clean one can be re-infected in seconds.
Fun, eh?
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Limewire
Bittorrent

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7).
  • A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
--------------------------------------------
TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
If, for some reason, you can't locate the text file to paste into your reply, just tell me, but DO NOT run the program a second time.

So we are looking for the log file from TDSSKiller. Let me know about the router and how everything goes.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
