RESUBMISSION: Extremely slow running w/possible viruses

Unread postby minman » August 29th, 2010, 11:00 am

I am using a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, running Windows XP. It runs extremely slow, probably due to viruses, trojans, or other stuff that's maliciously entered my environment. I've only had the laptop for about a year. My HiJack This log and Uninstall List are below: Thanks! Matt

Hi minman,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: Zynga Toolbar - {7b13ec3e-999a-4b70-b9cb-2617b8323822} - C:\Program Files\Zynga\tbZyn1.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Zynga Toolbar - {7b13ec3e-999a-4b70-b9cb-2617b8323822} - C:\Program Files\Zynga\tbZyn1.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c
O4 - Startup: Logitech . Product Registration.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Logitech WebCam Software\eReg.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Java(TM) 6 Update 16
McAfee Security Scan
Uninstall 1.0.0.1
Zynga Toolbar

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please. Use two replies if you prefer.

minman,
------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to your Desktop. It will create a new folder.
  • Inside the new folder, double click ERUNT.exe.
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: If you ever need to restore your registry later, you would go to the default backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
(The default backup folder is C:\Windows\ERDNT\ and the backups are saved according to date stamp)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Copy/Paste/Run a Registry Edit
Copy/paste the contents of the following code box into a new notepad document:
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Freecorder FLV Service"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\{1392b8d2-5c05-419f-a8f6-b9f15a596612}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{1392b8d2-5c05-419f-a8f6-b9f15a596612}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save it as File Type All Files (not as a Text document, or it won't work).
Save it to your Desktop as File Name fixme.reg
Double click fixme.reg on your Desktop, and merge it into the registry when asked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Freecorder 4.0 Application
Freecorder Toolbar

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------

minman,
You have far too many programs starting automatically for the amount of available RAM.
By and large, these entries can be started manually if needed, so I would suggest removing them from startup

We will make a bckup of the registry first, in case you need to revert to the present settings again.
------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to your Desktop. It will create a new folder.
  • Inside the new folder, if you have XP, double click ERUNT.exe. If you have Vista, right click ERUNT.exe and choose "Run as administrator"
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: If you ever need to restore your registry later, you would go to the default backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
(The default backup folder is C:\Windows\ERDNT\ and the backups are saved according to date stamp)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'SYSTEM')

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine

Let me know how it's running. We can take more steps if necessary.

Let's try to speed up your machine.
Some questions:
1. Do you use Narrator to produce audio from your screen text?
2. Do you need the Webcam software to start automatically, or would it be OK to start it from Programs?
3. How do you use the Sentrilock Card Utility?

Run TFC again from your desktop and let it reboot..

--------------------------------------------
Indexing saves time when you do a Windows file search, but causes slowdowns the rest of the time.

Disallow Indexing on the C: Drive
Go to Start, My Computer
Right click on the C: Drive and choose Properties.
At the bottom, UNCHECK the box labeled "Allow Indexing to Index this disk for fast file searching".
Click Apply, and OK.
CHECK the button to apply to all folders and subfolders.
Click Apply.
Go for a coffee.
When it's done, click OK.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Disable Indexing Service (XP)
From Start, Run, type services.msc into the box and hit <Enter>
Scroll down to Indexing Service on the list and Right Click it, then choose Properties.
Under Service Status, click Stop
After it stops, Under Startup Type, choose Disabled.
Then click Apply, OK
---------------------------------------------------------------
Defragment the C: Drive
Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter
Highlight the C: Drive and click Defragment.
Wait for it to finish. May take a while.
Exit when done.
Let me know about the questions, and if it's any faster.

Hi--I do not use Narrator at all. I disabled indexing, ran TFC, and defragged. I use Skype, webcam, and sentrilock periodically and don't want them in startup. I am trying to use firefox---when I just clicked on it to open, it took about a minute before it opened.

minman,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\5.5.5126.1836\swg.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogitechQuickCamRibbon] "C:\Program Files\Logitech\Logitech WebCam Software\LWS.exe" /hide
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Global Startup: SentriLockCardUtility.lnk = C:\Program Files\SentrilockCardUtility\SentrilockCardUtility.exe
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
O23 - Service: Google Software Updater (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

After you do a thorough cleaning with TFC, including what is called the DNS Cache, it may take a few browser openings to speed up access to your usual sites.

You really want to be reminded about somebody's birthday at the expense of resources?
If not, you can check this line in HJT also, and use "Fix Checked"
O4 - Startup: Greetings Workshop Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Greetings Workshop\GWREMIND.EXE

Reboot the machine and then use the system a bit to see how it responds.
Let me know .

So far, there seems to be much improvement. I need to keep the kids off of it. They add the random toolbars and things like Greetings Workshop...Thanks so much for your help. I'll reboot a few times and start the browser a few times to check. Should I follow certain steps periodically to keep it cleaned up? Obviously, TFC helps out.

minman,
One of the best ways to keep kids from damaging the machine is to make a new User Account (In Control Panel)
Name it, Make it a limited account, and let them surf with it.
Then change the password on your account.

The limited account restricts the system altering privileges, but allows personal desktop settings, icons, documents, etc.

You can run TFC every few weeks to keep it from getting clogged up with leftovers.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. Startup is much faster now. Oddly, both Firefox and Explorer are taking about 45 seconds to a minute to respond after I double click on the icon to open.

Try removing this one and see if it helps. You don't need it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

You may find that return trips to the same site with the browsers are faster.
