Slow Running?

Unread postby jsthomas928 » August 26th, 2010, 7:40 pm

HI. Recently my husbands laptop starting running really slow and shuts down periodically in the middle of things. We have to do a reboot in order for it to run up to speed most times. Nothing I know has been downloaded to the laptop recently. There are two accounts on this computer, but I have only posted from my account and not my husbands. Not sure if that would be needed as well. Any help you can provide or recomend will be welcomed. Thanks!

HI jsthomas928,
Let's do a bit of analysis.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please. Use two replies if you prefer.

Also please tell me if you or your husband do Java software development.

Let's do a bit of analysis.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please. Use two replies if you prefer.

Also please tell me if you or your husband do Java software development.

jsthomas928,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - Global Startup: HOTSYNCSHORTCUTNAME.lnk = C:\Program Files\palmOne\Hotsync.exe
O4 - Global Startup: setup.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Shortcut to Startup

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Java DB 10.5.3.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 18

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click TFC.exe to run it.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------------
Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter
Highlight the C: drive and click on Defragment.
Wait until a message box comes up reporting process complete. May take quite a while (even a couple hours).
-----------------------------------------------------------
We have other tools at our disposal.
Tell me a few things if you would:
  • Do you often use the Windows Search routine to find files on the machine?
  • How long has Magic Jack been installed on the machine?
  • Is it running any faster now?

This is just a reply to your questions after doing the above steps. The disk defragmenter is running now.

We don't use the Windows serach routine at all to find files on the machine. The laptop is mostly used for going on the internet, reading emails and searching the web for various information.

Magic Jack has been installed for about 6 months I believe, though not used on a daily basis on this computer - it was first install on laptop before being moved to the desktop we now have.

And yes! Oh my goodness, seems to be running much faster, with no pauses. Thank you!!

ONE OTHER QUESTION: Do these steps take care of both user accounts or should these steps be repeated on each account (we have to seperate accounts on laptop, one for my husband, and one for me)?

jsthomas,
There is no need to venture into other accounts.
I wasn't sure whether Magic Jack could have been causing any slowdowns.

You can save TFC.exe and run it once every week or two.
I would defragment about once a month.

I asked about the search because The "Indexing" feature of XP can be turned off if the occasional pauses are annoying.
It tries to do housekeeping while you are in-between tasks. Sometimes in gets in the way, though.
It makes searches faster, but can make the machine slower the rest of the time.
You can shut it off it if you want, like this (you do need to be in an account with admin privileges):
Stop Indexing on the C: Drive
Go to Start, My Computer
Right click on the C: Drive and choose Properties.
At the bottom, UNCHECK the box labeled "Allow Indexing to Index this disk for fast file searching".
Click Apply, and OK.

CHECK the button to apply to all folders and subfolders.
Click Apply.
Go for a coffee.
When it's done, click OK.

Unless there are other specific issues, I have no reason to expect you have any infections.
