My world of warcraft account was hacked recently. I managed to reset the password and gain access again, but im not sure the programme that enabled the hack is cleared off my computer or not. I did a full scan with AVG and it only came up with tracking cookies, and i also tried a disk cleanup and reset my browser to a higher security.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.
If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Junebug and welcome..

I'm DFW and I am going to try and help you with your Malware problem. Please observe the following points and rules while we work:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The clean up process can take time. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Some of the Logs we ask for can take some time to Analise, so please be patient.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Be back with instructions

Hi junebug

Your machine is missing vital Service Packs. If I may bring the below you your attention:-

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... pport-mean

So at present you are running a unsupported operating system, which is leaving you open to infections and attack.
Support for Windows Vitsa with Service Pack (SP1) will end on July 13, 2010. To continue support, make sure you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Do not try and install SP2 on your infected system yet, as you have have been running with only SP1,and from what you have posted you machine is undoubtedly infected and compromised,
we have a look and see what is or has gone on, and see if it is worth trying to clean..

MGA Diagnostics
I need you to run a tool... that will aid in determining what additional steps we'll need to perform.
  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Click "Run" to execute MGADiag.exe.
  • Click "Run" again...then Click "Continue".
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file and post it in your next reply.

Check for additional security risks
  • Please download CKScanner© by askey127 and save to your desktop. Click here.
  • Right click on CKScanner.exe and select Run as Administrator and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File. You will be prompted, click OK.
  • Post the contents of ckfiles.txt in your reply, it is located on your desktop.

Download and Run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please post back

Additional security risks Log
MGA Diagnostics Log
Both rsit Logs

Hi junebug

The copy of Microsoft Office that you are using was activated by a key which has been blocked.
It's very possible that you purchased this in good faith, but unfortunately, due to the forum rules, I must insist that you remove this program if you wish to receive any help.

Please review the Malware Removal forum policy on Illegal Copies of Software

In order for me to continue to assist you, please make the following changes:
  1. Purchase a legal copy of the software
  2. Remove the "illegal" software from your computer.
NOTE: If you state that the software has been removed...and it has not been removed... (tools we use can and will detect it)
I will have, under forum policy, no choice but to discontinue any assistance and have this thread closed.

Please let me know your decision.

Hi junebug

Well done, let carry on now.

Disable CD Emulator(s)
We need to use powerful tools to check out your system.
*If* you are are using a CD Emulator (Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD) be aware that they use hidden drivers with rootkit-like techniques to hide from other applications. When dealing with a malware infections, CD Emulators can interfere with investigative tools producing misleading or inaccurate scan results, false detection of legitimate files, cause unexpected crashes, BSODs, and general 'dross' which often makes it hard to differentiate between malicious rootkits and the legitimate drivers used by Emulators. Since CD Emulators use a hidden driver which can be seen as a rootkit and can interfere with investigative tools or cause other problems, we need to remove or disable them until disinfection is completed.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Right-click TFC.exe And select " Run as administrator to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Right-click on .exe file And select " Run as administrator to run the program. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Hi junebug

I would like you to run Gmer in safe mode.

To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN). At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Note on some systems the F5 key is used to enter safe mode.

Once in safe mode

Reboot into normal mode, and post the Gmer log.

Just a note - when i went into safemode it said there was a corrupt file and when i finished the gmer scan then booted in normal mode it stopped and did a chkdsk, where the only thing i could see it did was delete a corrupt file (128, "), just in case its relevant.

Hi junebug

There were some signs in the rsit log that you may have hard drive errors, which means that it could be failing and or in need of maintenance,
It just ran a chkdsk as you said but we will perform some more maintenance soon, to see if that helps.

It would be a good ideal to back up all your data and files just in case the drive was to fail now or in the future.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Next
Run RSIT

Please note there will be only one log this time.

  • RUN random's system information tool by doulbe clicking on (RSIT)on your desktop
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, one log will open.
  • Please post the contents into next reply

Postback in this order Please

Hi,

Sorry about this, but after backing up, i tried to disable the parts of AVG9, but when I tried to open the progam, this error came up :(

'The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail'

I tried downloading it again, but it stopped saying there was an error, something to do with the server.

Sorry about this, just one thing after another.

Hi junebug, try this, and then try again.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Right click on each instance of: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 and uninstall it using the Remove button.
Restart your computer.
Download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 from the following website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 9c36f85647

Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2005
Restart your computer again.
Try again.
