got hit by recent Spy Falcon/media player scam

Unread postby adrian e » February 17th, 2006, 7:16 pm

Hi there

Thanks to the advice here and the instructions I followed on this site and here http://malwareremoval.com/plog/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=85&blogId=3

I think I've managed to clear my system out (got hit on the 14th Feb), however today I booted up and got a warning from Norton that I had a Bloodhound.W32.2 'threat alert' in c:\windows\system32\msdtcuiu.dll but that it couldn't be repaired as access denied. I ran a full system scan and it has failed to pick anything up.

Ewido picked up a few tracking cookies, but that's about it.

I'm a bit nervous that I may not have removed all the vulnerabilities, or closed all the doors that Spy Falcon may have opened - could someone take a look at the hijackthis log file below and let me know if it looks OK?

I'm not an IT professional, so know just enough to cause myself more problems than I'm likely to solve

Many thanks

Adrian

Hi adrian e and welcome to Malware Removal!

Other than the Symantec/Norton infection you got going on.... :D

Your log looks good!

Heres some info from the Symantec site on that warning you are getting...

The virus name Bloodhound.W32.2 is used exclusively by Symantec antivirus products when a potentially unknown virus is found using Symantec Bloodhound technology. Bloodhound technology consists of heuristic algorithms that are used to detect unknown viruses.

Some info on msdtcuiu.dll for you....

msdtcuiu.dll (MS DTC administrative component DLL) is a component from the software Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator version 3.1.4414 by Microsoft Corporation. msdtcuiu.dll version 3.1.4414 has a file size of 161,280 bytes, and is most commonly found under the directory "system32" with a creation date of August 4, 2004.

Check the file properties for msdtcuiu.dll on your computer and see if they match the above quote... if so Norton is probably spitting a false positive out at you and I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thanks for getting back to me

The info on the dll looks more or less the same - the file size is identical, although the creation date is April 2004 which I don't suppose makes much difference!

I'm getting particularly cheesed off with Norton at the moment - it doesn't integrate well with Outlook, and the updates seem to be a bit slow to keep up with events......

What's a better option for antivirus/firewall/e-mail filtering/system cleanup utility combos? I don't mind paying for a decent service - luckily I'm not paying for Norton at the moment, but it expires soon!

Hmmm... I don't usually go for those all-in-one programs. They tend to be bloated and resource hogs.

All the programs I use on my machine are free. I use AVG Free as my AntiVirus with Ewido as an on demand scanner. ZoneAlarm for a firewall... though its mainly there to warn me of anything trying to call home as my home network is behind a router. Email filtering is done through my ISP... anything that gets by it I create rules for in OE. I also use CCleaner for a sytem cleanup utility.

Lots of others out there to choose from too. Just need to find the ones that work for you.
