Google Links Being Redirected

Unread postby johnt99 » July 2nd, 2010, 8:06 am

A friend asked me to see if I could resolve the above issue for her. She is running Windows Vista SP2 on a Packard-Bell CH_BOS system. She already had Norton 360 and Hitman Pro 3.5 Build 105 installed but neither of them detect anything ugly. I've subsequently tried AdAware and Malwarebytes anti-malware but still nothing shows up. Links have been re-directed to sites such as cleanallspyware.com & smartbizsearch.com. I've also tried searching the system for those but, again, nothing shows up. I'm sending this from my PC rather than the infected one.

Hope someone can help.

TIA

Re: Google Links Being Redirected

Unread postby Cypher » July 5th, 2010, 11:38 am

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forums, i apologize for the delay in answering your request for help the forum is really busy.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

I'm sending this from my PC rather than the infected one.
Is there some sort of problem sending the logs from the infected PC?

  • Under Settings, click on Options.
  • Under Automatic scanning, uncheck (untick) Automatically scan my computer (recommended) box.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck (untick) Use real-time protection (recommended) box.
  • Click on the Save button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • Note: Please do not Re-enable this until i tell you to do so.

Thanks for the response. I'm currently running a Ghost backup of the System partition which may take an hour or five. I'll post you the logs as soon as I can after that.

Cheers.

Sorry, missed your question about sending things from the infected PC. It normally connects to ADSL via a Speedtouch USB modem which I don't have. I've got it connected to my router via a LAN: Despite Internet Options; Connections being set to 'Dial when a network connection is not present', it still tries to connect via the Speedtouch and - when it can't - goes to 'Working Offline'. Consequently, I'm using an uncompromised PC to communicate with you.

Best Wishes.

OK. I might be a 'senior citizen', but I don't think I've completely lost the plot yet.

Ghost has now been running for just over an hour and its 'ETA' has gone up to + 6.00 hours.

I think I'll have gone to bed before it finishes, so I expect it'll be tomorrow before I can send you the logs.

Cheers.

Re: Google Links Being Redirected

Unread postby Cypher » July 6th, 2010, 7:19 am

Hi johnt99.
Post the RKUnHooker log when ready.
Please run his scan and post the log also.

Please Download Kenco.exe by jpshortstuff and save it to your Desktop.

  • Close all other programs before executing!.
  • Double click Kenco.exe, to begin execution. Scan should only take a few minutes.
  • When finished, the log file " Kenco.log" will open in Notepad.
  • It will also be saved in the same location as Kenco.exe which should be on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Hmmm. When trying to run RKUnHooker, it comes up with an error message on the File scan stage 'Error starting helper service' and this is immediately followed by the Norton 360 Sonar scanner reporting a security violation requiring a restart.
I have tried to run the program 3 times and this happens every time. Norton quarantines an apparently randomly named .exe file which it finds in C:\Windows\System32.

Here's the RKUnHooker log:-

Well, I turned off Norton 360 and ran Kenco. Would there be any point in re-running RKUnhooker with Norton Off?

Here's the result from the Kenco scan:-

The offending item had these names:-

dec9018f.exe 10:51
cdac2176.exe 11:18 (I think this was the time of the run that produced the unhooker log
5e1b003.exe 11:41
