My computer has slowed down recently because of malware. The boot process has been greatly elongated....I tried looking at the various programs that launch during the bootprocess and also looking at the services but I dont want to do further damage since I am not sure what is what...I have used Norton Antivirus, Malware Bytes and AdAware but i don't think those caught the problems. Can you please help me?
Thank you so much...Its so great that you are helping so many people with problems! :D

flashgordon,
Any system that has XP Service pack 2 with no update patches like yours has been a prime target for hundreds of infections over a period of years.
Attempting to fix it is probably not feasible. There will be too many corrupt and infected files and settings to find and correct.

My best recommendation is that you do a complete system recovery (not a repair), to re-install the system the way it was when you bought it, then immediately protect it and do a complete update.
This is the only way you are likely to have a secure machine going forward.

A copy of Lenovo instructions for a complete system recovery is here:
http://en.kioskea.net/faq/5034-lenovo-laptop-recovery

After re-installing the system, you need to go to the Control Panel, Security Center and turn ON automatic updates.
There will be as many as 100 updates to download and install. It must be allowed to update and install them all.

Then make sure your Security Center shows an up to date antivirus.
If the AntiVirus can NOT be updated, you should uninstall the antivirus that came with the machine, and then install one of the free ones here:
- Microsoft Security Essentials here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
- AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml

Your programs will need to be re-installed.

Thank you for your reply. I have 2 questions:

1) Before I have to backup all data, and restore to factory settings is there an "intermediate" solution that might kill some of the viruses / malware infections that we can do?

2) I was given Windows 7 ultimate as a gift but i never did anything with it. Would you recommend formatting my hard drive and installing windows 7 instead of using XP again?

Thanks

flashgordon,
OK, if you want. We will take some big hammers to it.
I cannot guarantee what the results might be. We may get a better idea on what we have when it's complete.
I will discuss the Win 7 subject with you after, if that's OK.

Please do these in the sequence given.
It might be handy to print out this sequence, or copy and save it to a Notepad file on your desktop before you run it.
That will give you access to all the instructions except the links any time you are offline.

Do not do ANY surfing in between tasks in this sequence.
Also please do not install, remove or scan with anything else while you are doing this sequence.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Download the free Antivir installer from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Save it to your desktop, but don't do anything with it yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Ad-Aware
Symantec AntiVirus

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
---------------------------------------------
SysProt Antirootkit
Download SysProt Antirootkit from the link below (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).
http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box set up the following items.
    • Process << Selected
    • Kernel Modules << Selected
    • SSDT << Selected
    • Kernel Hooks << Selected
    • IRP Hooks << NOT Selected
    • Ports << NOT Selected
    • Hidden Files << Selected
  • At the bottom of the page
    • Hidden Objects Only << Selected
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or an infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.
-----------------------------------------------
Double Click the Avira Antivir Installer on your desktop, Install the program, have it update itself, and run a full scan. Make sure you let it fix everything it finds.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

So we will be looking for the report from Sysprot Anti rootkit, the log from Combofix (zzz.exe), and the log from Avira's Antivir.
No need to post any of the logs until you are through with the Antivir scan.
Let me know how it goes.

flash,
The machine is in better condition than I would have expected, although I would have preferred to see the changes from the first run of Combofix.

If you can get Windows updated, you can continue using this machine, although it would be wise to assume that previously removed infections could have compromised any sensitive data.
Can you enable Automatic Updates? (Control Panel, Security Center, Automatic Updates ON). Windows firewall should also be ON.

You can get a Win XP Service Pack 3 "iso" file from which to make an SP3 installation CD. This is a big download, but is much faster than waiting for all the updates.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
If you install SP3 from the CD, take the machine offline and disable the AntiVirus during the installation. Then you can turn ON automatic updates and get the remainder of the patches.

It would be a good idea to run Combofix again and allow it to install the Recovery Console if you want to continue using this machine.
The recovery console shows as a quick command screen during bootup (5 seconds) that allows an extra troubleshooting avenue in case of a serious malfunction like a boot failure.
----------------------------- -------------------
Issues with Older Adobe Acrobat Programs
It's possible that PC slowdowns can be caused by one of your older Adobe Acrobat versions trying to update itself.
That program (esp Acrobat 5/6) has a buggy updater which can hang at bootup. It can phone home interminably and slow your PC to a crawl.
Anytime after your machine boots and you notice a slowdown, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager.
Click on the Processes tab, and note the names of the process files which are using most of the CPU resources. May be something like Adobeupd.exe
In any case, you should install and use the latest version of the free Acrobat reader to look at web-based PDF files, even if you keep an older Acrobat version for editing.
This will prevent PC infection due to opening a malicious web-based PDF with the older, vulnerable, application.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Reader 8.2.2

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
--------------------------------------------------------
Be very careful in the use of Punkbuster. It is actually spyware by definition. Do not dismantle any security software to get Punkbuster to work.
To be kind, the robustness and behavior of the software has been a bit erratic.
--------------------------------------------------------
The use of any P2P programs (like utorrent) can also turn the machine into a doorstop from downloaded files which have infections "planted" by Malware purveyors.
--------------------------------------------------------
Please advise on your status vis-a-vis SP3 and Automatic Updates, then proceed with this scanner:
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.
In your case, you can attach them if you wish, and let me know your SP3 and Automatic Update status.

flash,
If the Recovery Console installation didn't work for you, I won't pursue it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entry:
(this line may be missing)
O23 - Service: SessionLauncher - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\DX9\SessionLauncher.exe (file missing)
Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
----------------------------------------------
Open Notepad. Paste the following code box contents into the text.
Code: Select all
sc stop SessionLauncher
sc config SessionLauncher start= disabled
sc delete SessionLauncher
Use Notepad's File, Save As to save it to your desktop as File type All Files (not as text file or it won't work), and file name FixSvc.bat
Exit Notepad and double click on FixSvc.bat
A Command window will flash on and off.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Double click TFC on your desktop, and run it.
If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

If this goes smoothly, your machine should be clean, at least according to the tools we use.
You can delete the tools Combofix (zzz.exe), RSIT, and Sysprot from your desktop.
I would keep TFC for occasional use, and I would run a quick scan with Malware bytes Anti-malware every week or so after updating it with the Updates tab.
Good luck!

Askey,

Thanks for all of your help. I followed all of your steps. What do you think about me upgrading to Windows 7? I have the disc already...would it be wise to upgrade? Also, do you think i have alot of "crapware" loading at startup (ie not malware but unecessary registry entries and other programs that just clog up the system?)?

let me know

flashgordon,
The problem with most in-place upgrades to Win7 involves finding the drivers for the PC subsystems, like the graphics, USB, Audio, etc.
In some cases, the drivers are just not available.

You can find out about all your PC subsystems' names and versions by running Greg Topala's SIW program here: http://www.gtopala.com/
It can save a huge HTML file with all the info in it.

You can run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor to get an idea :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... visor.aspx

An Upgrade to Win7 from XP will not allow preserving Installed Programs. It would become a clean install.
Win7 works very well indeed, but is a bit more demanding of RAM. It will run in 1Gb RAM, but 2Gb is better. Don't try it on 512MB.
Make sure the Win7 copy you have is 32 bit, or you would have to also check whether your CPU Processor model could handle 64 bit.

There are some XP programs that will not run on Win 7.
They are usually audio or video programs that address hardware directly, or older 16-bit programs.
The Upgrade Advisor will tell you.

The easiest way to control startups is to install another one - Winpatrol :D
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
(You can quickly disable and re-enable startups with it).
