Redirector problem

Unread postby tahoeles » June 11th, 2010, 5:37 pm

I am a new user. I have a redirection problem. About every ten minutes or so when I select a new web site or click to go to a new link, I get redirected.

Here are two recent examples: I was in Yahoo Mail and had finished reading an email; I clicked on "back to messages" and got redirected to hxxp://www.registrydefender.com/l/index ... S&utm_term (no spaces in long url)

2nd example; I clicked on IE after boot up and instead of going to my Yahoo browser, I went to hxxp://www.new-11-today.com/finance-new ... cpvusxx245

Here are teh results of HJT scan and uninstall scan. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi tahoeles and welcome..

I'm DFW and I am going to try and help you with your Malware problem. Please observe the following points and rules while we work:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The clean up process can take time. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Some of the Logs we ask for can take some time to Analise, so please be patient.

Going over your logs, I will be back with instructions

Hi tahoeles

I see that you have AddThis Toolbar Installed,
I have no wish to alarm you unduly, only point out a possible threat if using the toolbar disclosing your personal information.

Please read there privacy Policy http://www.addthis.com/privacy

I recommend that you remove this software.

Please Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    AddThis Toolbar

Then reboot your system

TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Download and Run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hi DFW, here are the results of the MBAM run. A couple of things you might want to know. I had removed "Add this toolbar" on May 17, 2010. I don't know where it is comming from. Any ideas?

After removing the "Add this toolbar" and rebooting, my Norton AV "caught" a couple of items trying to get internet access. They were: C\Windows\System32\alg.exe and C\Windows\System32\wgaTray.exe. I thought you should know.

I have not loaded any Microsoft updates since we started the diagnosis, should I continue not to load updates?

Thanks again for you help.

Hi Tahoeles

I would leave the window updates just until we are done

C\Windows\System32\alg.exe is safe

http://www.systemlookup.com/O23/241-alg_exe.html

C\Windows\System32\wgaTray.exe is the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool, is and it is safe

AddThis Toolbar or the remains of it was showing in your logs you posted 11th June, it is not showing in the logs you posted 14th June, however I asked you to download and install
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the 14th June, the logs show you installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware while you were waiting for help on the 12th june, which
not doubt you ran a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the 12th or 13th june, that may have taken out the AddThis Toolbar, along with other signs of any other infection.

When People seeking help here run tools without the input from a helper, it just makes the process of removing any infection a lot harder, and sometimes impossible,
I can understand you wanting to get your system clean, but don't run anymore, scan or tools on your own..

So we can go forward I am going to need to see the Logs from any previous scans with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Click on the Logs tab
Now click on the first scan Log, Click open
Repeat for any others up to the 6/14/2010 2:52:39 PM
Please copy and paste into your next reply

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
Did you also download and run TFC(Temp File Cleaner) as I asked.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log or Logs.

DFW, my face is red and my ears are burning.......I did run Malware Bytes while waiting for you to help me. Seem'd like the right thing to do at the time. I ran a "full" scan and I did delete two files not in the System32 folder (there were two files marked in the system folder as well, but I did not delete them). The two files I deleted after the June 14th scan were in the System32 folder. Unfortunatly, the earlier scan logs were deleted by me when I ran the "quick" scan on the 14th.

As we go forward, I promise to keep my sticky fingers off of the keybiard until directed by you.

To recap.....I removed the "Add this toolbar" by going to control panel, add or remove programs and clicking on remove as directed by you. I removed two files after running MB on the 12th on my own. I don't remember what they were and I deleted the log file after the MB run on the 14th. I removed two more files after the MB run on the 14th as directed by you.

I understand impatient people like me make it harder for you help them. Please accept my apologies and I DO appreciate you help.

Hi DFW, I'm back. I fired up this morning and soon started getting redirects. Twice to hXXp://www.news-11-today.com. When I delete (X in the upper right corner), a new window opens with an address of hXXp://www.BankersProfits.com. Another redirect went to hXXtp://www.rapidsiteoffers.com. When I delete, a new window opens to hXXp://www.pennystock.com. Another redirect to hXXp://www.collegeloanshop.com and another to hXXp://www.happili.com.

Another item you should know.....Norton detected and killed a Trojan called FakeAV. It was in C\system volume information\.....a0102726.exe.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Tahoeles

RegQuery:

Please download RegQuery by Noviciate to your desktop.

  • Copy the following registry keypath by highlighting the text and pressing CTRL and C at the same time

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  • Double click RegQuery.exe to run the program
  • Paste the text you have copied using CRTL and V, into the textbox
  • Click the Query button
  • A Notepad file will open. Please paste the contents in your next reply
  • You may now close the RegQuery program

TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Double-click TFC.exe on your desktop to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Scan with GMER:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

While trying to save the GMER scan file to the desktop, my system hung. I tried Ctl-Alt-Del, still hung. I powered down my system, waited 30 seconds and powered back up. Before this happened, I had run RegQuery and here is the result:

Hi Tahoeles

This should help GMER

We need to unistall Spybot as it hinders the malware removal process etc, we can always reinstall when done
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
click on Spybot - Search & Destroy
Click Remove

Disable CD Emulator(s)
We need to use powerful tools to check out your system.
*If* you are are using a CD Emulator (Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD) be aware that they use hidden drivers with rootkit-like techniques to hide from other applications. When dealing with a malware infections, CD Emulators can interfere with investigative tools producing misleading or inaccurate scan results, false detection of legitimate files, cause unexpected crashes, BSODs, and general 'dross' which often makes it hard to differentiate between malicious rootkits and the legitimate drivers used by Emulators. Since CD Emulators use a hidden driver which can be seen as a rootkit and can interfere with investigative tools or cause other problems, we need to remove or disable them until disinfection is completed.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Delete any copy of GMER you have and start again
