HijackThis log. Need Help

Unread postby forza » June 2nd, 2010, 1:35 pm

Hi everyone

This is my first time using HijackThis. My laptop is running slow and I suspect malware to be the cause. Need recommendations from a HijackThis scan. Thank you.

Re: HijackThis log. Need Help

Unread postby Wingman » June 4th, 2010, 9:12 am

Hello forza ... Welcome to the forum.

My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
The logs I request can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  3. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  4. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  5. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  6. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
If you already have this program installed, please proceed to the Run: portion of these instructions.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click erunt-setup-exe, select "Run As Administrator" to run the install process. Install by following prompts.
  3. Use the default install settings...
  4. Make sure the first two check boxes -> (Create ERUNT and NTREGOPT desktop icons) are checked.
Say "NO" if prompted or asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this later.
  5. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click the desktop icon, select "Run As Administrator" or start it at the end of the setup process.
  6. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is fine.
  7. Click on OK ... then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
Vista/W7 users: right-click on ERUNT in the menu, then select "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompts, please allow it.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
GMER
The downloaded file will have a random name... this prevents malware from detecting and blocking it.
Please download GMER... random file name.exe by GMER. An alternate (zip file) download site.
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  1. Double click on the random named.exe to execute. If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load.
If using Vista, you must right click random named.exe and choose "Run As Administrator".
  2. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO <--- Important!
  3. On the right side panel, several boxes have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following: (see image below)
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All <-- don't miss this one

    Image

  4. If you don't get a warning then... Click the Rootkit/Malware tab at the top of the GMER window.
  5. Click the Scan button.
  6. Once the scan has finished... click Save. The Save... window will open.
  7. Save the scan results as gmerroot.log, save it to your Desktop.
  8. Double click on the desktop "gmerroot.log" file, to open in Notepad.
  9. Copy and paste the contents of the file gmerroot.log in your next reply.
Note: If GMER hangs or crashes your computer, Re-run it and UNCHECK "Devices" along with the other items mentioned.

Step 3.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
These log files can be found in the C:\RSIT folder
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. GMER - gmerroot.log file contents.
  3. RSIT - log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

I have no problems executing the instructions except that I cannot submit the result in this post. I've been trying many times already. Can I just submit it as an attachment instead?

Please see the forum policy on using Attachments
I would prefer ... if you have a .txt file you can attach... then copy and paste the contents (results) into the reply text entry box.
The same way you posted your original HijackThis log.

I am so sorry Wingman, but my browser keep crashing when I try to submit the result in this post. Hence, I only copy and paste the RSIT - log.txt and info.txt file contents. The gmerroot file contents is included as attachment.

1. I have no problem executing the instructions except for GMER, which crashed my computer twice before I could run and finish the scan.

2. See attachment. My computer crashed twice during the scan, so I uncheked "Devices".

3. RSIT - log.txt

4. My computer is performing better but I kinda feel like it's not reaching its full potential. Some games (like FIFA10) run poorly on my computer.

Once again, I am sorry that I have to attach the gmerroot.log in this post.

Hello forza

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I got tied up yesterday. Please don't worry about the GMER log. We can try something different. :)
I am currently reviewing your RSIT logs. In the mean time please execute the following steps.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Please run this again, as changes may have occurred between the last run and now. Better to be safe than to be sorry.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT... double-click ERUNT from the menu.
VISTA - W7 users: right-click on ERUNT from the menu, select "Run As Administrator", to run the process.

Step 2.
Defogger
CD Emulator Software (Daemon Tools, Alcohol, etc) use drivers that can interfere with rootkit scans, so we'll temporarily disable them.
Disable Drivers
Please download DeFogger... by jpshortstuff. Save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click DeFogger.exe to run the tool. The application window will appear.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click on Defogger.exe and choose "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompted, allow it.
  2. Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers.
  3. Click Yes to continue. A 'Finished!' message will appear. Click OK.
  4. Click OK when DeFogger asks to reboot the machine.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Step 3.
RootkitRevealer
Please download Rootkit Revealer from Sysinternals - © Microsoft Corporation. and save it to your desktop.
If you have a 3rd party "unzipping" program...use it to open the zipped file...then skip to Step 5. Otherwise...
  1. Right click on RootkitRevealer.zip and select "Extract All"....
  2. Click Next on the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard."
  3. Click on the Browse...button, then click on Desktop, then click OK.
  4. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  5. Double click on RootkitRevealer.exe to run it.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click on RootkitRevealer.exe and choose "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompted, allow it.
  6. From the toolbar...select File...then Scan. The scan takes a while...please be patient.
  7. When the scan is done... a message Scan complete: ## discrepancies found (## are numbers) appears at the bottom of the window.
  8. Click on File > Save... choose to save it to your Desktop... click on the Save button.
  9. A "RootkitRevealer.txt" file will be on your desktop.
Please, copy and paste the contents of RootkitRevealer.txt in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RootkitRevealer.txt file contents.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

I just realized that I forgot to attach the gmerroot.log file in my previous post. Tried to attach it here, but

couldn't because the size is too large (4.22MB).

1. I have problems with RootkitRevealer. "Interactive services dialog detection" message pops up everytime I run

RootkitRevealer. It says: "A program can't display a message on your desktop".This problem happens because of

partial incompatibility with Windows.

Then, I click "Show me the message". My screen goes blanks for a few seconds and the RootkitRevealer window

appears with a weird display (weird because my dekstop is not in the background).

I was able to run and finish the scan, but couldn't save it. Everytime I click "File", the window was maximized

and the "File" button was nowhere to be seen. So, I couldn't save the scan.

Very complicated problem in here. Sorry that my words make it complicated to understand.

2. Due to the problem described above, I couldn't post the RootkitRevealer file contents

3. The computers perfomance hasn't changed from the last time.

Hello forza

OK... let's try a different approach.

Please do not make any changes to your system: do not add or remove any software, run any scans or "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. If you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Vista - Windows 7 Users - Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be installed and run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the installation file and the executable program file & selecting: Run as Administrator. Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program. When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Step 2.
Rkill
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
Please download Rkill... by Grinler. Save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download links: Two, Three or Four
  1. Double click on the Rkill Desktop icon.
  2. A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
    1. If this does not happen... delete the file, then download and use the next link provided.
    2. If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
Do not reboot your machine until asked to do so. If no version of Rkill would run, please let me know.
When finished, Notepad will open with a log file, automatically saved at C:\rkill.log.
  3. Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log file, in your next reply.
Please leave Rkill on the Desktop unless instructed otherwise.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software, trying to "protect" itself from being terminated or removed. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen, then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself, so that Rkill can perform its routine.

Step 3.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button. <<---Important!
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Step 4.
Kaspersky Online Scanner.
Vista - W7 users: You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.

Please go to Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner © Kaspersky Lab to perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Read the "Advantages - Requirements and Limitations" then press... the ACCEPT...button.
The latest program and definition files will be downloaded. It takes time, please be patient, let it finish.
  2. Once the files have been downloaded, click on the SETTINGS...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the SAVE...button, if you made any changes.
  3. Now under the Scan section on the left:
      Select My Computer
The program will start scanning your system. This takes a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  4. Save the scan results as a Text file ... save it to your desktop.
  5. Copy and paste the saved scan results file in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RKill - rkill.log file contents.
  3. MBAM scan results.
  4. KAS scan results.
  5. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,

Hello forza

Vista - Windows 7 Users - Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be installed and run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the installation file and the executable program file & selecting: Run as Administrator. Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program. When prompted, please select: Allow. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. If you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 2.
Rkill
You should still have this on your desktop, if so, ignore the download instructions.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
Please download Rkill... by Grinler. Save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download links: Two, Three or Four
  1. Double click on the Rkill Desktop icon.

Step 3.

Step 4.
ComboFix
Please download ImageComboFix.exe... © Copyrighted to sUBs. Save it to your desktop. <<--- IMPORTANT!! .
Alternate download sites: Mirror #2 or Mirror #3

If you previously downloaded ComboFix, please delete that version and download it again. This tool is frequently updated.

The first thing you need to do is print out How-To-Use-ComboFix. Read these instructions thoroughly.
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix. All open windows will need to be closed!

  1. Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  2. Double click the ComboFix.exe icon on your desktop to begin execution. If you receive the "Open File - Security Warning"... press Run.
  3. Press Yes to the Disclaimer prompt.
ComboFix screen appears... preparing to run. ComboFix will now begin creating a System Restore Point and then backup your registry.
  4. If not already installed... Press Yes to the "Install Recovery Console" prompt.
  5. Press Yes at the Recovery Console installation results prompt... Even if unsuccessful, have ComboFix continue the scan.
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash!
ComboFix will disconnect you from the Internet, may cause your desktop to disappear and also change your clock settings... this is normal, so don't worry. They will be restored when finished. The ComboFix window data will be changing with various "Stages"... completed. When finished the screen will show that a log is being created.
ComboFix disables autorun of all CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal and increase security.
When finished... Notepad will open ... ComboFix will produce a log file called "log.txt".
  6. Please copy/paste the contents of log.txt... in your next reply.
Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, NOT for general public or personal use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to serious problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. This site, sUBs and myself will not be responsible for any damage caused to your machine by misusing or running ComboFix on your own. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

** Enable your Antivirus and Firewall, before connecting to the Internet again! **

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RKill - rkill.log file contents.
  3. ComboFix scan results.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,

Hello forza

One thing I noticed is you are limited in the amount of free space on your System drive. System drive C: has 8 GB (11%) free of 71 GB. While it may seem that 8GB is a lot of space, there are some Windows functions that require at least 15% free space... my preference is 25% free space.
Not having enough "free space" on the system drive can impact overall performance. I would advise trying to free some space on this drive.

The KAS scan found some entries but I want to get another scan to make sure these are not false readings.

Step 2.
Fix HijackThis entries
Important!
Please temporarily disable any anti-spyware programs you are using, listed Here
...so they will not interfere with the entries we will be fixing in HijackThis.
  1. Run HijackThis
Vista - W7 users: Right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
    • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  2. When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present):
*Only check those items listed below*
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
  3. After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis
  4. Click the Fix Checked...button. Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.
  5. Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.

Step 3.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Vista - W7 users: You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted... then double click on it to install.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
    • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 4.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. If so, just ignore the download instructions.
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.

Attention!
In order for both info and log files to be produced again, I need you to delete the existing RSIT folder:
  1. C:\RSIT <-- delete this entire folder , then...

  2. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  3. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 (Notepad) text files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
These log files can be found in the C:\RSIT folder
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. ESET online scan results.
  3. New RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Re: HijackThis log. Need Help

There is no option for me to run HJT as administrator. Should I just double click it? Which HJT log should I put in my next reply, since I only "Do a system scan only"?

Hello forza,

I have edited my last post, the New HJT log in the next reply items has been removed. This was placed there by mistake. I apologize for any confusion, this may have caused.

Regarding the free space on my System drive, I will later move one or two of my games from C: to D:, when I'm done with all the cleaning processes.

1. How long HJT takes to fix items? I've waited for hours and no notification appears to indicate that those two items are fixed. When I run HJT again, those two items are still there.

2. ESET online scan results.

The subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The logon type field indicates the kind of logon that occurred. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The New Logon fields indicate the account for whom the new logon was created, i.e. the account that was logged on.

The network fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Logon GUID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate this event with a KDC event.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.
