Dr Watson Post Mortem

Unread postby sakaya » May 21st, 2010, 8:30 am

I recently removed the Internet Security 2010 virus from my computer, but I think there still might be some problems with my PC, because I am getting quite a lot of errors from Dr Watson Post Mortem (I read this is a telltale sign of problems elsewhere on the computer) and my computer will sometimes become slow for no apparent reason. Here is the scan.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read Back up your files

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Cypher,

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention a couple of details regarding the problem. After I removed the virus and cleaned up the associated files via a Malware remover from Microsoft, I found that I could not access Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. I reinstalled Chrome (my usual choice) and created a new user profile. My internet PPPOE internet connection was also completely unusable so I re-configured that too.

Everything seemed fine at first, but I soon started getting the Dr Watson Post Mortem error followed by my computer freezing up and having to be restarted. Observation since my last post seems to indicate that the error mainly occurs while I am accessing internet sites via Chrome.

Thanks again for your time. Here is the uninstall list:

Hi sakaya.
Do you recognize this IP address?
61.207.11.153

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    BitComet 1.13

  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next.

No anti-virus

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors.

Note: You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Next.

Please post a new Uninstall list.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • Let me know if you recognize the IP address.
  • Uninstall list.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

No, I don't know it.

I re-installed Microsoft Security Essentials (I had temporarily deleted it) and it is up to date with the most recent definitions. P2P software has been removed. The system performance remains the same. The error occurs at a seemingly random time, sometimes just after I start up my internet connection or other times hours later. I can confirm that Internet Explorer also crashes in the same way, followed by the computer completely freezing.

MSE tells me there are two threats to my computer, but when I click "clean computer" or "apply actions" the status comes up as "not found" and the threat warning remains when I scan again. I have included the details below:

Dectected item: Boaxxe.E,
Alert level: severe
Recommendation: remove
Status: suspended

Category: Trojan

Description: This program is dangerous and executes commands from an attacker.

Recommendation: Remove this software immediately.

Microsoft Security Essentials detected programs that may compromise your privacy or damage your computer. You can still access the files that these programs use without removing them (not recommended). To access these files, select the 'Allow' action and click 'Apply actions'. If this option is not available, log on as administrator or ask the local administrator for help.

Items:
file:C:\WINDOWS\system32\lquinme.dll

Category: Trojan

Recommendation: Remove this software immediately.

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply. I am indeed in Japan, but nowhere near Osaka. I'm not sure where that IP is from.

The system performance has improved quite a bit since the cleanup of temp files. No recurrence of the error so far. Thanks.

Hi sakaya.
Hi. Thanks for the quick reply. I am indeed in Japan

You're welcome.
Ok that IP is most likely related to you're internet provider.
Please continue with the instructions below.

Hi. I'm trying to use the ESET scanner, but it takes a long time and the computer crashes from the forementioned error before the scan can finish. I will try again and update this thread if I am successful.
