HELP!!! fake Windows Security virus takes over everything

Unread postby jlove6679 » May 20th, 2010, 1:13 pm

running Windows XP .
the fake windows security alert redirects all action, takes over all processes. Doesnt allow anything else to be done or run in this profile, which happens to be the administrator profile, The guest limited access profile can be used for minimal functions, without this fake windows security popping up. This profile also has no access to make changes to hard drive or even to scan the other profile.
In safemode with networking now even trying to fix this

Unread postby askey127 » May 23rd, 2010, 8:45 am

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. Recent infections change often, and are specifically designed to make their removal very difficult. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is not possible to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and the programs we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate taking your computer to a repair shop.
In this case, it is not at all clear that this machine can be rescued without a complete reformat and re-install of Windows.
If you still wish to receive help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:

There is a lot to do here, but it all has to be done at once or the machine will get re-infected.
If you Cannot do these steps, you will need to reformat and re-install Windows. In that case, there are Systems/Hardware forums can help you do that.

You will need access to a clean PC and the use of a USB Flash drive to transfer files.
From a Clean PC, download the following files onto a flash drive. If you can remove everything else from the flash drive first, it will be a bit easier:
Since the infection will try to prevent running this RKill file, download as many of these six versions as you can, so we have a chance to get one of them to run:
(they are actually all the same, functionally)
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/gr ... xplore.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/gr ... plorer.exe

Now download the file from here to the flash and WRITE DOWN THE FILENAME. It will be a random name.
http://mbam.malwarebytes.org/program/random.php

Now download the Antivir Installer from here and save it to the flash:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/ ... tion.shtml

Start up the infected computer and boot into your administrator account.
DO NOT REBOOT AGAIN UNTIL INSTRUCTED

Plug in the flash drive and try to run one of the Rkill files.
Try as many as you need until you get one that runs.

Once you get a version fo Rkill to run, copy the random named file from the flash drive to the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Antimalware\ folder.
Double click the random named file to run it.
Click the Updates tab and have it update. Click on the OK button whether it finishes updating or not.
Click the Scan tab, choose FULL SCAN and click Scan.
This will take a while. When it's done you will get a message. Click OK.
You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.
A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware.
MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine.
When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them.
If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please NOW ALLOW IT TO DO SO.
Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please proceed:
Whether it reboots or not It will display a log file stating what was done. Read it and exit Notepad.
If it did not reboot, REBOOT now, and sign in to your administrator account.

Double click the file avira_antivir_personal_en.exe on the flash and let it install and update.
Run a full scan with it and let it remove everything it finds.

Reply back here with the results of your adventures.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
