Redirect problem

Unread postby Nottageek » May 7th, 2010, 9:56 am

I may be infected.
In March my daughter and friend installed a couple of things.
Zune, and an Ask.com toolbar. My home pages changed (both Firefox and IE) to Ask.com. :x
Uninstalled the toolbar. Changed my home page.
A Zune folder shows up in my Documents – My Music, My Pictures, but not My Videos.
Zune does not show up in programs, control panel, or any Add and Remove list (Windows, Spybot, Ccleaner). I do find a Zune driver, Msft_User_ZuneDriver_01_09_00.Wdf,

Since then I have rare but occasional problems.
Sometimes (not often) I get web page redirects, several on April 1. None of the redirects seem to go to any kind of malicious page.
April 1 I clicked on my CNN bookmark and got a bogus page with some guy claiming he didn't know what he was doing but soon his would be the most visited site.
Yahoo searches sent me to a CNN page saying page could not be found. When I clicked for the next page of results I got the same CNN page.
May 5, I clicked on a Cancer health site, page showed for a moment then redirected. In my F-Fox add-ons I disabled until I found Java Console 6.0.20 maybe was the problem. The page no longer redirects.
May 6, I clicked on my CNN bookmark got the Washington Post. I tried with IE also, same result.
Today, clicked on a regular bookmark page loaded then redirected to an attack page. Attempted to download a variant of Win32/Kryptik.GN trojan.
Since April 12 ESET has blocked 8 attacks, in 3 time frames. Today, 4/25 @ 3:00, 4/12 @ 11:45.
Disabled Java Script.

When I shut FF down and run Ccleaner sometimes it says FF is still running. Seems to take awhile to shut down. Especially if I'd watched videos. Speaking of which I used to be able to do a pretty good job of streaming now it buffers a little more often. Usually not real bad though.

I don't do online banking but I do have some sensitive passwords.
I have a few E-mail accounts, I tried to send myself a message from my Yahoo mail to my Lycos Mail and it took over a day to get there. Had to enable Java to register, couldn't check e-mail with Java off. If I don't respond it is only because of a computer problem.

I have done many scans, all say I am clean.
I have scanned as Smart scan, Full scan, Regular Mode and Safe Mode.
Installed programs I have scanned with:
ESET NOD 32
Spybot
Widows Defender
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Windows Malicious SW removal tool (Downloaded version)

Also have done online scans:
Windows Malicious SW removal tool (Monthly)
Panda
ESET
Norton – said there might be a problem with Open Office and I should buy Norton, to be sure.

Sometimes I am Wireless, usually Ethernet through my WiFi Router. Right now I have by passed the router and am plugged directly into my Clearwire Receiver/Modem by way of Ethernet. Trying this for awhile to see if problem repeats. It did.
Hope I haven't babbled too much. :geek:

Thank you xixo_12 for your help.
Spy Bot has been removed.

Questions:
Is there some way of knowing if this infection might have stolen my Social Security #.
I signed on to a Government web site that requires that I give that number.
Also, if I had used a Linux distro booted from a CD or installed on a separate partition would that have been safe? Y/N

I noticed some odd things, my kids are adults so that is no surprise.
BitTorrent seems to be installed. Doesn't show up in programs.
I have used it in the past to download Linux and Open Office, BUT this is a new HDD and I don't believe I have ever installed it on this one. Am I a bot?

I left RSIT set for 1 month I am sure I have had this infection since at least March.

DEFOGGER:
Ran OK

Hi,
Let's proceed.

Is there some way of knowing if this infection might have stolen my Social Security #.

Firstly, I have to check about it. Just follow my instructions.

Also, if I had used a Linux distro booted from a CD or installed on a separate partition would that have been safe? Y/N

Yes

First,
OTM by Old Timer.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double-click on OTM.exe.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
    :processes
    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
    "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe"=-
    :files
    C:\Program Files\BitTorrent
    :commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar, Code box into OTMoveIt3 (1).) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM.

Note:
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
  • If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Next,
CKScanner.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double click on CKScanner.exe to run it and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Next,
Kaspersky Online AV Scan
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next.

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • Content of OTM log
  • Content of CKFiles.txt
  • Content of Kaspersky scan log

Thank you xixo for spending so much of your time with me.
I hope this post shows you have lead me out of the filth to a clean computer.
Do we know if there is a risk my social security number might have been compromised?

Hi,

Currently I saw nothing. I need to ask something.

Do you still have any problems? If yes, we will take a look deeper. No sign of any password stealer. So I can say, it's clean.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your time. Your help has been exceptional.
So far I haven't noticed any problems, computer seems to have a bit more zip.
I really haven't used the computer to go to password sites since we began.
Thinking back some of my problem times were when I had to log on with a password.
My AT&T page would log me off every few seconds when I was shopping for a new cell phone. The back button got me back, I didn't have to reveal my cell phone number and pass word.
I hope all is well with the computer.

I also hope all is well with you too.
Thanks again.

xixo,

After running OTM and restarting I received an error report pop up:
ESET GUI has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Error signature:
AppName: egui.exe AppVer: 4.0.474.0 ModName: eguiupdate.dll
ModVer: 4.0.474.0 Offset: 00008692

REBOOT

This time no error report.

In the past I have used Spybot although I am not sure it has caught anything in years.
Ccleaner seems to clean any cookies out that Spybot didn't like.
I noticed you didn't mention reinstalling Spybot.
Should I not bother reinstalling?

When I started having problems I installed Spyware blaster, I had used it in the past.
I have also used AdAware but quit using it several years ago.
Malwarebytes has been installed from the beginning.
I have used ESET as my only anti-virus SW for several years.
I use Windows Update manually 2 or 3 times a week.
I run it so often because I also use Windows Defender.

Do any of these programs conflict with each other or any of the ones you mention?

Thanks again

Hi,
You're most welcome :)

About ESET : no worries, sometimes system act like that, just give reboot and it's good to go.
About Spybot : It's your own preferences. If you want to reinstall, go ahead ;)

Just keep in your mind, only one antivirus should run on your system to avoid conflict. Other than that (anti-spyware), it's up to you.

Any other questions? If no, I will ask this topic to be close soon.
