Nasty trojan, possibly other virus/spyware also, need help!

Unread postby karismaflores » April 24th, 2010, 2:36 pm

Hi, and thanks in advance for reading -

I'm running Windows XP Professional, service pack 3. My kid downloaded some video with a really nasty trojan, which is an EXE file called backweb (there were numbers following but I was unable to save them). I searched online w/ the exact file name for help regarding the virus and found the following instructions, which I was nervous to follow w/out knowing the author's credibility and the virus attacked the page before I could finish reading it. I was able to copy and paste the text which I will include at the end with my log and uninstall list because it might help you understand the issue.

Also, there was a secondary problem of something called AntiSpyware-soft which launched itself and began scanning my system. I have tried several virus removal/spyware programs (all recommended by Cnet such as IOBit Security, AdAware, had AVG but removed it it conflicted w/ AdAware). Apparently the programs can't remove it entirely it relaunches itself every time I restart. Here's the info I found which seemed to be a pretty accurate description of where the virus is since one of my programs also found a problem in that same registry key line.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Actually what the problem is,,,, this file is not present on ur hard drive,,, its actually residing in the Registry,,,,
if u got Start>Run>regedit
and navigate to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

in the right pane u will find a AppInit_DLLs entry, and when u right click it and choose Modify, under the Value data, u will see the above file !!!!

and what u need is just to remove it from there to get rid of this message !!!!
for this restart ur system in SAFEMODE, login as Administrator if XP, and follow these instructions carefully !!!!!

=====================================================================================
The key to removing this problem is the registry key called

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\AppInit_DLLs

You have to remove this key. The value of this key may look blank for you, but it is not. They hide the value so you can't see it. This registry key tells Windows to load the trojan DLL every time ANY application is run giving it complete control to do whatever it wants. So you need to remove it so that the trojan DLL cannot load and keep re-infecting your pc.

The way to remove the registry key is not obvious. If you just delete it from regedit, since the trojan DLL is loaded, it will re-add it right back. (Try it. Delete the AppInit_DLLs registry key and hit F5. Notice that it's added right back by the trojan). So what you have to do is the following which worked for me.

1. Rename the HLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows folder to Windows2.
2. Now delete the AppInit_DLLs key under the Windows2 folder.
3. Hit F5 and notice that AppInit_DLLs doesn't come back.
4. Rename the Windows2 folder back to Windows.

Now that AppInit_DLLs is gone, run the latest Adaware 6 to remove the trojan for good. Reboot your machine. Check the registry and make sure AppInit_DLLs is still gone. Your computer should be free of this for good now.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log and a fresh Uninstall List

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by Trojan.Peacomm.E More info here.

It gathers confidential information and email addresses from the compromised computer. It also sends unsolicited email and lowers security settings.

IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:

  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a backdoor Trojan, the worst kind.

If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:

  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Unfortunately, there is a lot of sensitive information on my computer. I would like to follow your recommendation to remove it completely, but here is my dilemma - the computer that I have was purchased used from a PC repair shop and I don't have the original discs to reinstall the operating system and software. Can I obtain that anywhere online or would I have to purchase it? Please advise... I'm on a very tight budget and can't afford to buy all new sofware. Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks again,

K

The best way to get the install CD/discs you need is to either contact Microsoft directly using and going through their Help and Support section of Microsoft's website and explaining your situation. Or you can try contacting the Repair shop from where you bought the PC and see if they have the CD/discs.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I plan to take it in to the shop where I bought it and see if they can reinstall the operating system and apps for me. I have to wait until next monday (my next day off) to get it in there. I'll let you know what happens with it. :) Thanks so much for your assistance!

Thanks for the update. :)

Once you get your computer back from the shop next week, let me know and I'll give you some tips to help keep your computer clean so this doesn't happen again in the future.
