Disconnecting Disease

Unread postby tincat » April 28th, 2010, 12:11 am

My computer will connect to the internet, but is not keen on connecting to any sites, and it is generally disconnecting from the internet after a minute or five. I am on dial-up, it is always 46kbps or above, and never disconnects itself.
About six weeks ago I downloaded pacman, an swf file (neave) and played it a bit for about 2 weeks. A visitors teenager used the computer one evening, tried to download flash player 10, and the next time I tried to use pacman it wouldn't open. I googled it and found somewhere that I now needed ...flash player 10, although I hadn't had it before. Eventually I found instructions that worked...I had to go into options somewhere and allow adobe.com to install plug-ins. I did not, however, un-allow it for a couple of hours, and when I looked at firefox>addons there were seven, plus the flash player...
I don't know that these all came at the one time, only that I have never done this before, nor looked in the add-on box. (Adobe Acrobat PDF Plug-in for Firefoxand Netscape; Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.170.4 NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java Deploy; Java Platform SE 6 U17 Classic Java Plug-in 1.6.0_17 for Netscape and Mozilla; Microsoft DRM Netscape Network Object; Microsoft DRM Store Netscape Plugin; Mozilla Default Plug-in; Windows Media Player Plug-inDynamic Link Library Npdsplay dll - plus the flash player)
I have managed to disable all of them except the Mozilla Default Plug-in, and I have deleted the flash player.
This hasn't cured the problem, so maybe I didn't need to???
I also updated Avira, and SpywareBlaster around the same time.
I did google around, and tried checking whether 'disconnect after 1min idle', or 'disconnect after rec. mail' were ticked, and so on and on.

The two little blue screens and the zonealarm thingy in the taskbar are very 'dead' compared to normal.
Thanks for your time...Jenni.
