Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
Hi History_Geek and welcome to Malware Removal. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Security Application Check:

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe to your Desktop from one of the links below.

Link 1
Link 2

  • Right-click on SecurityCheck.exe and select Run as Administrator then follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Right-click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to start RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Security Check Log.
  • Both RSIT Logs. <-- Post them individually please. IE: one Log per post/reply.

Re: Multi virus infection

Unread postby Dakeyras » April 19th, 2010, 5:48 am

Hi. :)

Thanks for replying
You're welcome!

Multiple Anti-Virus Advice:

Having more than one of the aforementioned installed and active in system memory will cause a system conflict and actually lesson overall online security. So please uninstall one only of the following:-

avast! Free Antivirus
Microsoft Security Essentials

Now please go to Start(Vista Orb) >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and remove only one the following (if present):

Either remove:-

avast! Free Antivirus

Or:-

Microsoft Security Essentials

Remember only one needs to be uninstalled.

To do so click once on one of the above then click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

Note: TFC will run automatically in elevated admin mode so no need to right click upon the executable.

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.

The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log. <-- Only one log will be produced this time.

Unread postby Dakeyras » April 19th, 2010, 6:20 pm

Hi. :)

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both in due course.

Next:

Now please go to Start(Vista Orb) >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 9.3.1
Java(TM) 6 Update 19
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

To do so click once on each of the above and click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Custom Batch File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
@Echo on
net stop winmgmt
rd%systemroot%\system32\wbem\repository
net start winmgmt
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look similar to this: Image

Now right-click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat and select Run as Administrator to run the batch file.

A command window will open, when prompted type in Y then hit the Enter/Return key.

When completed the command window will close. Now please Reboot(restart) your computer. <-- Make sure you do this.

Scan with GMER:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Right-click on the the .exe file and select Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • GMER Log.

Hi once again thank you. You asked how the computer is operating...I am concerned that several times after I re booted the avast needed repairing. After I removed the Adobe and Java programs it took a long time to shut down..is that normal? Also the computer didn't like the scan that you asked me to do it took three attempts thecomputer kept trying to block me still not too certain if it completed the task. I let it run for a while until there seemed to be no activity for 15 mins then saved . I have posted the log below

Hi. :)

Hi once again thank you. You asked how the computer is operating...I am concerned that several times after I re booted the avast needed repairing.
You're welcome!

OK it is possible malware may have corrupted the installation, we will address this in due course.

Also the computer didn't like the scan that you asked me to do it took three attempts thecomputer kept trying to block me still not too certain if it completed the task. I let it run for a while until there seemed to be no activity for 15 mins then saved . I have posted the log below
Hmm it is possible some of the Roxio related software may have hindered the scan as certain types of pseudo CD emulation software does. OK please carry out the below:-

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Right click DeFogger and select Run as Administrator to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Next:

Please re-run GMER again as per my instructions here and post a new log, thank you.

Hi. :)

Hi hope this has worked!
Just fine!

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Right-click on erunt-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: If it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download/Run ComboFix:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • ComboFix Log.

Hi again, followed your instructions but after completing the combo fix scan I noticed that the Avast icon was no longer in the tray at the bottom so I tried clicking on the desk top icon the following message cam up saying it was registry key marked for deletion. The same message appeared when clicking on the internet icon. I am typing this on a different computer- don't know how I brought this about! Sorry I have the log but at the moment can't send you it :?

Hi. :)

Ok please follow my advice below and do not make any changes to your machine unless I advise so, thank you.

Next:

If your computer was not rebooted after the ComboFix run please do so now. If it was rebooted, do so again now.

Next:

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click yourStart(Vista Orb) button and go to "Explore") then navigate to the following:

C:\ >> Windows >> ERDNT >> a folder named 20-04-2010 >> now right-click on ERDNT.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Follows the prompts and reboot your computer if not prompted to do so.

Next:

Please download Win32Diag from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

  • Right-click on Win32Diag.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the application.
  • A black command prompt window shall appear.
  • It will now begin to scan. This may take a while, please be patient until the scan is complete.
  • Once it's done, in the black screen it will say Finished! Press any key to exit....
  • Press any key to exit.
  • A log file called Win32KDiag.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of that log file here in your next reply please.

Hi. :)

when i clicked on erunt i gotr a message say ing that the folder you asked me to open didi not exist and did i want to create one?
Hmmm that to myself sounds very much like the backup was not created correctly for some reason possibly. Not to worry, ignore my prior instructions for the time being and please post the ComboFix log if able and we will go from there, thank you.
