Hiren's BootCD

These instructions are for 10.2 I don't know how much has changed to 10.4 but you can download 10.2 by changing it at choose another virsion above the continue botton

*** Please print these instructions ***

    1. Download Hiren's BootCD Iso to the desktop of a clean computer.
    2. Extract the zipped HirensBootCD.zip to your desktop.
    3. Open the extracted HirensBootCD folder and extract the zipped HirensBootCD.iso.
    4. Double click the BurnToCD.cmd bat file contained in the HirensBootCD folder. This will launch BurnCDCC.
    5. Insert a blank CD in your drive.
    6. Press Start. This will burn the image to disc. After it has completed...
    7. Restart your sick computer and boot from the HBCD you created.
      • If your PC is not booting from the CD, you need to change the boot order:
        • Restart your PC
        • As soon as you get an image, press the Setup key. This is usually F2, F10, F12 or Del. On some machines the key can also be a different one. It should, however, be stated on the screen which key is the setup key.
        • Once you enter the computer's BIOS, use the arrow keys and tab key to move between elements. Press enter to select an item to change.
        • Navigate to the tab, where you can set the boot order. It should be called Boot or Boot order
        • The tab should now show your current boot order.
        • If the CD-drive is not at the top, please navigate to the CD-Rom drive with the keys arrows. Then move it to the top of the list. The keys for switching boot position are usually + to move up and - to move down. However they can be different, but they should be stated in the help, so that you can find them easily.
        • Once the CD-drive is on top of the boot order, navigate to Exit and select Exit saving changes.
      • Your PC should now boot from your CD.
      • Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
    8. When the CD boots choose "DOS BootCD".

Image

At the Hiren's BootCD main menu, select Next and hit Enter.

Image

At the second menu select 1 MBR (Master Boot Record)Tools

Image

In the list of MBR Tools select 1 MBR Work 1.08

Image

This screen will show the hard drive configuration.

Image

Type 5 to Install standard MBR code then hit Enter
Type 1 to select Standard then hit Enter
Type Y then hit Enter to confirm
Type E then hit Enter to exit
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the machine

If you have any questions please ask before you start

Morning Gringo,
Sorry about the delay, I had a tough week at work and need a night off.

Ok here we go....
The burn process went well.
There where minor changes from the way you said it would go.
(Windows 7 machine extracted everything at once, no second extraction)
But I got it done and it was easy.

BIOS already in correct order...good to go.
Re-start machine with CD in drive, no problems.
Followed steps.....easy.
On the final step: install standard mbr code.
Is this process was almost instantanous?
I received no "please wait" no "loading" messages.....nothing.
Had a little trouble exiting, but figured it out.
(Ctrl+Alt+Del at DOS command not main menu screen)
Machine came back up just fine.
My 'friend' did not cause the machine to churn upon re-start.
He did create those 5 files again, and that was a bit worrisome.
So what is next? How do we tell if he is dead or alive?

Good afternoon

Good to see you back

"I had a tough week at work and need a night off."
    I hear you

ok the best way to check for this is to run the tool we have been running

HelpAsst_mebroot_fix

  • Close out all other open programs and windows.
  • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix to run it and follow any prompts.
  • If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
  • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    • helpasst -mbrt
  • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
  • When it completes, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

*Note*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

  • mbr -f
  • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
  • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
  • Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    • helpasst -mbrt
  • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
  • When it completes, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

let me have this new log and we will see where to go from here

Gringo,
Knock on gumbo limbo it appears we might be getting somewhere......maybe.
Is this good or bad news?

Some Notes
>HelpAssistant profile directory exists at C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant
Present before I did the BootCD.
>termsrv32.dll not found
Me again...sorry.
But he was really p*ssing me off this a.m. with frequent lock ups.

The re-start just now went smoother and took less time than it has been lately.

Good Evening

Things are looking better

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Vista and Win 7 Users please Right Click and run as Admin all programs that I ask you to run

uninstall some programs

    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 6.0.1
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    and click on remove

    Java(TM) 6 Update 13<<--do not remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts
  • After the update is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files

    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.

Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

In your next post I need the following

    1. log from combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Morning Gringo

"let me know of any problems you may have had"
None really. Something strange went on with a download out of I.E. last night.
But it was late and it could have been my fault.

"How is the computer doing now?"
Much better thank you. I have been slowly pressing the machine harder and harder.
Doing things that before would have guaranteed a lock up....
and I haven't had it lock up once yet. Start up and shut down are much smoother now.
Back to where the was machine was before all of this happened.
Still have not opened up FF to see how it is doing.....on the to do list

Notes:
All these entries are from TinyWatcher post ComboFix run.
I figured they where all created by ComboFix so I confirmed(allowed)them all:

All: "File was created"
Directory c:\Qoobox :
Directory c:\ComboFix :
File C:\WINDOWS\swreg.exe
File C:\WINDOWS\sed.exe :
File C:\WINDOWS\zip.exe :
File C:\WINDOWS\SWXCACLS.exe
File C:\WINDOWS\SWSC.exe
File C:\WINDOWS\NIRCMD.exe
File C:\WINDOWS\grep.exe
and.....
Registry entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\catchme\ImagePath" (created) :
New entry was set to <\??\C:\DOCUME~1\Rigel\LOCALS~1\Temp\catchme.sys>
(man I don't like the name of that one)

Unread postby gringo_pr » April 11th, 2010, 5:26 pm

greetings

things are looking good - lets do a couple more checks

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

:Kaspersky scan:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.

Gringo,
Quick question.
I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware already.(since begining of Jan.)
Do I un-install the one I have and start over?
Or do I just run the scan out of the one I have after updating?

TIA

Morning Gringo

The computer is doing fine.
I still have not opened FF, I will.
I have a question.
I have an external hard drive that data was backed up on during the first part of this adventure.
(now disconnected)Is there a possibility that it is infected? If so how do I tell?

I think you are going to like the look of this....I do.
Onward to clean up of tools!

Hello

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point.

:Uninstall ComboFix:

  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Image

:DeFogger:

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

:remove tools:
Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
    • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

    Turn On Automatic Updates
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:
you have a couple of good antispyware programs on this computer but you still can try some of these others to see if you like them also

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
    • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.

    • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
    • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.

please read this great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware:
and
this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered.........

If you were infected .... Stand Up and be Counted.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

Evening Gringo,

Nope, I have no further questions.

I would just like to say how much I really/really do appreciate all your help.
I should have seeked help a whole lot sooner,
but pride and ego stand in the way of better judgement sometime.
Again Thank You for all your help.

Best of luck to you.
