askey127,
there is a JDK 6 update 19. There is no option for the JRD or JDK in the update 18 version.

You are right. Sun just updated that page.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 19 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE.

Askey127,
I cannot get Kapersky to finish the scan. It seems to lock up on itunes folder. I am trying to run in the evening after work and don't have time to sit with it until Sunday. Any suggestions how to keep it from hanging up on me?

Try running this one instead.
-----------------------------------------------
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Disable or Exit your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile will be created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please paste the contents of this file in your post.

Here is the log from the ESET scan.
A note on the Kapinsky scan. I said it was stalling in my last post. What it did a couple times later when I tried again was give me warning that virtual memory was too low and it was increasing space. Some programs would not be allowed to run during the process.

bilbosgrdn,
I don't see any other malware on your system.
If things are running normally, please do the following to finish up.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

OK Askey127,
The system restore point is set and the disk cleanup in the system restore section is done. I have taken not that this is not to be done regularly but only after removal of malware.
I appreciate all the help you have given me. Things are running much, much better and we are not getting requests for payment information and the like.

Earlier I asked about how to know what processes are not necessary and you told me you could give me help on that and security issues. Is now a good time to ask for that advice?

I now have AVG on this system. Removed Avast just before contacting you. What do you think about either of them? Should I get and use Kapersky? What about firewalls? Which do you recommend. Apparently the firewall on this computer was turned off. I think the kids thought is was slowing stuff down and turned it off. We were only using the windows firewall and I am sure it is not suffecient protection either.

Again, your help is greatly appreciated. I notice you were up very early to reply to me to help solve my problems. I would read your posts just after you sent them or at work and had to wait until evening to do the work.

Kapersky. Was the virtual memory problem related to the excess processes running?

bilbosgrdn,
You do appear to have an excessive number of startup programs running.
Removing some could help your system.
However, you don't necessarily want to Uninstall all of them, but just prevent them from automatically starting unless you call them up.

You are asking for very specific suggestions for your situation, so here is:
When a machine is stressed a bit for resources, you need to also look at the antivirus applications.
AVG is one of the heaviest users of resources. I would suggest, in your case, that you use either the Free or the Premium version of Avira Antivir.
The paid version is one of the least expensive AVs with a very high detection rate, and easy on resources. ($26 USD per year, 20 Euros)
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/av ... virus.html

The way to do it is arrange to download whichever installer you choose, and save it to your desktop.
Then Uninstall AVG and run the installer for Antivir right away so you won't have any significant unprotected time.
After installing and running a first scan, go to Control Panel, Security Center and check for the Windows Firewall. If it's OFF, turn it ON.
Keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and consider the "Pay" version of it also. ($26 USD once/lifetime.)

Now about the startups:
One of the best programs to handle this is Winpatrol:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
You can Disable or Enable any startup item by right clicking the Scotty Dog icon, and using the startups tab.

If you will post a fresh HiJackThis log and Uninstall list, I can make a few additional suggestions to speed up the machine.
Unless there are features you "must have", all toolbars are primarily for the benefit of the purveyors, for example.

Ok. AVG is uninstalled and Avira Antivar is installed and running.
Winpatrol is installed and running. Seems to be working correctly because it was telling me Avira was wanting to run. I don't know how to use it yet. I will do some reading.

Here is the Hijackthis log followed by the uninstall log.
I appreciate this extra help you are giving me. Things are much, much better already. Just some lessons on fine tuning.

bilbosgrdn,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate1c9bd44d15f8536) (gupdate1c9bd44d15f8536) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
O23 - Service: Google Software Updater (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - avgrsstx.dll (file missing)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Replace the Current HOSTS File with MVPs
Download HostsXpert and unzip (extract) it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program. Give whatever Permissions are required.
  • In the bottom half of the left pane, click on File Handling
  • If the first button at the top is labeled Make Writeable?, click on it so the label changes to Make Read Only
  • Click third button from the bottom, labeled Download. A couple new buttons will appear at the top.
  • Click on the top button labeled MVPs Hosts and choose Replace
  • When asked to verify if you want to Replace present Hosts file, click OK.
  • When it finishes , click on File Handling again.
  • Click the button at the top labeled Make Read Only, so the label changes to Make Writeable?
  • Hit the X in the upper right corner to exit HostsXpert
If you have a separate third party firewall, or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected

If you use Firefox,
Click Firefox in the top bar, and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit from the Main window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
One last thing-if you wish to protect your machine from those less responsible about web surfing, you can change your user account password, don't tell the others, and generate a separate LIMITED account from Control Panel, User Accounts.
You could use the Guest account for this purpose as well. It is a limited account by default.
The new User will have to set up their own desktop and e-mail, but will have much less ability to cause incidental damage to the operating system.

I would check on eHome and AOL startups. Those are usually not necessary, and Winpatrol can disable them.
If it doesn't work satisfactorily, you can re-enable them. Any of them can be launched from Start, Programs, regardless.
If you don't use AOL, I would Uninstall it (them) along with Viewpoint (they go together).
If you don't write Java programs, you can Uninstall : Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5 SDK

You should be good to go.

Askey127,
All suggestions completed and security suggestions noted. Thanks for your expertese and patience helping me with my computer. It has been a pleasure and a learning experience. The computer is working much better. I think I got it before any serious breach happened but I have noted that we can never feel completely secure until we reformat the computer. We will probably do that pretty soon after moving stuff to an external hard drive.

Keep up the good work. If I have problems again, I will visit malwareremoval.com and try to look you up.

Thanks and have a great life.
