Unread postby askey127 » March 31st, 2010, 7:42 pm

Tisch28,
------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: If you ever needed to restore your registry later, you would go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Copy/Paste/Run a Registry Edit
Copy/paste the following contents of the code box into a new notepad document:
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\YVIBBBHA8C]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
itzedbdi.dll=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe"=-
"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgupd.exe"=-
"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exe"=-
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\a.exe"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{f2ca5cd8-c3a6-11dc-ad78-0018de40d2fb}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save it as File Type All Files (not as a Text document, or it won't work).
Save it to your Desktop as fixme.reg
Double click fixme.reg on your Desktop, and merge it into the registry when asked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot (restart)Windows.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight the listed file only, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.
C:\Windows\System32\a.exe
If you have any problem deleting the file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete or find.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to each folder shown below, highlight each one in turn shown in red, if found, and press Delete.
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\ <== this folder only
C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\ <== this folder only
You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.

Let me know if you are still getting redirects.

Hello askey, my wonderful helper!

Right, here's my progress:
erunt - done
fixme - done

when I tried to delete the files you mentioned, I did AVG8 and bittorrent no problem but the a.exe file was not in there so I couldn't delete it.

My browser redirect problem appeared to be solved - I clicked 30 links on google and all of them did as they should. However, literally as I was typing this, firefox opened up a new window with a redirect to a weird search site. I have an add on to firefox - No Script - which blocked the page from opening but it was there.

I shall await further instructions, but should warn you that I am going away today to a friends house for a few days for Easter. I will take my laptop and try to connect from her house in order to continue the clean up but if I get there and can't I wanted to warn you I may be gone for a few days! I will be back late Saturday night (BST) but hopefully I'll be online from her house sooner.

Thanks again for sticking with me and helping, I think you're wonderful :)

ah, spoke too soon, Google links are now redirecting again to random sites (all of which are blocked by my no script add on)

sorry to be the bearer of frustrating news...

tisch28,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix.
Something like this should work:
DISABLE AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon in the task bar.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, DESELECT the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in (or turn the wireless off and then on).

(So you know what to expect after this Recovery Console is installed, your computer will now show a brief command menu window for 2 seconds at each bootup. This is a safeguard, allowing a technical person access to a special command console if the machine doesn't boot correctly. Trying to save machines from rootkit infections is a somewhat risky business).

Please reply with the contents of Combofix.txt log.

Hi Askey, great news, I've been able to access the internet at my friend's house so I'm still here!

I ran the Combofix as requested. It did the scan and auto-rebooted itself a few times. It also said it had identified rootkit activity?

tisch,
------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
Go to the ERUNT folder on your desktop and run it again to create another registry backup.
Note: If you ever needed to restore your registry later, you would go to the backup folder (C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT) and start ERDNT.exe
-------------------------------------------------------------
  • Open a new Notepad window (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad). Choose File, New.
  • Highlight the contents of the codebox below and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
    Code: Select all
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
    "DisableNotifications"=0

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Alcmtr]

    [HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
    "DisallowRun"=-

    [-HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\disallowrun]

  • Paste the contents of the clipboard into the Notepad window by pressing Ctrl+V or Edit, Paste
  • Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

    Image
  • Now drag and drop the CFScript.txt icon onto combofix.exe as in the picture above, and follow the prompts.
  • Then post the resultant log, C:\ComboFix.txt, in your next reply.

--------------------------------------------
TDSSKiller
  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop
  • Extract the file tdskiller.zip, it will create a folder named tdsskiller on your desktop
  • Double-click the tdsskiller Folder on your desktop.
  • Right-click on tdsskiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Highlight and copy (Ctrl+C) the text in the codebox below.
    Code: Select all
    "%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.exe" -l "%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.txt"
  • Click Start, click Run... and paste (Ctrl+V) the text above into the Open: line and click OK.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • Open tdskiller.txt on your desktop and post the contents in your next reply
--------------------------------------------
Please read the instructions below and follow them in the exact sequence described. (It's easy):
  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Do NOT post the log yet, but allow mbam to reboot.
  • After reboot, immediately rescan with malwarebytes, let it perform another scan, select to remove all items and reboot once again.
  • It's important that these steps are performed immediately after each other (scan > select to remove > reboot > immediately another scan > select to remove > reboot).
Then when done, post the LATEST malwarebytes log in your next reply. Only post that log AFTER the second reboot.

So we are looking for the Combofix log, the log from TDSSkiller, and the latest Malwarebytes log.
Separate posts are fine.

tisch,
If you are still getting redirects, it must have to do with some Foxfire chosen preferences that are connecting to spyware sites. (You probably could tell from the Combofix logs that you should avoid Diner Dash).
Your machine looks clean as far as infected files.
Regardless, you can now run the TO DO list we discussed earlier whenever you wish.
Let me know how it goes.

Hello Askey,

That's great news, the browser redirects seem to have stopped for today I haven't had any at all - horray!

Okay, I've worked through the To do list and done these:

- set CCleaner's options to remove all cookies
- used HostsXpert
- set up a new guest account and changed my password to keep young fingers out!
- reset my system restore point and cleaned the old ones out
- installed WinPatrol
- checked my security centre settings are correct
- installed an additional firewall from one of the recommended sources
- changed passwords to my online banking and other accounts

Should I remove any of the programs we installed to my desktop, or should I keep them?

Since it seems like we're pretty close to finished here I wanted to take the opportunity to say I think you're wonderful and what you do is amazing. People who give up their precious free time to help others are like gold dust and I appreciate your help and this website so much. It's really upsetting when something goes very wrong with your computer, especially with so much of emotional value held on the machine - it feels like a personal attack when a virus hits you. I don't know what I would have done without your support, probably had to save the money up to eventually replace my machine, so I can't express how grateful I am. Is there any way I can make a donation to a charity of your choice as a way of thanking you? I would really like to do that.

Thanks again, you are brilliant x

Tisch28,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Rename xxx.exe back to Combofix.exe on your desktop.
Click START then RUN
Type Combofix /uninstall in the Runbox and click OK. Note the space between Combofix and /uninstall
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
You can remove any other tools we used that are still present.
I would keep Malwarebytes -Anti-malware, and even pay for the lifetime fee.
Good luck.
