My computer is crashing and I can't view my event log.

This has become a frequent problem ( crashing ) I am currently trying to delete duplicate pictures from a folder on my desktop and after deleting 3 - 4 pictures my laptop crashes. I have to turn the laptop back on and there is not a failure message, it just starts up like nothing happenned. I went to Event View to see if I could diagnose my problem and received an error message stating the Event View service is not running. I currently run AVG free version and it tells me I am uninfected but I strongly suspect otherwise. I surf the web and check out some of the webs more "interesting" locations and think I picked something nasty up! Please, any help will be greatly appreciated!
