After Removing Trojan.Fraudpack and Rogue AdwareAlert

Unread postby hartsarts » March 29th, 2010, 2:32 am

Win XP Service Pack 3 PC was running AVG Free. The infection was through one user account of IE. It generated fake spyware attack alerts and tried to redirect IE to a "protectguru" site. It infected the second user account (both with admin privileges). Other computers networked through firewalled modem were not affected. We used Malwarebyte's AM and Kaspersky to find and delete infected files, ran CCleaner and finally used Hijack This to fix the RO and RI problems. We are unsure what to do about the rest. We are now able to use the second, but the first account still seems to be malfunctioning. Here are the logs as requested. Thank you for your help. - Bill

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

My handle is shinybeast and I will be assisting you in the removal of malware your computer may have.

Please follow these guidelines as we work to clean your computer.
  • Read through the instructions before you perform them and if you have questions please ask before you perform them. Please do not guess. I will be happy to clarify or explain.
  • Perform all instructions in the order given.
  • Stick with the process until I give you an "all clean." If the symptoms are gone, it does not necessarily mean your computer is safe and secure.
  • Do not run any other tools to remove malware while we are working.
  • If your security software throws up warnings about some of these tools, please allow these tools to run.
  • If you have not done so, please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules and How to get help at this forum where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before we start.

Scan with RSIT

  • Click here to download Random's System Information Tool by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click RSIT.exe to run the tool
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open...
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next post.

Scan with GMER

Click here to download GMER Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

  • Disconnect your computer from the internet and disable all security software before starting the scan.
A guide to do this can be found here. If you still aren't sure how to disable protection software, please ask.
  • Double click the randomly named GMER file. If asked to allow gmer to run, please allow it.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following boxes:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All
  • Then click the Scan button and wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the Save.. button at lower right, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" (include the quotes or it will save as a .log file)
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while GMER is running.

Please reply with RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt), GMER log (ark.txt) and a description of how first account is "malfunctioning."

Thank you for your instructions, Shinybeast.

First, the malfunction of the infected user account:

No browser (IE and Google Chrome) or media player (Real, Quicktime) is able to connect to their homepage or user homepage. Internet Explorer generates the message "cannot display the webpage" and WIN XP Network Diagnostics says "Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21). Google Chrome displays the error message "This website is not available." Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): Unknown error. However, Outlook Express is working fine, downloading messages.

Then the RSIT logs and GMER log:

Hello hartsarts,

Well, there doesn't appear to be active malware.

Let's get a better look at your security setup.

Security Application Check

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe by screen317 to your Desktop from one of the links below.
Link 1 | Link 2
  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe to start the program
  • If new window opens asking if you want to run the program, click Run
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please copy all text in checkup.txt and paste that text in your next reply.

Hello hartsarts,

Log into account that browser does not work in, then do the following:

Reset Windows Firewall to default

Click Start, click Run..., type firewall.cpl and press Enter.
Windows Firewall window should open.
  • Click Advanced tab
  • Under Default Settings, click Restore Defaults button
  • Then click General tab
  • Select (tick) Off (not recommended) and click OK

Next

Click Start, click Run..., type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
Internet Properties should open.
  • Click Connections tab
  • Click LAN settings button to open the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window.
  • Under Proxy server ensure that Use a proxy server for your LAN... is unchecked.
  • Click OK.
  • Then click OK in the Internet Properties window.

Test the browser in the malfunctioning account and report back with results.

If it still does not work, post a new RSIT log generated in the malfunctioning account.
You can access the log from the working account by finding log.txt in C:\rsit folder or click Start, click Run..., type C:\rsit\log.txt and press Enter.

That did it, Shinybeast! Thank you so much. I am writing from the previously infected account. IE, Google Chrome, Realplayer and Quicktime are all connecting to internet sites. No other problem is immediately apparent.

Questions: Should we leave the Windows Firewall turned off if we switch from Kaspersky to AVG? Do you have any personal recommendations for malware protection other than what is on the MR site? We have a cable internet connection through a firewalled Linksys router.

Enjoy your Easter if you are celebrating. Thank you, again, for working into the weekend with us.

Hi Bill,

Happy Easter to you. Glad to hear the connection issue is solved. :)

Questions: Should we leave the Windows Firewall turned off if we switch from Kaspersky to AVG? Do you have any personal recommendations for malware protection other than what is on the MR site? We have a cable internet connection through a firewalled Linksys router.

I am pretty sure Kaspersky Internet Security runs with Windows Firewall turned off as it functions as a firewall in addition to an anti-virus, but I will check to be certain. If you were to switch to just an anti-virus with no firewall then you would definitely want to turn Windows Firewall on. Also, your router's firewall does add another layer of protection.

If you have paid for Kaspersky, I recommend you keep using it. No security software is perfect and Kaspersky probably kept things from getting really bad. Switching from Kaspersky to AVG would be a degradation of your computer's security and I do not recommend doing that. I will have some further recommendations when we finish up.

Let's update some vulnerable software.

Your Java and Adobe Reader are out of date. You should update them both as older versions have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malware.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start, click Run...
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Add or Remove Programs
For each of the programs listed below, highlight them in the list and click Remove

Adobe Reader 8.1.3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Once finished, close Add or Remove Programs window

Update Java

Download and install newest version:

  • Click here to visit Sun Java download page
  • Under Java Platform, Standard Edition, click then red Download JRE button
  • Select your platform and agree to the license agreement (after having read it, of course) by clicking the checkbox. Click Continue.
  • Click the link (jre-6u19-windows-i586-p.exe) under Available Files and download the offline installer to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running, including web browsers.
  • From your desktop, double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Reboot your computer.

Adobe Reader

  • Click Here to download the installer for Adobe Reader and save AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to a convenient location.
  • Double-click AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe and follow the prompts to install Adobe Reader 9.3

Then start Adobe Reader.
  • Click Help then click Check for Updates...
  • Once Adobe Updater opens, click Show Details
  • Place a check next to Adobe Reader 9.3.1 (Leave Language Support unchecked if you do not need additional language support.)
  • Then click Download and Install Updates button at bottom right.
  • Once finished, close Adobe Reader.

Let's delete some temp files and run a full scan with an updated MalwareBytes' to check for anything that might have been missed.

CCleaner

Close all running programs and browsers.
Start CCleaner
Click Cleaner on the left, then click Run Cleaner button.
Once it is finished, close CCleaner

Update and Scan with MalwareBytes'

  • Start MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
  • Click the Update tab, then click Check for Updates button
  • Allow MBAM to check for and download updates, then click OK
  • Click the Scanner tab and select (tick) Perform full scan
  • Click Scan to start then scan.
  • When it finishes, click OK in the window that pops up and then click Show Results in the main window
  • Check all items EXCEPT items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  • When the removal is complete, a logfile will open. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the logfile in your next reply. See NOTE below
  • If necessary, the logfile can also be accessed by running Malwarebytes' and clicking the Log tab. Double-click the current log to open it.
NOTE: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let it proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

Please post the MalwareBytes' log and a new RSIT log (log.txt) generated in the account that was having problems for a final check. If needed, you can get RSIT from here.

Re: After Removing Trojan.Fraudpack and Rogue AdwareAlert

Unread postby shinybeast » April 5th, 2010, 11:23 am

Hello hartsarts,

Kaspersky Internet Security does indeed like to turn off Windows Firewall to avoid conflicts.

Please log into account that was having issues connecting. The line I am having you fix below is what was preventing the browsers from working. It is not malware but a setting the malware used. You likely fixed something similar in the other account.

HijackThis

  • Start HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.
  • Place a check next to the lines listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

  • After placing a check next to the above lines, close all windows except for HijackThis.
  • Click Fix checked, then click Yes to confirm.
  • Close HijackThis, then reboot the computer.

Your logs are clean. :)

Create a new System Restore point and clear old ones

Please clear old restore points in order to avoid reintroducing malware from a restore point in the future.

Create a new restore point
  • Navigate to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore
  • On the right side of the welcome window, select (tick) Create a restore point, then click Next
  • Under Restore point description, name the restore point (I suggest post-malware removal or something similar)
  • Click Create, then click Close

Delete old restore points
  • Click Start, click Run..., type cleanmgr and press Enter
  • Select the drive XP is installed on (usually C: ) and click OK
  • Once the Disk Cleanup dialog opens, click the More Options tab
  • Under System Restore click Clean up...
  • You will be asked if you are sure you want to clean all restore points but the most recent one, click Yes
  • Close the Disk Cleanup dialog to finish.
Note: Do the above once. Restore points should not be routinely deleted.

Please delete RSIT, the randomly named GMER file, and SecurityCheck if they are still present.

Recommendations

Implementing the following suggestions will greatly reduce your chances of malware problems in the future.

Update Windows

It is important to keep Windows and Microsoft programs updated to close vulnerabilities as they are discovered.

I suggest that you occasionally visit Microsoft Update and install all important updates. Please visit Microsoft Update as soon as possible as described below.

Close all windows and temporarily disable your anti-virus (usually through a tray icon)

Use Internet Explorer to visit this site: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-US

Once the page loads follow instructions to install all critical updates. You may need to repeat this process until fully updated.

Keep installed programs up to date

Anti-virus
Most important is keeping your anti-virus software up to date. An out of date anti-virus is not much better than no anti-virus. If your anti-virus is not set to update automatically (preferred), it is imperative that you occasionally update it manually. You usually can accomplish this through a tray icon.

Update Other Vulnerable Software
Malware writers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in commonly used applications. There are several online sites which will scan your computer for outdated software. I've listed two below. I recommend occasionally visiting and scanning your computer to detect vulnerable software that should be updated.
Secunia Online Software Inspector
F-Secure Health Check

Mozilla Firefox Plug-in Check
If using Firefox, Click here to visit Mozilla, check your plug-ins and update them as necessary.

Best Practices for Email and Downloaded Files.

  • Do not read emails from unknown sources.
  • Make it a habit to never open email attachments from anyone, including people you know, unless you absolutely have to. If you need to open an attachment, scan it with your anti-virus before you open it.
  • Do not use Peer to Peer software to "share" media and software. You will get more than you expected and the "bonus" will not be something you want and will bring you back seeking help.
  • Do not use keygens or hacked software. First, it is stealing. Second, it is almost always infected with something. If you cannot afford to buy something, there is likely a free alternative that will be a good substitute. Search around and seek out advice from a trusted forum. Most will be glad to tell you of their favorite free program that performs the job you want done.

Additional Protection Programs

The programs listed below are excellent for improving your computer's security.

WinPatrol by Bill Pytlovany - "WinPatrol is a multi-purpose utility designed to increase performance and protect against unwanted changes." Information on it's many features can be found here

MVPS Hosts file - A replacement HOSTS file that redirects known malicious and ad serving sites to the localhost, thus preventing connection to them.
Note: MVPS Hosts file can sometimes slow down the computer so read the information on the site to mitigate this effect.

I encourage you to check out miekiemoes' article "How to prevent Malware:"

If you have any questions about these suggestions, I would be happy to answer them.

Regards,
shinybeast

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
