Unread postby codediamond » March 17th, 2010, 7:42 pm

Hi and welcome, sorry for the delay the forum is really busy.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read Back up your files

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.

Re: Vista defender says I have a virus.

Unread postby Cypher » March 22nd, 2010, 3:28 pm

Hi codediamond.
Thank you so much for your help

Your most welcome.

Vista Advice:
  • All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
  • The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
  • When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    LimeWire 5.1.2
    Vuze

  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
  • Click on Start > All programs > Accessories > Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next.

multiple Anti Virus programs

  • It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
    avast! Antivirus
    Norton 360
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.
  • Please remove one of them.

Next.

Please post a new Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Next.

Run CKScanner

  • Please download CKScanner from Here
  • Important: - Save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click CKScanner.exe > select " Run as administrator " then click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • Uninstall list.
  • CKFiles.txt log.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

I see that HJT shows I have Norton 360 installed on my computer. But its not in my uninstall list and I dont know how to remove it. I dont even know how it got there because I never installed it? You asked for a performance update so I decided to try and boot windows normally instead of safe mode and it worked this time. Its not giving me popups saying my computer is infected anymore. Windows explorer crashed again, but that is normal. For some reason it has always crashed. I dont understand why, but it seems to be running ok now?

Hi codediamond.
Don't worry about Norton if it's active on your system we can remove it.
Please delete the CKFiles.txt file on you desktop.
Then follow my instructions for running the CKScanner again and post the new log in your next reply.

Thank you.

Hi codediamond.
Thank you for those logs.
Lets get a few scans done to check things out, please continue with the instructions below.

I see you have CCleaner installed, please run it now.
CAUTION: Please do NOT use the "Registry" button in the left pane.
This is a built-in registry cleaner. Removing certain entries can render your computer inoperable!

Next.

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

  • Right-click on Rkill And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • When finished, Notepad will open with a log called, "rkill.log".
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log in your next reply.
  • The file is automatically saved... located at C:\rkill.log.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Next.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Right-click the Random named-setup.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it. then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Next.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  • The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
  • The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • rkill.log.
  • Malwarebytes log.
  • RSIT log.txt file contents and info.txt file contents.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

When right click Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware it pops up with a error code: 707 (3,0) I have tried deleting the program and re-installing but it pops up with the same error code. Im not sure if I should move on to the next step without running malwarebytes or not.

Hi codediamond.

BACKDOOR TROJAN/KEYLOGGER

I'm afraid I have some bad news for you :( . Your computer is infected with Keylogger and a BACKDOOR TROJAN. Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victims machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer, change settings on the computer and more. Please read this article by Roger A. Grimes on Remote Access Trojans it will give you an Idea of the severity of the type of infection you have.

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it

Because of the severity and the capabilities of this type of virus, (it cannot be known what changes to your system it has made or if it opened up other ways into your system) The only responsible course of action I can advise is to reformat your computer and reinstall windows.

Just a quick question. I was looking at the malwarebytes log and it says that the only files infected were the ones associated with the key logger. I used to have a program on my computer called Adaramax keylogger, that I had put on here because my employees were using this computer for fun and not for work. needless to say I caught them and uninstalled the program. This was about a year ago and haven't had any problems since I started getting random popups from vista defender saying I had a virus. Are you sure its a trojan or just the keylogger? The reason I ask is because I do not have a copy of windows and read on microsoft.com that after I buy one it would be sent in two weeks. I have to use my computer daily for my business, and have to send daily files. I cant just stop using it for two weeks. Are you sure it is absolutely necessary to reformat?
