I think I have a Trojan - Please Help

Unread postby SilentCreatures » March 29th, 2010, 11:59 am

I have run the Hijack tool and the log is as below.

I was on my msn messenger when someone gave me a link - I clicked on it and my norton antivirus warned me something bad had happened. (sorry I can't recall) I looked in the log and it said the following

Risk Name: Trojan Horse
Category: Virus
Type: File Based
Severity: High
Risk State: Fully Removed

However my msn keeps opening and closing a window when it is on. I also have a new file Called Tracing.

Also my home page keeps changing to http://postarticle.net and I can't change it.

I am concerned that I still have the Trojan Horse

The Hijack Log is Below

Re: I think I have a Trojan - Please Help

Unread postby Wingman » April 4th, 2010, 10:25 am

Hello SilentCreatures... Welcome to the forum.

I apologize for the delay getting to your log but as you can see the forum is very busy.

My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
The logs I request can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  3. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  4. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  5. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  6. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.
Vista - Windows 7 Users - Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be installed and run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the installation file and the executable program file & selecting: Run as Administrator. Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program. When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click erunt-setup-exe, select "Run As Administrator" to run the install process. Install by following prompts.
  3. Use the default install settings...
  4. Make sure the first two check boxes -> (Create ERUNT and NTREGOPT desktop icons) are checked.
Say "NO" if prompted or asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this later.
  5. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
VISTA/W7 users: right-click the desktop icon, select "Run As Administrator" or start it at the end of the setup process.
  6. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is fine.
  7. Click on OK ... then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
Vista/W7 users: right-click on ERUNT in the menu, then select "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompts, please allow it.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
VISTA users: Right-click on mbam-setup.exe, select "Run As Administrator" to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <<---Important!
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  4. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  3. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 3.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
These log files can be found in the C:\RSIT folder
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan results.
  3. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi Wingman,

Thank you for your reply - I understand that things can get busy here, thank you for taking time to help me.

I need to apologise - right after posting here a friend suggested to download Malwarebytes and run it. I have done this but nothing further. I will post the log below. Since doing this I no longer send the virus on to other users on MSN. I think it was called something like image[1].exe and my homepage is also back to normal.

Hello SilentCreatures,

I understand your desire to get your computer secure and it's a good thing to do... but I must ask that you not make any more changes to your system, unless specifically requested by me. I'm glad you were able to get some functionality back and your computer is no longer sending this infection to others.

Yes, please be so kind as to run the RSIT step, so I can take a deeper look into your system, to see if anything else remains.

I would hold off on "regular" computer use until we have made sure you are clean.

Thanks,
Wingman

The subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The logon type field indicates the kind of logon that occurred. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The New Logon fields indicate the account for whom the new logon was created, i.e. the account that was logged on.

The network fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Logon GUID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate this event with a KDC event.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.

Re: I think I have a Trojan - Please Help

Unread postby Wingman » April 5th, 2010, 1:09 pm

Hello SilentCreatures
Your RSIT log looks pretty good. I need to ask you if you set a proxy server override for accessing the Internet?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :
If yes, and you need to keep it ... DO NOT check the HijackThis entry in the step below.

Step ?.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Please run this again, as changes may have occurred between the last run and now. Better to be safe than to be sorry.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT... double-click ERUNT from the menu.
VISTA - W7 users: right-click on ERUNT from the menu, select "Run As Administrator", to run the process.

Step 2.
Fix HijackThis entries
Important!
Please temporarily disable any anti-spyware programs you are using, listed Here
...so they will not interfere with the entries we will be fixing in HijackThis.
  1. Run HijackThis
Vista - W7 users: Right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
    • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  2. When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present):
*Only check those items listed below*
      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = : <<--- check only if not needed!
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

You can OPTIONALLY check these program entries. They automatically run at startup more for convenience than necessity and are available elsewhere, i.e. Start -> Programs. If you "fix" with HJT, you'll save resources, possibly improve performance. Your choice.
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
  3. After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis
  4. Click the Fix Checked...button. Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.
  5. Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.

Step 3.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button. <<---Important!
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Step 4.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Vista - W7 users: You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted... then double click on it to install.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
    • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 5.
Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced.<<will be maximized
  3. Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 6.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM Full scan results.
  3. ESET scan results.
  4. RSIT log.txt file contents.
  5. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,

Hi Wingman,

Please don't laugh but.. I don't understand the first part.

I need to ask you if you set a proxy server override for accessing the Internet?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :

How do I find this out? I know that I had to install a programme from my internet provider is this what you mean?

If you can help explain this for me I will get onto doing all the rest.

Hello SilentCreatures
Not a problem... I'd rather have you ask about something before, rather than after. :)
A proxy server acts as a security barrier between your internal network and the Internet, keeping others on the Internet from being able to obtain access to information that is located on your internal network.
We'll leave the entry for now....

Please perform the following steps... I removed the entry from those included before....
Step 1.

Re: I think I have a Trojan - Please Help

Unread postby Wingman » April 7th, 2010, 11:19 am

Hello SilentCreatures

Your logs looked good, no signs of malware present. Let's get some other entries cleaned up.
I see you have a couple programs that are out of date and pose a security risks when these programs are out of date.

Step 1.

Step 2.
OTM
  1. Please download OTM.exe...by Old Timer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Right click on OTM.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If Windows UAC prompts, please allow it.
  3. Please copy and paste the text in the Code box below, into OTM (1).
Please refer to the OTM screen image below, for reference.
Warning: Do not type it out... errors could damage your machine.
    Code: Select all
    :Processes
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{38d2176d-24d5-11de-b229-00247e195cb2}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{afd5963f-72a8-11de-b240-00247e195cb2}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{e3b1f71a-2766-11de-85ae-00247e195cb2}]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]

Please refer to this image to use OTM.

    Image
  4. Click on MoveIt! (2)
  5. The end results of the processing will be in 2 places:
    • The Results window on the right side of the OTM screen.
    • A log (text) file created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
  6. Copy all the text from the Results window... Open Notepad, paste the OTM results into the Notepad file, save it on your desktop.
  7. Click Exit (3) when done.
  8. Please paste the entire content from the OTM (Results) window (Notepad file) or the OTM log file, in your next reply.
NOTE: If your computer did not automatically reboot... please reboot it (normally) now!
Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTM is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders and is intended by the developer to be used under the guidance and supervision of a trained malware removal expert.

Step 3.
Update Adobe Reader
Your version of (9) Adobe Reader is out-of-date. There are serious security issues with older versions of Adobe Reader.
I'm not asking you to update the Adobe Acrobat installation... this can be quite costly. I am going to insist that you update your Adobe Reader software.
Then use the Reader for viewing PDF files... you can use the Acrobat software for your other needs.

Please download the current version of Adobe Reader...Copyright © Adobe Systems Inc.
Please UNCHECK the box for the: Free McAfee Security Scan.
  1. Click the yellow "Download now"... button. If you don't already have Adobe DLM... you may receive a prompt...
  2. If prompted to install "Adobe DLM" This software is not a requirement to obtain the latest Adobe Reader software...so the choice is yours.
The Adobe (DLM) Download Manager... allows you to "pick up where you left off", if your download process is interrupted. A good idea if you are using dial-up.
If you choose to install Adobe DLM, it will start the download automatically. Adobe DLM software removal instructions available here...if wanted.
  3. If not using Adobe DLM...click on the highlighted "click here to download" text, to begin the Reader download.
Save the file to your desktop.
    Uninstall OLD Adobe Reader
  4. Click on Start...then... Click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  5. Copy and paste control appwiz.cpl into the open text entry box.
Depending on your current view setting ...
    • Double click on Programs and Features.
    • Under Programs, click on Uninstall a program.
  6. Locate the following program(s):
    Adobe Reader 9

  7. Select the program and click on Uninstall to uninstall it.
  8. Repeat steps 3 - 4 for each program in the list. When finished... Close the Control Panel window.
    Install NEW Adobe Reader
  9. Click on the Adobe Acrobat Reader (AdbeRdrxx_en_US.exe) icon, on your desktop... to install the new (free) version.
The Adobe Reader download file name will be different, depending on the language or OS chosen. xx in the name = version numbers.
  10. The Adobe installer will check your system and begin the installation process. Use the default installation parameters.
  11. When the installation is complete... Close and re-open your Internet browser.
An alternate to Adobe Reader, you could try the free (for personal use) Foxit-Reader. It's a smaller download and when installed, uses less resources than Adobe Reader. Note: Let me know if interested in Foxit-Reader and I will provide safe download and installation instructions.

Step 4.
Java Update Needed!
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components and update:

Attention: Print these instructions or copy them. You will be closing your browser!!

DOWNLOAD UPDATED VERSION
  1. Get the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)... © Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  2. Look for "JDK 6 Update 19 (JDK or JRE)"
  3. Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  4. Select your Platform: "Windows"... then check "I agree to the (current update version) License Agreement.".
  5. Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  6. Locate the entry for Windows Offline Installation and click on the file name, save the file to your desktop.
Dial-up users: You may want to check the "Windows Offline Installation" box and opt to use...
"Download Selected with Sun Download Manager". The download can be restarted, in case it's interrupted.
<STOP> Do not install the new version of Java yet. We need to do some cleanup first!

REMOVE OLD JAVA VERSIONS
  1. Click on Start...then... Click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Copy and paste control appwiz.cpl into the open text entry box.
Depending on your current view setting ...
    • Double click on Programs and Features.
    • Under Programs, click on Uninstall a program.
  3. Locate the following program(s):
    Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
  4. Select the program and click on Uninstall to uninstall it.
  5. Repeat steps 3 - 4 for each program in the list. When finished... Close the Control Panel window.
    Delete old Java Folder
    • Right click on the Start...button.
    • Using the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
    • Navigate to and find the following folder: if found, delete it.
It's possible it may have been removed by the uninstall steps
      C:\Program Files\Java\ <==== delete this entire folder
    • When finished, exit Search.

Hi Wingman,

have just done the OTM I could not do all the steps you asked

6.Copy all the text from the Results window... Open Notepad, paste the OTM results into the Notepad file, save it on your desktop.
7.Click Exit (3) when done.

I could not touch results window as system wanted to reboot. Is this an issue?

Hi Wingman,

No problems with Adobe - it has been updated.

I have encountered some trouble trying to uninstall the Java(TM) 6 Update 17

I have tried a couple of times and each time it seems like it reinstalls it at the same time.

It also will not let me delete the Java folder - it says I need permission to do so.

Also I notice that now all my hidden files are now visible

Otherwise everything is fine.

Thanks

Hello SilentCreatures

No problem posting the log from the OTM step. :) That's exactly what you should have done, if you could not access the results screen, good job!

OTM changes some settings, in order to access files... we can change these settings back to hide system files again.

Step 1.
Java...
If you were able to uninstall the Java Update 7... good... then for now, ignore the other uninstall (Update 17) and run the update portion of the Java instructions. Once the new version is installed, restart your computer and then see if the old version is still present. If so try to remove it using the Control Panel instructions. It doesn't harm anything if the old version is still present but it is preferred to only have the current version.

Step 2.
Hide hidden files in Windows Vista
Please disable the Show Hidden Files and Folders option:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Press Image.
  3. Click the Start Search box on the Start Menu
  4. Copy and paste the following value, in the open text entry box:
    control folders
Depending on you view settings: choose one of these options:
    • Double-click on the Folder Options icon... then click on the View tab.
    • Click on the Appearance and Personalization link... then click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
  5. UNSELECT... button Show hidden files and folders.
under the "Hidden files and folders" section.
  6. Place a check mark in check box... Hide protected operating system files.
  7. Press the Apply button...then the OK button.

Step 3.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. If so, just ignore the download instructions.
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.

Attention!
In order for both info and log files to be produced again, I need you to delete the existing RSIT folder:
  1. C:\RSIT <-- delete this entire folder , then...

  2. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  3. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 (Notepad) text files...will be produced.

  2. Java updated?
  3. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman
