Unread postby fanofdepp » March 6th, 2010, 12:24 pm

Recently I have had 2 occasions of a screen coming on saying I have Viruses. That my personal information/creditcard information/IPaddress is at risk. It then asks me to download something from a box that looks like it is from Windows that will fix the problem. I have not downloaded anything, but I dont know if my comp is infected or not? I am enclosing a copy of HighjackThis. Thank you ahead of time for your help.

Hi fanofdepp,
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://free.avg.com/ww.registration-appf8
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O23 - Service: Yahoo! Updater (YahooAUService) - Yahoo! Inc. - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\SoftwareUpdate\YahooAUService.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

fanofdepp,
--------------------------------------------------
Run Flash Disinfector
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task > Run... Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.

You can run Flash Disinfector with other flash drives and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix!!
If you don't know how to disable your antivirus, stop and ask.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

Something like this should work:
DISABLE AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon in the system tray down near the clock.
(It's the square multicolor icon. (looks like this:Image).
  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, UNselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
To re-enable AVG later, use the same sequence except select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

Unread postby askey127 » March 12th, 2010, 1:21 pm

Looks good, but it looks as if we didn't get it all last time.

A copy of the log is located directly in the top directory of the C:\ drive.
It's here : C:\Combofix.txt
Using My Computer double click C: drive and look at the list.
Double click Combofix.txt
When it comes up in Notepad, hit Ctrl+A to highlight the whole thing, then Ctrl+C to copy to the invisible Windows clipboard.
Then come back here and hit Post Reply, and hit Ctrl+V to Paste it in.

fanofdepp,
Looks fine, actually.
Please try your best to run this. I want to be sure.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan. Go take a snooze :D
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

fanofdepp,
Combofix did remove an item.
Just a couple more things to do for your Safety going forward.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 9.1
Java(TM) 6 Update 17

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

------------------------------------------------------------
Older versions of Java have been vulnerable to malware infections in the past. It is important to install the newest version and make sure all older ones have been removed.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
It is currently the 1st item on the page (the page changes often), called JDK 6 Update 18
The Item has two download buttons.
Click on the button labeled "Download JRE". Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK"
.
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Right Click zzz.exe on your desktop and choose Rename to change it back to Combofix.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Click START then RUN
Type Combofix /uninstall in the Runbox and click OK. Note the space between Combofix and /uninstall
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.

You are good to go. Good luck.

Thank you again for all your help Askey127. I did everything you said, the only glitch I had was when uninstalling Combofix. It started then made me disable my AVG, then I ran it again, saying it finished. Selecting a '2' was not an option. I dont see it in my start menu, so I assume I did it correctly.

I sincerely appreciate all of your assistance!

Kim,
You are most welcome.
Make sure you have deleted any file named Combofix.exe or zzz.exe from your desktop.
(Right-click the icon and choose Delete).

Also Make sure you go through the instruction I gave you about AVG, step by step,
EXCEPT this time CHECK "Enable Resident Shield".
This will be ensure that your antivirus is enabled.
