Hi Diane.
I have some bad news our only option is to either re-format and re-install your operating system, or try a repair install.
First question do you have your XP discs that came with your PC?

I was afraid of that ha. I can't find an xp disk. The users guide for our computer (a Compaq) says that it has a "recovery partition" on the computer. "No more hunting for lost cd's". This was my husband's computer so I am not sure what it actually came for.

Hi Diane.
The users guide for our computer (a Compaq) says that it has a "recovery partition" on the computer.
Please try this.
Turn on your PC and start tapping F11, this should enable to boot into the recovery partition.
For instructions on using the recovery partition see Here
Let me know how it goes.

Ok it might be a different setup on your pc.
Let me know if you can boot to safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

OK when you tried Last Known Good Configuration you were given these options.

1: D:\MiniNT
2: D:\I386
3: C:\WINDOWS

Please try 2: D:\I386 and let me know what happens.

Last Known Good Configuration

  • Turn the computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key (if this doesn't work try the F5 key).
  • When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

Hi Diane.
Can you tell me the make and model of your PC and i will see what i can find out.
The method for doing this differs depending on the maker of the PC so i can only go by the instructions i can find.
It may be that you will have to order recovery discs from HP in order to reformat.

It's a Compaq Presario. The hardware it is asking about is Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller. Before it was 3d graphic hardware, I clicked don't install on it.
