Hi and welcome, sorry for the delay the forum is really busy.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.
  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Re: MS Live OneCare Suddenly Not Functioning Properly

Unread postby briolette » March 6th, 2010, 6:58 pm

Good afternoon, Cypher. Thank you, very much, for coming to my rescue. I am not at all certain that my machine is, indeed, infected...however, it's suddenly just slogging along - taking much too long open & close browser windows, with graphics being particularly troublesome. I recently joined Facebook and have been spending a lot of time there. A couple of days ago, I just arbitrarily went through my Install/Uninstall Programs list in Control Panel and discovered a program there that I hadn't installed & couldn't identify. I uninstalled it w/o knowing that that would be a procedure you would use here. And, I am sorry but, unfortunately, I have no idea what that program was.

Regretfully, I cannot back up my system before we embark on this, because that happens to be the problem that set off alarms bells with me. I have been using MS Live OneCare for over two years now, which routinely backs up my system, but suddenly within the past couple of weeks, it cannot do so.

Please find the Uninstall List that you requested below. And, thank you, again, for all of your help.

Re: MS Live OneCare Suddenly Not Functioning Properly

Unread postby Cypher » March 7th, 2010, 8:42 am

Hi briolette.
Thank you, very much.

Your most welcome :)

Just incase your not aware Windows Live OneCare is being discontinued, you may need to find an alternative.

For Information on Live OneCare see Here

Lets check your system out please continue with the instructions below.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  • The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
  • The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Next.

Disable Winpatrol

  • Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol ( Scotty the dog ) in the sytem tray and choose exit programe.
  • Note: Dont forget to Re-inable it after the below scan.

Next.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • RSIT log.txt file contents and info.txt file contents.
  • Gmer.txt log.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

Good evening, Cypher. Well, what began as a, seemingly, simple request of running two scans turned into a rather scary proposition for me. The RSIT scan went quickly and smoothly enough earlier today. However, the GMER took the entire day to run, and once it completed, just a short time ago, I saved the log file, as instructed, to my desktop. Immediately afterwards, my machine totally froze. I couldn't even restart it using CNTL-ALT-DLT. That has never happened to me before. Once I was able to restart, I'd discovered that I'd lost both RSIT log files. Each of three subsequent attempts of rerunning RSIT only produced the one log.txt file and not the second info.txt that it originally had. Moreover, I believe that the GMER.txt file that I've posted below was originally much, much longer.

In sum, Cypher, methinks an entire day was completely lost. I am posting here and in a subsequent post what the day has wrought. I wanted you to know that I hadn't been negligent in following through on your requests, that I have attempted to do so, I've just run into some problems. I will gladly run both programs again, but I think it's prudent, at this point, to look to you for further guidance.

Re: MS Live OneCare Suddenly Not Functioning Properly

Unread postby Cypher » March 8th, 2010, 1:06 pm

Hi briolette.
Sorry you had trouble with the Gmer scan it can be problematic on some systems.
RSIT only produces the second log after it's first run, as you had to run it a second time there would be no second log produced.
I am not seeing any malware in your logs so far, please continue with the instructions below.

Registry Cleaners

Re. Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

I don't personally recommend the use of ANY registry cleaners. Here is an excerpt from a discussion on regcleaners
Most reg cleaners aren't bad as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems. The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit. If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference. If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

This post by Bill Castner is veryinformative: WhatTheTech Forum

Coupon Printer for Windows << Uninstall if you do not use via add/remove programs.

It is not bad as such BUT does like to collect data and send it home, so if not used it is always recommended to removed. If it is used then by all means keep it.

Re: MS Live OneCare Suddenly Not Functioning Properly

Unread postby briolette » March 8th, 2010, 6:29 pm

Hey, Cypher...thanks for the heads-up on Registry Cleaners. LOL A little bit of experience with them has taught me that they're ill-advised. Oh, and thank you, too, for the mention about OneCare. They actually notified me of its discontinuance, while at the same time granting me a 6-month extension free of charge - until 8/2010. "Free is good", for the time being, but I'm saddened by the fact that there may not be other virusware out there that performs double-duty like that. I may try Kaspersky next time, but preferably some software with a smaller footprint than MS.

Okay, to follow, my latest HJT log:

Hi briolette.
You could try DriveImage XML V2.13 for your backup needs it's free.
I can also recommend some free anti-virus applications if you wish.

The link for ATF Cleaner works for me try it again it may have been down temporarily.

If its still not working try this.

CCleaner

Please download CCleaner from Here and save it to your Desktop.
When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_
Follow the prompts to install the program.

Complete the installation.
  • Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
  • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
  • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
  • Go into Options > Advanced deselect/uncheck 'Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours'
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • CAUTION: Please do NOT use the "Registry" button in the left pane.
This is a built-in registry cleaner. Removing certain entries can render your computer inoperable!

Hi, Cypher. The ATF link worked today, and I successfully ran the program. Thank you, very much. I also just completed the ESet scan. The software did not produce a log file, as such - it did, however, post the 2 threats that I've included below.

I should indicate that I was unable to completely disable OneCare, just its firewall. True to form, MS has made it very difficult to find the mechanism to be able to do so. If current results are unsatisfactory, I will do further research to find out how to disable this virusware and run the ESet scan again. I will be happy to do so, please let me know.

In addition, my computer's performance hasn't changed. Aside from being sluggish, I am still unable to back up my system. During the backing up process, everything works perfectly until we get to the last step, where new files are to be saved to my auxiliary drive. I've checked Device Manager, and it appears that this "W" drive is in working order; therefore, I don't believe that the problem lies with this drive, I think it's a software issue.

Okay, Cypher, the 2 threats found by ESet are as follows:

C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe probably a variant of Win32/Agent trojan

Operating memory probably a variant of Win32/Agent trojan

Re: MS Live OneCare Suddenly Not Functioning Properly

Unread postby Cypher » March 9th, 2010, 2:42 pm

Hi briolette.
I do need to see the log from the online scan, lets try another scanner.

Im not sure what version of onecare you have, but one of these options should be right to disable the AV.

Open OneCare, click change settings, click on viruses and spyware tab, disable virus and spyware monitoring.

Or

Windows Live OneCare (Version 2)
(Disable Anti-virus component)

  1. Click on Start > All Programs > Windows Live OneCare.
  2. Under Quick links, click on "Change settings".
  3. Select the Viruses and Spyware tab.
  4. Under Virus and spyware monitoring, select "Off".
  5. Uncheck this box - "Also look for virus-like behavior".
  6. Click OK to apply the settings.
  7. Close OneCare.
*Important - Please *enable * Windows Live OneCare - Anti-virus component before posting logs.

Next.

:Kaspersky scan:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
        Archives
        Mail databases
    • Click on My Computer under Scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
    • Please post this log in your next reply.

Good evening, Cypher...just completed the Kaspersky scan and am posting the log below. If I may, I have a couple of questions that I'd like to put to you first, please.

I've been visiting Kaspersky's website for months now in order to avail myself of their free, malware scan, but as of approximately a week ago, they were still maintaining that this scan was unavailable & in the process of being updated. Is it available now, or have you been given access to a back door?

Also, I would be very interested in any freeware that you can recommend, either for virus protection and/or backing up my system. As well, I'd like to know if you would recommend permanently installing the ATF software for routine maintenance, along with any others that would aid in keeping my system nice and tight.

Thanks a million for all of your help thus far, and I'm on standby for the next phase...briolette
