HI,
thanks, as noted in my original post, the performance of my laptop has slowed markedly, and when using the internet under my own profile I am plagued by about:blank pop ups. I always click 'no', but it is very annoying. The strange thing is when my partner logs on under his profile there is no problem with the pop ups (although I think the performance is affected also).
Regards, look forward to hearing from you.

A couple of jobs to do and please update me on how things are running after doing the following.

Please delete the version of Combofix from your desk top and re download from the links provided earlier. Make sure you disable antivirus before running the following.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    c:\windows\IntIgn0xF28456.dat
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\DiagnosticScan.SYS
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\Start1Driver.SYS

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\XoftSpySE

    DDS::
    Trusted Zone: blank

    Driver::
    DiagnosticScan
    Start1Driver

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

You are using the BETA version of Hijack This. Please download the latest version from here

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

Hi,
sorry about missing this - so far so good, I've just had a quick browse around the net and no pop ups!!
Do you think this means we're all good to go now? The computer still seems a little sluggish but not too bad

A couple of jobs still to do. :)

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

Looks good! If you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and it associated folder C:\RSIT

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Image

The above procedure will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
