Okay...2 weeks ago my XP decided that it would intermittently decide not to turn on the screen on start-up, or that when in sleep it wouldn't rise with a screen. That may or may not be related to the current fiasco.
Yesterday I was attempting to download a file that a friend had put up on mega for me and suddenly I was besieged with pop-ups, most notably a ridiculous Palladin Antivirus one that initiated install without me, regardless of how many times I shut it down and closed it. Then I suddenly had youporn and other assorted lame porn sites icon'd on my deskstop. To add to the fun, my Norton went MIA, I went online to download AGV, no luck, PC wouldn't let me run it, ditto with Spy Doctor and McAfee, even when I got them downloaded, each attempt to run them shut down my PC or closed their programs.
Now my Task Manager is gone, security shield alerts that it's been lost, my PC now shuts itself down and restarts at whim, I've a ton of error messages and if I so much as try to go to an antivirus page or even google "trojan removal" I end up at whimsically stupid websites.
I've run Rkill numerous times and malware with the add on file that actually gets it to run - and it found a ton of stuff...but when it prompts to restart so that it can complete deletion of the trojans/etc, and I click Okay, my PC freezes up and it's not a normal shut-down. So I don't think it's actually getting rid of them. I ran Vundofix and it proclaimed my system clean (hahaha).
I've gotten the constant pop-up adds to disappear, no more porn icons and uninstalled and deleted Palladin several times...but the above mentioned problems with the system persist.
I greatly appreciate any help and guidance, with the caveat that I'm basically computer illiterate so please speak veeeery slowly.
Also, just for my sanity, what on earth is the "balloon" program thingie? I don't have balloons....thanks so much,
