My computer has been getting infected like crazy for the past few days and I have no idea why it is happening. I have scanned my computer with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware several times the past few days and it seems like as soon as I finish cleaning up whatever the scan finds more infections pop up. I also had an alert from my McAfee Security Center say that my computer was infected with Artemis!8937389568FE and in the Security Center under "Trusted Programs" Generic!Artemis was listed.

My computer is also making the sound you get whenever you get error messages (the Windows XP Critical Stop sound) at random times with no error windows or any type of alerts being shown.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hi and Welcome, Sorry for the delay the forum is really busy.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

  • If you haven't already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi JayCee82.
Submitted the same reply twice so I deleted the second one; Sorry about that.

No problem :)

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  • The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
  • The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Next.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • RSIT log.txt file contents and info.txt file contents.
  • Gmer.txt log.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

I'm having trouble running the GMER Rootkit Scanner. I followed all of your steps for running the scanner and I also diconnected my LAN line. The scan took almost 3.5 hours and when I tried to save the log file I was able to name it and click the save button but then nothing happened for more than 10 minutes. So I tried to click the save button again then I got a "not responding" or "no response" message in the title bar of the save window. Then I just closed the window. I'll try running it again though.

Hi JayCee82.
There is evidence that ComboFix has been used on your PC did you use it?
Don't worry about gmer for now just continue with the instructions below.
Please tell me if you set this proxy.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

Fix HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis

  • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  • When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
  • Note: Only check those items listed below.
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: porevujo.dll fojawuka.dll

  • After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  • Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.

    Next.

    Back Up registry with ERUNT

    • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it on to your desktop. HERE
    • Click on the erunt-setup.exe
    • Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
    • Choose language
    • A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO

      Image
    • Backup your registry to the default location

Note: To restore your registry (if needed), go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

    Next.

    Download and run OTM

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the Image area. Do not include the word Code.
      Code: Select all
      :Processes
      :Reg
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
      "AppInit_DLLS"
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
      "Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

      :Files
      C:\WINDOWS\tasks\jsttdwgs.job
      C:\WINDOWS\tasks\xfxhmpik.job

      :Commands
      [emptytemp]
      [start explorer]
      [Reboot]

      • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
      • Push the large Image button.
      • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
      • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

      Next.

      Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
      • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
      • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
      • RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
      • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

      • OTM log.
      • RSIT log.txt.
      • Please answer my questions about ComboFix and the proxy.
      • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

Hi Cypher.
To answer your questions, I've used ComboFix before for a previous problem that this forum helped me fix. I don't even know what a proxy is let alone how to set one. If I did set it I have no clue why I would or how I set it. And my computer seems to be running okay, however, I am still hearing the Windows XP Critical Stop sound at random times with no error windows or any type of alerts being shown.

Also I was a little confused with your instructions for using Old Timer so I haven't done anything else after downloading OTM. I figured it'd be safer to get some clarification first.

I understood pasting the code (with the word "code" not included) under the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved area. However, the next step after that is what confused me.
■Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

I don't see anything on OTM that specifically says Paste List of Files/folders to Move, should I be seeing one? Is the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window simply the window under the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved bar--the same place where I pasted the code from the previous step? Am I suppose to paste the code twice? Sorry for the confusion. :?

Hi JayCee82.
You did the right thing if your not sure about something it's best to ask first :)
I've used ComboFix before for a previous problem that this forum helped me fix.

Thats fine it's not a good idea to use ComboFix unless your trained to do so.
I don't even know what a proxy is let alone how to set one.

No problem we can deal with that later.
I don't see anything on OTM that specifically says Paste List of Files/folders to Move
You will see a yellow banner that says " Paste instructions for items to be moved ".
Simply past everything in the code box Once into the blank box below that, then carry on with the rest of the instructions.

This might be a bit clearer :)

  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Right-click and copy the following Script, Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Processes
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
    "AppInit_DLLS"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    "Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\tasks\jsttdwgs.job
    C:\WINDOWS\tasks\xfxhmpik.job

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right-click and paste the Script into the blank box below where it says, Image

Okay, so I followed your instructions for running OTM three times and nothing happened. I pasted the code in the blank box under Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved and then clicked the MoveIt! button. Immediately after I clicked the button the first 4 lines of the code disappered
:Processes
:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLS"

and the following appears in the Results window:
All process killed
========== PROCESSES ==========
========== REGISTRY ==========

Also as that happens all of my desktop icons disapper along with the task bar. Since I don't know what is suppose to happen while OTM is running I just let my computer sit for about 45 minutes, but nothing happens--no asking to reboot the machine or anything--and when I click on the title bar of OTM I get the (Not Responding) message in the title bar of the window. After that I restarted my computer then looked in the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder. There are folders within that folder but they are empty.

Should I let OTM run longer or what? I followed your instructions from the previous post verbatim and what I described above is all that is happening. :(

Hi JayCee82.
Ok lets try this.

Please be sure you Have backed up your registry with ERUNT first.

Next.

We need to disable McAfee Security Center and its components temporarily as it may be interfering with the fix.
Note: Please disconnect from the Internet when your security softwares are disabled or not active.
  • Open McAfee Security Center.
  • Click on Home on the left pane.
  • Beside Computer & Files, click on the arrow button.
  • Next, click on the arrow button beside Configure at the middle right (NOT the bottom one).
  • You will come to a new page. Please check (click) Off for all the protections. Remember to scroll down.
  • You will be prompted, select Never and just click OK.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Here is an illustration to assist you:
Image

Next.

  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Right-click and copy the following Script, Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
    "AppInit_DLLS"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    "Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\tasks\jsttdwgs.job
    C:\WINDOWS\tasks\xfxhmpik.job

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right-click and paste the Script into the blank box below where it says, Image

Then continue with the rest of the instructions in my previous post for running RSIT.

Hi again, Cypher.
I had previously backed up my registry with ERUNT as per your instructions from your post on Sat 20 Feb, 2010 at 2:44 pm.

I disabled McAfee Security Center following the animated GIF and disconnected from the Internet before doing so. I then opened OTM and pasted the new code under Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved and clicked the MoveIt! button.

This time the first 3 lines of the code disappered
:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLS"

and the following appeared in the Results window
All process killed
========== PROCESSES ==========

And just like before all of my desktop icons disappered along with the task bar. And when I clicked just on the title bar of the OTM window I got the (Not Responding) message in the title bar again. I restarted my computer again and looked in the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder and again another empty folder is created within the Moved Files folder.

Should I be waiting longer (more than 30 minutes) for OTM to run or does whatever OTM is suppose to do happen fairly promptly? :?
