Problems after removing Win32.Banker.fgv

Unread postby Frehley » February 10th, 2010, 5:04 pm

My computer concerns me since I have seemingly removed Win32.Banker.fgv. What concerns me the most is how often the blinking light that suggesting hard drive access is flashing.

Here are the results of my today's scan. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Problems after removing Win32.Banker.fgv

Unread postby askey127 » February 15th, 2010, 7:45 am

Frehley,

Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please read on:

If your computer is used for any sensitive information whatever, you should assume the information has been stolen.
That includes credit or debit card info, bank accounts, personal data, etc.
Although an attempt can be made to clean this machine, we cannot be certain afterward that it is truly clean, secure, and trustworthy.
Because of the infection's backdoor functionality(i.e., remote control capability), the basic security of your PC is likely compromised, and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted.
In addition you should take whatever steps you think prudent to safeguard against identity theft.

I would recommend Reformatting and re-installing Windows as the only CERTAIN way to be sure all remnants are gone.

Also, there are enough reports of spam from using worldwinner that I would conclude they are not too careful about their associations.

If you do not wish to Reformat and still want to attempt to clean the machine, please proceed as follows:
This is a lot to do. Just take one step at a time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
We need to remove Spybot temporarily. You can re-install it when we are through if you wish.
We will update Adobe Reader later.

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spybot - Search & Destroy
Adobe Reader 8.1.5

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If Spybot ask whether you want to remove all settings, answer YES.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. UNCHECK the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partitions other than C:\
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

So please let me know if you decide to Reformat.
If you decide NOT to reformat, please post the logs from Gmer, and the two logs from the RSIT scanner.

Re: Problems after removing Win32.Banker.fgv

Unread postby Frehley » February 16th, 2010, 5:35 pm

Thank you so much for your help Askey. As I cannot immediately have my Windows reformatted I will have to take the other route you suggested, going throught the steps necessary to cleanse as much as possible. I have taken all of the steps you recommended.

I also have a question for you... I recently went back to AVG Free Antivirus; when I used the older version there was always something to be removed, guaranteed. Mostly warnings and small things like that. With the new version there hasn't been one file to remove yet even though I have had it on for a couple of weeks. Does this sound normal to you?

Here are the logs you requested; thanks again!

Re: Problems after removing Win32.Banker.fgv

Unread postby askey127 » February 17th, 2010, 7:41 am

Frehley,
A couple questions:
1) Please verify for me that your Internet provider is MTS Allstream.
2) Do you recognize OGALogon.job as something you scheduled yourself? Do you knowingly have anything scheduled to run at every startup?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Reader 8.1

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
----------------------------------------------------
Compose A Script to Locate Files
Please highlight, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the text inside the quote into a new Notepad document.
For %%a in (
"dzrbocow.exe"
"pftoipod.sys"
) do (
dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find %%a >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
)
pause
Save it on your Desktop as file type "All Files" (NOT as "Text Documents") and name it FindMe.bat
Close Notepad.
Double click FindMe.bat on your Desktop.
A window will open and close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A new file icon named look.txt will appear on your desktop. In your next reply, please post the contents of the look.txt file, or tell me of it's blank.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt

Please do your best to answer my couple questions, post the contents of Look.txt from your desktop, and post the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log.

I am very confused on how to answer your first question, so the long way is best to make sure I don't miss anything. My Internet provider is MTS Allstream; and with that said... I have noticed that when I have changed passwords, the confirmation email would say the change was made from either of two different numbers even though I use only one.

On top of this, and to add to the confusion, MTS Allstream has had problems with lines in our area and has made compensations to pick up where there service fails until they can get to the problem next summer. I don't know how they are handling this, and am going to try to find out today what they may have done that I have two ISP numbers. When I find out I will add an update here. Update - All they told me was that because an ISP number is dynamic I may see it as different numbers. Geez, sorry about that, I didn't know how little I knew about this stuff!

As for the second question, I have only got a graphics program and AVG running on startup that I know of; there is nothing else that I can think of.

Here is the result from the FindMe scan:

C:\Documents and Settings\judy\Desktop>For %a in ("dzrbocow.exe" "pftoipod.sys")
do (dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S | Find %a 1>>"C:\Documents and Settings\judy\deskt
op\look.txt" )

C:\Documents and Settings\judy\Desktop>(dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S | Find "dzrbocow
.exe" 1>>"C:\Documents and Settings\judy\desktop\look.txt" )

C:\Documents and Settings\judy\Desktop>(dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S | Find "pftoipod
.sys" 1>>"C:\Documents and Settings\judy\desktop\look.txt" )

C:\Documents and Settings\judy\Desktop>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

Am now running Malware Bytes. Thanks again...

There should be an icon on your desktop labeled "Look" or look.txt". Please double click it and post its contents. If it's empty that's OK.

Frehley,
Looks pretty good.
Are you still having any more symptoms?

We will install the newest Adobe Reader. Then I would like to run at least one more scan, and then some cleanup after having a look at the results.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

-----------------------------------------------
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Disable or Exit your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
In AVG Free it's called "Resident Shield". If you right click the AVG icon, you can usually disable it.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus "Resident Shield".
  • A logfile will be created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please paste the contents of this file in your post.

The only thing that has happened was yesterday. I had one pop-up seemingly out of nowhere, I couldn't tell where it came from; I was on a site I am always on that doesn't have pop-ups.

I checked around to see If I had accidentally clicked on something; I didn't see anything I could have clicked, plus the ad type was one of those cursor ads; what I am saying is that it wasn't likely something I accidentally clicked on, or so it seems.

So... Once again I did as you directed... And I put in the Adobe Reader. The eset online scanner didn't work though. I clicked on agree to terms, and it didn't ask me if I wanted to install ActiveX; it just stalled like that.

Frehley,
See if this one runs OK. Leave it alone and expect it to take quite a while. It's very thorough.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

Re: Problems after removing Win32.Banker.fgv

Hi again Askey

I did as you said, after I downloaded the Kaspersky thingemebobber I proceeded to run the scan. It was going well until my husband came home. He doesn't know a single thing about computers and he just shut it down. When I got back to the computer I tried to restart the scan and it wouldn't run. I emptied my browser and I also emptied my java because I was planning on playing my favorite game later, I do that regularly.

I tried to run the scan again after these things were done. I get an error message that says it can't access it's java application because of my connection. That doesn't seem to explain why it had worked before...

Frehley,
I would like to have an independent scan to verify that the machine is clean before we finish up.
Please try this one.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Run the Panda Active Scan

You should use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Please visit Panda Active Scan to run an online scan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC now button
  • A new window will open...click the Scan Now button
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • Run the ActiveX control, if requested.
  • The screen will then show the scanning progress - the scan could take several hours to finish. Please be patient. Warn your husband not to TOUCH it.
  • When the scan has finished, click on Export To button.
  • Save the file as Activescan.txt to your Desktop
  • Close the Activescan window then go to your Desktop
  • Please post the contents of Activescan.txt in your reply.

Hi Askey, thanks for your continued help with this nuisance;

I am attempting to do as you ask, but wanted to let you know how progress is going. I downloaded the necessary files for the Panda scan. When the scan began it was going okay. It stalled the first time at 38%. Of course this concerned me. I turned off my antivirus when I ran the scan because I wasn't sure if I needed to or not. Because the scan's stalling concerned me so much I ran a scan of AVG Free. At last count there were 21 virus related files showing. This is the first time AVG has shown anything... By the way, I stopped the scan before it deleted the virus, I figured you needed to see them first.

I am still trying to run the Panda scan.

Update

I both apologize and retract my last statement. I said I wouldn't delete them, but I felt I had to. When I had finished the AVG Free scan it yielded 63 virus related files. I then tried to run the Panda scan and it was taking forever. I got so paranoid about 63 viruses loose on my computer that I reran AVG Free and took them off.

I am going to try Panda again, I will let you know what happens.

Still a way to go, but it says infected files are found. This is strange. I say this because Panda stalled, so I tried Kaspersky again, Kaspersky worked, quite quickly too. It showed nothing at all. I figured I would retry the Panda scan and so far it's working. I will add the file when done. By now it looks like it's going to take all night to run.

I am so concerned because I removed those infected files earlier and they are right back again. Only 33 this time though. I am wondering what damage is being done, it scares me that I don't know. I Googled this query and don't find any specific answers. I would appreciate any clarification on what type of harm can possibly be done.

PS - All of the infected files AVG found said Win32/PEPatch; all infected files were in the registry.

So finally, after running the Panda scan it stalled overnight. It isn't working. There is one more thing I felt you might want to know. When I was trying to run Panda, the AVG Free scheduled scan kicked in; it showed infected files. As I have said before, until this time AVG has shown nothing at all on any scan. So when I ran the AVG scan the second time, I ran it with the Panda scan page still open. More malicious files showed up.

Today I ran a scan again (because yesterday they were apparently multiplying according to AVG Free) and the scan once again yields nothing, at least while running with Panda off. I have no idea if this means anything, I just thought you should know.

Frehley,
We will get this figured out. Please be patient.

I have no way of knowing what has been done to your system at this point, so if you want me to pursue this, please follow these instructions:
AVG has been known to have some false detections. At this point in your case, I don't know how to get a complete summary from it.

We are going to switch Antivirus applications.
Download this Antivirus Installer from here and Save it to your desktop.
[*]AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml[/list]
Don't run it yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight this Entry, and choose Remove :

AVG Free 9.0

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install a new Antivirus
Once you are certain the AVG Uninstall is finished, immediately double click on the Avira Antivir installer you just downloaded on your desktop (umbrella icon), and install the new Antivirus.
Have it Update, and then allow it to run a Full scan. Make sure it finishes. (It will)
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display report.
The report will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.
