Crouching Spyware, Hidden Keylogger

Unread postby Kurasu » February 14th, 2010, 9:25 am

After having a World Of Warcraft account hacked, I was naturally rather paranoid about finding the culprit. Unfortunately, I have yet to be lucky enough to be able to locate it for sure. A new Antivirus and scan revealed one virus on my system (which was subsequently removed), but if I recall correctly, the trojan found wasn't an actual keylogger.

After multiple attempts with various programs (including a poke or two with a Registry Cleaner... I know I know), I have yet to be able to locate it and have been experiencing some significant slowdown when opening specific folders. 'cisvc.exe' is claiming over 50% of my CPU. Not only that, but the sound effects for opening my folders disappeared, and had to be manually reset.

Thanks to an authenticator, I should be safe, but I'd still like to get rid of the logger and slowdown if at all possible!

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

This program is not showing in your uninstall list but take note that the above program or remnants of the above program and any other P2P program found will be removed when cleaning.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

GMER Rootkit Scanner
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please reply with:-
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)
  • GMER Log

I attempted to run both programs as you said. The first time I ran RSIT, there were no issues. However, during the GMER scan overnight, my computer slowed to a crawl, froze up, and to do anything I had to do a cold restart. Upon restart, attempting to run RSIT again only brought up the first file (log.txt) with the second nowhere to be found.

It wasn't until I went to save the log as a 'just in case' that I realized it autosaved. :(

Shall I post the log.txt that I just acquired, and the autosaved info.txt from last night? Or just the newest log.txt?

I do have the other two logs as run last night; I just wanted to be sure of that before I posted them.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Re: Crouching Spyware, Hidden Keylogger

Unread postby Kurasu » February 20th, 2010, 9:47 pm

When I first ran ComboFix, the 'download?' popped up just as you said. However, it locked up at that point and I was forced to shut it down. It took another couple tries to get it to work; the first time complaining about a missing file and error, then, when I tried again to write down the error (and report it), it worked. I'm not sure whether this means ComboFix should be suspect, or if it was a hiccup.

After running ComboFix, the log was created and saved, but I was forced to do a cold shutdown in order to regain all the folders and bars on my Windows desktop. The only thing showing was my wallpaper.

Here is the log obtained after this 'adventure', as well as my new HJT:

I notice uTorrent is still in the list. Does this mean HJT didn't remove it, or is that only a remnant? I can delete manually if need be; the only reason I hadn't removed it before is because of the 'do not do' instructions. :)

It should be uninstalled. I didn't specifically ask as it was not on your uninstall list. What list are you referring too? HJT just stopped it from running at startup so far.

After running ComboFix, the log was created and saved, but I was forced to do a cold shutdown in order to regain all the folders and bars on my Windows desktop. The only thing showing was my wallpaper.

Is all ok now and how is the computer running?

I am just looking at the logs now. :)

That's where I meant. :) I just happened to see it in the list as I was pasting it. Didn't check which log it was in. As far as I knew, it should've been uninstalled. I just didn't go looking to see if there was a folder/file to delete on top of it.

Is all ok now and how is the computer running?

Yep. Windows was back to normal after a restart. Getting into 'My Computer' is still being oddly sluggish, but the other folders that had been slow and laggy to open are running smooth. 'cisvc.exe' no longer shows up in my Task Manager at all, let alone consuming memory.

Don't know if you got every bit of it, but you definitely seem to have got what was causing the slowdown!

Great! Let’s just do a couple more things to see if we can get it even better :)

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    PopCap Browser Plugin
    Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only)
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Download and Run OTM.exe

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:Files
c:\documents and settings\Kurasu Soratobu\Application Data\uTorrent
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8

:Commands

[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]

  • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM.exe

Things are looking quite good but I do feel it will be beneficial to run an online scan. Be warned it will take ages.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Please reply with:-
  • OTM log
  • Kaspersky log
  • New HJT log

Still having around five seconds of lag opening 'My Computer'. Still, if that's the only issue remaining, small price to pay. Every computer has its quirks, after all:)

Something else I noticed is while clicking on an MSN link sent by a friend, my computer is now opening it with IE instead of Firefox. Is this something the cleanup did? And if so, is there a way to set it back?

You sure weren't kidding about it taking a while. Here you go.

Still having around five seconds of lag opening 'My Computer'. Still, if that's the only issue remaining, small price to pay. Every computer has its quirks, after all:)

Is that the only issue remaining?

Something else I noticed is while clicking on an MSN link sent by a friend, my computer is now opening it with IE instead of Firefox. Is this something the cleanup did? And if so, is there a way to set it back

Yes you can reset Firefox back as your default browser. Sadly much to my sons’ disgust :? I am not a Firefox user. So maybe this page will help.

Please empty this Folder :-

C:\Documents and Settings\Kurasu Soratobu\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    Java(TM) 6 Update 17

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

Let me know when the above is done and if there are no problems remaining we will go onto the final steps. :flower:

Yes, the slowness in opening 'My Computer' seems to be the only issue remaining. Eve ntook a quick test of WoW and found it bug-free without any issues. Huge improvement. :)
