Multiple PC problems

Unread postby bobgrem » January 31st, 2010, 11:15 am

Hi –

My computer is in bad shape.
1) I get the blue screen of death but am able to start in safe mode. It seems when it is booting I have to esc sptd.sys when it gives the option to do that so the computer boots to safe mode.
2) My Firefox browser is getting hijacked. I didn’t try IE.
3) McAfee is not working properly and unable to fix. I tried to run McAfee Virtual Technician but I get the message “The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.”
4) After awhile I get a message “DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly. The system is shutting down. Save all work in progress.” – I did an Internet search and learned to prevent this by typing “shutdown –a” in the command line that appears after Start, Run.
5) I couldn’t get to Hijackthis program on the infected computer’s browser so downloaded it on another computer and saved it to disk for install.
6) I ran Malwarebytes’ anti-malware a couple of days ago and it found one infection (I didn’t record what it was) and the programs fixed it. I updated it and ran it again today the 31st and no problems were found.

Should I hook up and turn on all external drives that have been used with this system during this process?

Below are the two requested log files. Thank you in advance!

Here is my Hijack.log:

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download DDS

Download DDS from one of the below links and save it to your desktop.

Link1
Link2
Link3
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finishes it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

GMER Rootkit Scanner
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please reply with:-
  • DDS logs
  • GMER Log

Re: Multiple PC problems

Unread postby muppy03 » February 6th, 2010, 9:24 pm

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent DNA

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

This program is not showing in your uninstall list but take note that remnants of the above program/s and any other P2P program found will be removed when cleaning.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

Re: Multiple PC problems

Unread postby muppy03 » February 7th, 2010, 12:35 am

Please update me on problems that your are still experiencing after doing the following.

Important Please disable mcafee before running the following.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    Folder::
    c:\program files\DNA
    c:\documents and settings\Bob\Application Data\DNA
    c:\documents and settings\Bob\Application Data\BitTorrent
    c:\program files\BitTorrent

    Regnull::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CakewalkPlugIns\^`ܵî =qx * *]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log
  • Update on problems

Hi -

Below is the hijack log -- the combofix log even by itself exceeds the character limit by more than four times. (Your message contains 456855 characters. The maximum number of allowed characters is 100000.)

My computer seems to be working okay now -- no blue screen, was able to update and activate McAfee, and browser hijacking seems to have ended. Also, Microsoft's updater asked me to download a malicious software removal tool update and one other update, which I did, so that seems to be working okay, too.

Thanks so much for your efficiency, expertise and quick responses!
I am through with PtoP downloads, also! I guess you'll let me know whether to take any other steps and/or how to get the combofix log to you.

Thanks,
Bob

Below is the hijack log -- the combofix log even by itself exceeds the character limit by more than four times. (Your message contains 456855 characters. The maximum number of allowed characters is 100000.)

wow! :? see if you can attach it please.

Hi -

Here is the combofix log in an attachment (I think, because although it said it was uploading I don't see an attachment).

Thanks,

I tried part 2 but it said "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."
I don't know if Part 1 posted since I don't see anything about an attachment.
Thanks!

Sorry bob, no part one showing. I do really need to see the log though. The size of the loog seems excessive, is the bulk of it P2P deletions?

How are you trying to attach the file? When you tried part one where you given any error messages etc?
