Hello, I had a fake antivirus pop up that turned off my antivirus (symantec). It seems my computer is infected with trojan.fakeAV. Thank you for your time helping me out.

Let's proceed.

First,
MGADiag.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on MGADiag.exe > Run as Administrator to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file MGADiag.txt and post it in your next reply.

Next,
RSIT by random/random.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe > Run as Administrator to run the tool.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open.
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next post.
***You can find manually the log at C:\rsit

Next,
GMER.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
    There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Right click on Gmer.exe > Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan,click NO.
  • Click on >>> symbol and choose on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
    Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Let's proceed.

First,
Remove programs.
Please Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features
Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Uninstall/Change.
Ad-Aware

If some program(s) listed above are not in present, please do not panic and proceed to the next step.

Next,
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Run
  • Right click on Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon > Run as Administrator to run the program.
  • Click on Update tab > Check for Updates.
  • Once done, click on Scanner tab, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Refer to above image and then click Remove Selected to proceed.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

hello,

I have uninstalled Ad-Aware
I ran MBAM but it would not let me update it. I got the error " not connected to the internet or change firewall setting to allow MBAM"
However, I am connected to the internet and if its a problem with my firewall I don't know how to change the settings.

Hi,
Let's proceed with this instructions.

First,
Fix entries.
  • Run the HiJack This by right click on the tool > Run as an Administrator.
  • Click on Do a system scan only button.
  • Search the entries as below and tick at the small box.
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
  • Close any other program and leave HiJackThis program alone.
  • Click Fix checked.

Next,
ERUNT by Lars Hederer
Download ERUNT and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on erunt-setup.exe > Run as Administrator to install the program.
  • Follow the prompts > uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • Next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT.
  • If ERUNT doesnt start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process

Note:
The backups can be restored from here:
C:\windows\ERDNT\<todays date>\ERDNT.exe

Next,
Registry Fix.
  • Open Notepad.exe.
  • Copy and paste below code into the notepad.
    Code: Select all

Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Uninstall/Change.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware


Next,
Please proceed to download new copy of MBAM and perform the full scan once again. :)
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on mbam-setup.exe > Run as Administrator and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Refer to above image and then click Remove Selected to proceed.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
Note:
  • The log can also be found here:

First,
Vista Service Pack 1
Please allow the system to update to the SP1. This will increase both overall system security and stability:
  • Click on Image > All Programs > Windows Update.
  • In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
  • After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
  • Click to select the check box for Windows Vista SP1 only, then click Install.
  • When completed Reboot(restart) your computer if not prompted to do so.


Next,
Reboot into usual account.

Remove programs.
Please Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features
Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Uninstall/Change.
Adobe Reader 8.1.0
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

If some program(s) listed above are not in present, please do not panic and proceed to the next step.

Next,
Update Adobe Reader.
Any versions numbered lower than 9.3 should be replaced.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version.

Next,
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE).
Please download from HERE.
  • Find JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click on Download JRE.
  • Choose the correct Platform and Multi-language. Next, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click the Continue button.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all active windows.
  • Install the program.

Next,
RSIT.
  • Copy the code as below by right click > copy:
    Code: Select all

  • Click on Image > Run....
  • Paste the code into the box and click OK.
  • Click on Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open.

Hello.
I have uninstalled then reinstalled/updated Java and Adobe.
I however was not able to update with Vista service pack 1

i tried three times for it to update and each time i got a failure message. So i looked at my update history and it seems since July 2007 my computer has been trying to update Vista almost everyday and each update has failed. I have no idea what is causing this since other updates have gone through like windows defender. What can I do to get this update to be successful?

Hi,

First,
CCleaner - Clear temp.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the Windows tab, under Internet Explorer, uncheck Cookies if you do not want them deleted.
    (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the Options icon at the left side of the window, then click on Advanced. Untick Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Click on the Cleaner icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the Issues feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Next,
Reboot into the usual account.

Next,
Temporary disable.
  • Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall.
    Installed program :
    Symantec AntiVirus
  • Please visit HERE if you don't know how.
  • Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given.

Next,
Try again to perform Windows Update.

Next,
***If the above instruction fails to perform their works, please follow the next instruction.

Above quote is the example of error that will come out once you fail to update.
Please let me know the code (something similar as bold part in the above quote) that appear.

Let's proceed. There is a few more.

First,

Kaspersky Online AV Scan
Note: Internet Explorer should be used. Right click on the icon > Run as Administrator.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next.
