Hello,

A few days ago, I had a bad case of the "Malware Defender" rootkit, H8SRT. I could not send you the Hijackthis log because the malware would not let Hijackthis.exe execute. I used TDSSKiller.exe and MalwareBytes to remove the problem. But I am not sure it is gone. I still have some "slow" problems whic may/maynot be related.

Would be so kind to check for removal. Here is the HijackThis log and uninstall list.

Thanks,
Harry

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. The logs that you will be posting can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have version 1.5 or higher, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

===========================
Step 1

Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Step 2

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
  5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.

Double click on gmer.exe to run it. It will start running a scan. If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt to run a full scan. Click Yes.

  • When done, you may receive another notice. Click OK.
  • Click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

If you receive no notice, click on the Scan button.

  • It will start scanning again.
  • When done, click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
  3. Gmer.txt

Carolyn

Thank you for your help. I followed your instructions I have the files you requested, but am unable to upload attachments because the board's quota has been reached.

Everything ran smoothly except gmer. Gmer gave me no diagnostics or errors. I was able to run and copy/paste the initial log. However when I ran the scan, it crashed after 20 min or so. The monitor went black, then rebooted into a diagnostic mode (where I was given the opportunity to run vista repair). Instead I let it boot normally.

I noticed avira-free was running in the background with guard=active. I am not sure how to prevent it from running at start-up. I will be able to turn off the guard next time.

Hi Harry,

No need to use attachments. Instead, please open each log in notepad then copy/paste the contents of the log in your next reply. If the logs are long, more than one reply may be required to post the entire contents.

Thank you

Due to a lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
