Please help with Antivirus Live infection

Unread postby wesmat » January 19th, 2010, 10:53 am

A friend's computer has an infection. It looks identical to a different system infection back in December. There is a shield icon in the taskbar titled "Antivirus Live" and ANY attempt to run an app opens a window that says the file is infected and then asks if the antivirus software should be activated. The only way I can run anything is to boot into safe mode. Please help clean this up!

Here is the HJT log:

Re: Please help with Antivirus Live infection

Unread postby deltalima » January 27th, 2010, 7:40 am

Hi wesmat,

multiple Anti Virus programs

  • It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
    AVG9
    NOD32
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

  • Please remove NOD32 and keep AVG9

Also please remove Ad-Aware, it may interfere with the fix that we will do and can be replaced with a superior equivalent later.

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
    highlight Ad-Aware 2007
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

We need to stay in safe mode to download some tools and then boot into normal mode to run them. Please save the logs and then reboot back into safe mode with networking to post the logs back here.

Download Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

Please download DDS ... by sUBs.
Save it to your desktop. Alternate download link:here.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.

Now please reboot into normal mode

Run RKill
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Run DDS
  • Double click DDS to run it.
  • A black Screen will open... read the contents but do nothing.
  • When DDS finishes... Notepad will open with 2 reports... DDS.txt and Attach.txt
Ignore the comments about zipping / attaching any of the report files. The 2 report files are not saved anywhere,
if you close Notepad, before copying /pasting them... you will need to run DDS again.
  • Copy/paste both DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply.
  • Once the reports have been posted, you can delete DDS from your desktop.

Run GMER
  • Double click the GMER[b] file that you downloaded. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click [b]NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please reboot into safe mode with networking.

Post the GMER log along with DDS.txt and Attach.txt from the DDS scan into your next reply.

Hi wesmat,

If possible please print out these instructions for reference during the fix.

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode with Networking

Please start Internet Explorer, and when the program is open, click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options as shown in the image below.

You will now be at the Connections tab as shown by the image below.

Image

Now click on the Lan Settings button as designated by the blue arrow above.

You will now be at the Local Area Network (LAN) settings screen as shown by the image below.

Image

Under the Proxy Server section, please uncheck the checkbox labelled Use a proxy server for your LAN. Then press the OK button to close this screen. Then press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen.

Now please run RKill

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please post the Malwarebytes log along with a new HijackThis log and let me know how the computer is running now and if there were any problems encountered.

Hi wesmat,

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9.3
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Please open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

We need to install Java to allow us to run an online scan. If you agree then follow these instructions. If you do not agree then please post back and let me know and I will give another set of instructions.

We can remove Java later if you no longer require it.

Install Java Runtime

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds.

Now please reboot your computer (unless TFC already caused a reboot).

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with the log from a new HijackThis scan

Hi wesmat,

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

remove all used tools

OTM - Clean up
  1. Double click on OTM.exe to run it.
  2. Click on CleanUp!
  3. When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so at this time.
If your computer does not automatically restart, please restart it manually.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>System Tools >> System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
  • Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
  • Press OK and Yes to confirm

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
