One last thing - re: the last known good configuration. At the time I told you that I had to boot using the LKGC, I was given the option to start in safe mode, start normally, or start using the LKGC. I could not start normally (I tried) and did not want to start in safe mode, so I used the final option. It has been booting up normally since then. Performance has been pretty good; still getting a few redirects from Google search results.

Hi cypher,

I'm having a problem with OTM. I downloaded the app to my desktop, double-clicked on it, but it would not run. An error message popped up saying that it couldn't find framedyn.dll, so I moved the exe file into the directory with framedyn.dll and created a shortcut to the desktop, but it still wouldn't run. Any suggestions?

Hi drumdiva.
Ok this is most likely due to the infection you have, please continue with the instructions below.
I would ask that you do not attempt any further self fixes as this will complicate matters.

First please Delete OTM from your desktop.

Next.

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    framedyn.dll

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Re: Malware still present?

I'm still getting this error message when I try to run OTM (I couldn't get a screen shot):

This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

If I click on OK, it takes me to the application itself. Should I just ignore the error message and paste the code into the "Items to be Moved" area?

Re: OTM - I saved it as otm.scr as suggested, but it still ran as otm.scr.exe. In other words, only the name of the file was changed, not the type. Same framedyn.dll error message came up. Any thoughts?

Hi drumdiva.
Thank you for your efforts so far lets try this.

Disable Avast

  • Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Next.

Download and Run ComboFix

  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**
  • Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi drumdiva.
Now we are getting somewhere :)
Please continue with the instructions below.

Disable Avast

  • Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Next.
