I seem to have a torjan attack problm. My security system identifies two trojans Trojan.Win32.Vapsup.chf and Trojan-Dropper. Win32.Agent. I was originally attacked by some adware wanting to protect me from viruses etc but I think I got rid of that. The only symptom now seems to be a great deal of extra communication with my computer and another-others when I first boot up. Tjis great than normal . Thank yiou for your patience and help. I think all the info is now here.

Hi and welcome to the MR forums. :)

I'm melboy and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take note of the following:

  1. I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start. Backing up: What, how, where

No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!! If you need more time, please inform me.

DDS

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Link1
Link2
Link3

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. A command window will appear, this is normal.

Image
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please copy & paste the contents of :
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
And post them in your next reply.

Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
  3. GMER log

I'm having trouble. I browse and then click Add the file or browse, open and then click add the file but I don't see any product on the screen.
Solution?

OK, it worked. You should have 3 files.

Hi daviwish

Please copy and paste the contents of the files into your next post rather than attaching them - The same as you did for your initial Hijack This log.

Thanks.

1. I was earlier supposed to remove DDS when it finished. I can't find it. I chose run when it came up and don't know that it was saved.
2. To run ATF cleaner I had to turn off ie explorer - and your instructions. Good to warn of this.
3. I did not clean out my recycle bin since I believe I have some pics which accidentally got put there and I have to go thru and check.
4. You told me to remove some Java files and said If something isn't found........ - what should have been found. I just removed the programs. A file called Java 6 update 18 remains as it was not on your list. Is that OK?
I did not find infected items above. If I have no infected items what is happening when the trojan files mentioned above are quarantined or marked to be renamed etc. Why do I continue to attract these darn things?
Thank you

Hi David

I was earlier supposed to remove DDS when it finished. I can't find it.

Yes, you ran DDS from a temporary location. If you read my instructions it does say to "save it to your desktop" ATF cleaner will have deleted the temporary internet file it ran from.

a file called Java 6 update 18 remains as it was not on your list. Is that OK?

Yes that's Ok.

Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18 which is the one you currently have installed.

what is happening when the trojan files mentioned above are quarantined or marked to be renamed etc

Your security is doing it's job and protecting you. Whilst the files are in your security's quarantine they can cause no harm.

Why do I continue to attract these darn things?

I'll give you some tips on how to stay safe when we are done.

How are things running? Any problems?

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.
  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

In your next reply:
  1. ESET online scan log
  2. a fresh HijackThis log (Do a system scan and save a log file) and a description of how the computer is running now.

I followed the directions and "unloaded F Secure". I downloaded ESET and ran the scan. The first time I got to 27% and it failed, stopped and showed the "back" sign. I went back and it said that an antivirus program was working and might interfere. I re loaded F Secure, disabled the anti virus and the firewall, unloaded the whole thing again. Then I erased the version of eset I had loaded and downloaded it again. I still get to about 58% and it fails.
Any suggestions. Security is turned back on now until I figure out what to do.
Thanks for your patient assistance.

Again. The scan loading line goes to 58% then stalls and the red "unexpected error 2002" turns up. I go back and f secure which is unloaded is the identified problem.

When I load e-set, the activeX request appears, I click it and the box goes blank. The info " X( I forget which program) needs to re-send. I accept that and the loading continues.

Do I have to completely unloade F-secure?
