Blue Screen - Laptop shuts down

Unread postby mom2990104 » January 18th, 2010, 7:38 pm

Hi,

My husband's computer has a problem. Several times over the past three days, he has gotten a blue screen (not sure if it is THE blue screen of death) and it has then shut down. Twice he's been able to boot right back up in normal mode; today it did some strange black screen and said something about an "ethernet cable" (???) and would not boot for several tries.

Hijackthis and uninstall_list logs follow. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

SUPERAntiSpyware Advice:

CAUTION: SuperAntiSpyware comes with a programme called Bootsafe, do not for any reason use this programme, if used on an infected computer it could render it UNBOOTABLE.

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Right-click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to start RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your husband's computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Both RSIT Logs. <-- Post them individually please. IE: one Log per post/reply.

Re: Blue Screen - Laptop shuts down

Unread postby mom2990104 » January 24th, 2010, 7:13 pm

Hi, and thanks for the help.

His computer has continued to experiece blue-screen shutdowns in the past week. If it encounters errors upon reboot, it says something along the lines of "media test failure - check cable". (This flashes by kind of quickly as it tries to reboot, so I'm not sure if that's the exact error.)

He is still able to eventually reboot and can use the computer (as I am right now) until it unexpected blue screens again.

The request RSIT logs will follow in the next two replies.

Thanks!

Hi. :)

Hi, and thanks for the help.
You're welcome and thanks for the update.

The Hard-Drive may be failing on your husbands computer and or there may be a incorrect setting in the BIOS(Basic Input/Output System). Though I will not rule out malware as the culprit just yet.

Has your husband changed any settings with the BIOS recently at all?

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Next:

Has your husband purchased this application or is it the free trial version? Also has it been used to change/Optimize absolutely anything on the computer at all?

PC Pitstop Optimize2 2.0

Security Application Check:

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe to your Desktop from one of the links below.

Link 1
Link 2

  • Right-click SecurityCheck.exe and select Run as Administrator then follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

F-Secure Blacklight:

Please download Blacklight from here

or

Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Save it to C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe

  • Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    • Open the Start Menu.
    • In the white line (Start Search) area, type cmd
    • Press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
    • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt
    • Type the following line onto the command prompt
      C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Hit Enter
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Click Exit
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log.
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look similar to this: Image

Now right-click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat and select Run as Administrator to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is the computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Answers to my questions.
  • SecurityCheck Log.
  • Blacklight Log.
  • checkhd.txt

I also have concerns about the hard drive stability. I don't believe there have been any changes to BIOS. PC Pitstop Optimize 2.0 was downloaded as a trial version, but there were no updates or optimization performed.

I attempted to copy/paste the fsbl log in the body of a reply, but got the message:
Your message contains 3926856 characters. The maximum number of allowed characters is 100000.

So, I looked at the file size. The file is 7769 kb! Any suggestions?

Sorry, some more info...

Laptop wouldn't "wake up", was frozen, which required holding the power button until it shut down...

... then I got an error upon attempted startup which read:

"Logon Process has failed to create the security options dialog."

This required a hard shut down, five minutes or so of off time, then the laptop started up without further error.

Thanks again!

Not a problem we will merely try a alternative scan.

This required a hard shut down, five minutes or so of off time, then the laptop started up without further error.

OK I will take this into account and you're welcome!

Next:

Is the installed Anti-Virus Norton 360 supposed to be active and or has the subscription ran out?

Scan with GMER:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.

  • Right-click on the .exe file and select Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is your computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • Answer to my Norton 360 query.
  • GMER Log.

Norton produces SO MANY errors and updates, I don't know what to do with it. The trial period has expired, so I understand that I would not have the latest updates, but still it seems to have an internal error that isn't allowing it to run properly. It has given me a message that states it needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Do you want me to perform either of those steps?

I'll reply with the GMER log as soon as I can get the laptop running; it doesn't want to boot again. The errors on startup are:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

It is showing these errors repeatedly, seems to be stuck in a pattern.

Thanks,
Cara

Hi. :)

Norton produces SO MANY errors and updates, I don't know what to do with it. The trial period has expired, so I understand that I would not have the latest updates, but still it seems to have an internal error that isn't allowing it to run properly.
I can provide advice about this in due course.

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
This is sounding to myself like either a BIOS related boot error and or a specific Hardware issue. I'm afraid myself and this forum only provide Anti-Malware support.

If you wish to seek assistance with a view to the aforementioned the best advice I can give is to is create a account at one of the following forums and post in the appropriate section.

By all means include a link back to this topic:

I am a member of both of the below myself and they have outstanding IT Tech Support Staff:

Specific Hardware Support:

Any questions do not hesitate to ask

Next:

I advise you either copy or print of the below for future reference:-

With regard to Norton360, once the Hardware related issues have been resolved:-

Download just one only of the three free anti-virus programs installers listed below:

Norton/Symantec RT:

Please download the Norton Removal Tool and Save it to your Desktop.

  • Close all programs and right-click the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Restart the computer if asked.
  • Then delete Norton_Removal_Tool.exe from your desktop.

Note: if you were not prompted, reboot the computer.

Then:-

Whichever Anti-Virus you chose to download:-

Install >> Update >> Carry Out a Complete Scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Next:

I apologise I cannot assist your good self any further at this time. I sincerely hope the hardware related issues are resolved.

Good luck and stay safe!
