Hi Mona,

Welcome to the Malware Removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems.
Please give me some time to review your log as this can be a lengthy process. As soon as a MR Staff Expert reviews my fix, I will post it for you.
In the mean time, if any problems occur. Please let me know.
Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
If you’re unsure of anything at all please stop and ask!

Thanks

I shall await your instructions. One thing I did manage to see in scanning the log is a reference to AOL. AOL is my old provider, currently using YahooSBC Dialup.

Hi Mona,

I found no signs of CoolWebSearch left over. You do have some other issues we will take care of.
Until I give you the all clean please limit your internet access so we lessen the chances of re-infection.

Please download the Symantec sasser removal tool from here. Save the file FxSasser.exe to your desktop.
Double click FxSasser.exe
Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.
Restart the computer.
Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

==========

Please print the instructions below or copy and paste to Notepad since you will not have internet access while in safe mode later in the fix.

You may already have some of these but please make sure that they are updated and configured as below:

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates
Do not run it yet
==========

Spybot S&D is available from here.

Download and Install Spybot S&D (if you haven't already), accept the Default Settings
In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see Mode.
Make certain that 'Default Mode has a check mark beside it.
Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the updates.
Make sure you Immunize to accept the updates.
Next click the button ‘Check for Problems'
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'BLACK' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window
Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
REBOOT normally to complete the scan and clear memory.
==========

Now, enable the Show Hidden Folders option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
==========

LETS REMOVE SOME PROGRAMS

Please go to:
Start
Control panel
Add/Remove programs

Find and remove these programs (if they are present)

REBATE NATION
HelpExpress
Alset
(If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic)
=========

Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avserve2.exe] C:\WINDOWS\avserve2.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O8 - Extra context menu item: Rebate Nation - file://C:\Program Files\Rebate_Nation\Sy5300\Tp5300\scri5300a.htm

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
==========

Going to SAFE MODE

Now reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key.
Select Safe Mode from the menu
If you are still unsure, see here
==========

DELETE FILES FOLDERS

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking. Explore navigate to and find the following files: if found, delete the following files (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\WINDOWS\avserve2.exe

Again using Windows Explore navigate to and find following folders: if found, delete the following folders (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\REBATE_NATION
C:\Program Files\Alset

Now we need to do a search. Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste each into the Search for files and folders named box:

wumgrd.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE

If any of these files are found please delete them.
==========

Clean out your Temp files as follows:
Open Internet Explorer. You'll get a 404 page not found, but that is normal in safe mode.
At the top, click Tools>Internet Options> and then, in the center click Delete Cookies
Click Delete Files and then in the new applet check the box for all offline content
Click OK
Close that applet and open the C>Windows>Temp folder, and delete all files in there too, and all files in sub-folders of Temp.
Empty the C:\Windows\Prefetch Folder about once a month. More if you use the internet a lot.
Empty ALL C:\Documents and Settings\user name here\LocalSettings\Temp Folders

Now empty your Recycle Bin
============

Run ewido Malware Remover

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections ". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!
==========

Reboot your PC in Normal Mode

==========

Run an online virus scan called Kapersky from here.

1. Click on "Kapersky Online Scanner"
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
3. Now Kapersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as ".txt" to the desktop. And restart.
==========

Post a new HJT log for review
Post ewido report
Post .txt log from kapersky
You may need to use multiple posts if logs are large
Let me know of any problems or how you system is operating

Rogue,
I am running HJT. It does not have a "Do a system scan only" option that I can find.

Hi Mona,

When you start HJT you should have a screen New User Quickstart. The second button down should say Do a system scan only.

I didn't get a new users quickstart screen. Is that because this is not the first time it has been run?

Should I just run "Scan"?

My son helped me with going through the fixes you provided. He also tested the Cosmi firewall at http://www.grc.com. It failed, he said it did not provide any outgoing protection. He removed it and replaced it with ZoneAlarm. We tested it again, much better.

Should I send another HJT log?
